UNLOCK THE NATURAL POTENTIAL: 7 DIY HAIR MASKS FOR STRONG AND SHINY HAIR

With salon deep-conditioning treatments out of bounds for the foreseeable future, but with an unwavering commitment to ensuring your mane maintains its shining glory – we bring you our very favorite hair mask ingredients, revered in Ayurveda for building strength and resilience from the root up. Always thinking of your comfort (and quarantine safety), we’ve chosen natural ingredients you can find in your kitchen – plus there’s the added incentive to hair mask at home regularly to cut down on food waste as these items reach their expiration dates!

1

COCONUT MILK

Coconut milk is commonly used in Asia – both in the kitchen and for beauty. This milky liquid is loaded with vitamins such as Vitamin E which helps repair hair damage and split ends. It is also rich in healthy fats which help to nourish, moisturize, and detangle hair. You may want to include this if you are battling with hair loss because the vitamins from coconut milk stimulates blood circulation which promotes thick hair growth.

2

AVOCADO

This popular green fruit (yes, it’s a fruit!) is rich in fats and oils, making it not only a delicious addition to your meal but also an excellent source of moisture for your hair. Because it helps restore dry, damaged, and brittle hair, it is especially suitable for chemically treated hair. The nutrients from this berry (yes, it’s a berry!) can penetrate deep into hair cuticles to moisturize and repair hair and is one of the best recipes for hair growth.

3

EGGS

We all know that eggs are a great source of protein. But did you know that the keratin that makes up your hair is a type of protein? This makes eggs an excellent DIY hair mask for shiny hair! Many people prefer using just egg yolks, but whole eggs will work well too. Make sure to use cool water when rinsing to avoid a hairful of scrambled eggs!

4

YOGURT

Do you constantly have trouble finishing dairy before it turns bad? Not to worry, share some with your hair which will thank you tremendously for it! Yogurt is rich in protein and fats, making it an ideal ingredient to restore the nutrients and level of moisture in hair. It is a great option for thinner and finer hair, because it will not weigh it down like how oils can, so you won’t have to worry about flat and dimension-less hair.

5

OLIVE OIL

This kitchen staple is not only delicious in pasta, but also amazing for hair. Because it is an oil, it acts as an occlusive to help lock in moisture. Besides that, olive oil is also amazing for combating breakage, reducing the appearance of split ends, and taming fly aways.

6

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Apple cider vinegar has a low pH due to its acidic nature which makes it an excellent conditioner. Because shampoo is alkaline, rinse-off conditioners are formulated to be acidic to neutralize the effect of shampoo. Apple cider vinegar acts in the same way, and helps balance the scalp’s pH levels. Besides that, its antibacterial and antifungal properties help to treat flaky and itchy scalps. So if you have a dry or sensitive scalp, apple cider vinegar is the way to go!

7

HONEY

Honey is an amazing ingredient for maintaining the moisture and shine of hair, and fighting hair loss. Raw honey contains enzymes and nutrients that help add shine to the hair without weighing it down. As an emollient, it also seals in moisture, helping keep the hair healthy. Because honey helps clean the hair follicles and prevent clogging, it helps combat hair loss which often results from clogged hair follicles. As an added bonus, it even helps to stimulate dormant follicles, aiding in hair growth!

Some of our favorite combinations:

  1. Avocado + egg for deep conditioning
  2. Coconut milk + olive oil to repair damaged hair
  3. Yogurt + honey for thin, frizzy hair
  4. Apple cider vinegar + honey + olive oil for increased shine

Most of these masks can be applied to wet or dry hair, though we’ve found oil-based masks are easier to apply on dry hair. Be sure to protect your clothing by throwing a towel over them when applying the mask (which you can do with a brush, or just your fingers), and you likely want to section your hair if it’s long for easier application. We recommend applying to the scalp along with the full length of your hair. We’ve tried these both on clean, and unwashed hair, and found them highly efficacious – although masks with oil, yogurt and even egg, if the smell is bothersome, may warrant a gentle shampoo after!

5 AYURVEDIC HERBS THAT POWERFULLY COMBAT HAIR LOSS

Whether we’re experiencing lots of stress or going through the natural processes of aging, hair loss is something that can happen at any point in our lives. And when it does, we might scratch our heads (both literally and figuratively) wondering how to remedy it.

The first step is to identify why hair loss might be happening. It occurs for a wide number of reasons. Sometimes it’s the result of a genetic predisposition, or conditions like alopecia and anemia. Other times, it can occur post-pregnancy due to a drop in estrogen levels and an increase in cortisol levels, or during the hormonal fluctuations of menopause. As research has shown, diets lacking in essential vitamins, proteins and minerals also impact hair strength and regrowth. In addition, sometimes hair loss—whether minute or significant—can occur simply as a result of stress. As dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler tells Goop, “Hair follicles are sensitive to both physical and emotional stressors.”

It’s important to identify the root cause of hair loss and respond accordingly, whether that’s by improving your dietlearning how to ease the transition into menopause or alleviating stress. In addition, there are a number of Ayurvedic herbs that can help speed up the process of regrowth, promoting the circulation of nutrients, stimulating hair follicles and strengthening the hair. Here are 5 of these herbs—when incorporated into your hair care routine, they can help bring thickness, radiance and health to thinning hair.

ALOE VERA

While many know aloe vera as an effective wound healer, its multitude of anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant properties make it a rejuvenating salve for the hair. Cooling and detoxifying, aloe vera can combat scalp inflammation and effectively treat and prevent dandruff. It also rejuvenates dry scalps thanks to its deeply hydrating effects; as dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D, tells mindbodygreen, “The leaf of the aloe vera plant is rich in water, particularly in the innermost layer, so it helps to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture.”

