At UMA, we often talk about the small wins in Ayurveda. The simple steps that take very little effort yet offer profound results in how we feel. (This is, after all, the beauty of the ancient science: It can be so simple and accessible.) Tongue scraping is one of those small wins. Another is Triphala.

Triphala is an ancient polyherbal blend of three organic fruits native to India— bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki. It has been revered for its nourishing, cleansing, and balancing properties for thousands of years. Ayurvedic has looked to Triphala as a multi-purpose herbal remedy for various ailments, including digestive issues. Research shows that it may help to support internal cleansing, healthy regular bowel movements, and tissue nourishment. (Some experts suggest it offers adaptogenic benefits.) Triphala is also looked to as a general Ayurvedic rasayana to support bodily functions and promote overall vitality, longevity, and good health.

The three fruits are chosen for their incredible wellness boosting properties. Bibhitaki is known to help with detoxification of the muscles, fatty tissue, and blood. (Bibhitaki is very good for promoting balance in Kaphas.) Amalaki, also known as Indian gooseberry, is rich in Vitamin C and helps to boost the immune system and lower cholesterol. Haritaki— also rich in vitamin C—is abundant in antioxidants and helps to ease inflammation, promote healing, and enhance brain function. It also promotes healthy detoxification.

The polyherbal blend is an Ayurvedic recipe, a brown, dense powder. The three fruits, are equally dried, ground, and mixed together. We love to take ours in either capsule form or in a Triphala tea (a small spoonful of the ground herbs in a cup of warm or hot water). It has a pleasant earthy taste and offers a beautiful morning ritual.  It’s one of the most simple daily habits from which we find the greatest benefits.