To cleanse, cool down and hydrate your scalp with aloe vera, simply apply fresh aloe vera gel all over the scalp. Rinse off after 15 minutes.

Aloe for acne

HIBISCUS

Like aloe vera, hibiscus is cooling and cleansing, which enables it to combat inflammation. Rich in Vitamin C, it has long been used as a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss. Rubbing hibiscus into the scalp stimulates hair follicles and boosts the circulation of blood and nutrients into the hair, all of which helps promote the growth of strong, healthy hair.

To promote natural hair growth with this Ayurvedic solution, grind hibiscus flowers and leaves into a thick paste. Apply generously to the scalp and wash off with water. You can apply this paste several times a week to stimulate growth.

TRIPHALA

An ancient polyherbal blend made up of bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki, the benefits of triphala seem endless. Not only is it used in Ayurveda to strengthen the liver, digestion and immunity—its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties enable it to provide potent nourishment to the scalp, cleansing it of impurities and strengthening hair at its roots.

To use triphala as a hair supplement, you can mix water and triphala powder to form a thin paste. Massage into the scalp before rinsing off with water.

FENUGREEK

Rich in essential vitamins, iron and calcium, and full of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek is another powerful tool for promoting scalp health and combating hair loss. Its protein and amino acids allow it to treat hair damage and promote thicker hair growth, while its lecithin provides natural hydration and nourishment to the hair follicles. By combating inflammation and damage while also stimulating healthy circulation, fenugreek helps the hair grow back thicker and more radiant.

INDIAN GOOSEBERRY

As Samar Kullab tells Byrdie, Indian gooseberry is “probably one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods. It has 50 times more antioxidants than blueberries.” This extreme richness of antioxidants, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, is part of what makes Indian gooseberry (or amla) one of the most revered Ayurvedic herbs for the hair. Research has backed up this Ayurvedic wisdom, showing that Indian gooseberry can inhibit the growth of the 5α-reductase enzyme that leads to hair loss. Its antioxidants also help protect the hair from damage, breakage and loss that can occur from pollution, dust and certain styling methods. Furthermore, it is deeply hydrating, ultimately leaving the hair strengthened, thicker and more radiant.

amla

To reap the multitude of Indian gooseberry’s benefits, you can either apply it as a paste or look for it as an ingredient in specialty hair oils. Our own UMA Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil utilizes both Indian gooseberry and hibiscus to promote deep nutrition, hydration and regrowth.

AYURVEDIC SECRETS FOR STRONGER AND HEALTHIER BONDS

The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda offers many potent health, wellness, and beauty solutions that have persisted throughout the ages. Many know about the benefits of yoga on our physical and mental health, for example, or about the transformative potential of Ayurvedic self-massage. But Ayurvedic wisdom extends even further than these benefits, and to places even more profound than the realms of health and wellness. As a philosophy that promotes balance and holistic unity, Ayurveda also offers a powerful mindset and framework for experiencing romantic love. In Ayurveda, not only is it important to attain balance within oneself between mind, body, and soul—it’s also crucial to achieving harmony with our environment and with those around us.

There are few areas where the ideas of balance and unity take on a more important role than in the realm of romantic relationships. In Ayurvedic tradition, the concept of doshas offers one lens through which we can learn how to achieve greater balance in our romantic relationships. According to Ayurveda, while most of us contain a combination of all three doshas within us, one dosha typically acts as a dominant force making up our constitution. It’s crucial that we maintain balance within and among our doshas, because if we don’t, both physical and emotional ailments can arise.

Just as we need to find the right balance for our dosha within our own bodies, it’s also important to find balance between the doshas of people who are in a relationship with each other. Each dosha gravitates toward a different way of experiencing love and relationships. Understanding one’s dosha can therefore help partners understand each others’ relationship styles and encourage partners to work together to find doshic balance rather than let arguments or disagreements push them farther apart. Here’s a brief breakdown of each dosha’s relationship style, along with advice on how to achieve relationship balance through the lens of the Ayurvedic doshas.

HOW EACH DOSHA LOVES

VATA

Vatas are dominated by ether and air. As a result, they are like the wind—fast-moving, creative, and full of ideas. They are social and spontaneous. They bring adventure and energy to their relationships. However, due to their more ethereal and light constitution, imbalances can cause them to have a weak digestive system, sleep lightly, and run cold. Emotionally, vatas can easily feel ungrounded, leading them to become at times insecure and anxious within their relationships. However, this anxiety can be alleviated by words of reassurance and affirmation from their partner. So if your vata partner seems stressed or insecure, don’t leave them to battle it out on their own—tell them how much you appreciate and value them.

PITTA

Pittas, ruled by the fire element, are very driven, motivated, and passionate. They are meticulous, organized, and great at envisioning and executing their goals. In short, pittas get things done. However, this strong fiery energy can lead them to experience “digestive fires” like acid reflux and inflammation when imbalanced. They may become irritable and impatient, and, as they speak their minds with frankness and ease, they may end up saying things their partner doesn’t want to hear. Having patience with a pitta when they enter these modes is key—when they’re feeling better, they respond with deep passion, commitment, and a love fueled by fire.

KAPHA

Dominated by earth and water, kaphas are grounded, stable, and loving presences. They are consistent and calm, committed and sweet. However, when imbalanced, they tend to become lethargic, sad, and unwilling to make changes. They might gain weight or experience more severe allergic reactions. When a kapha is in a rut, their partner should help them get off the couch and insert some exciting changes into their routine. Go to a movie or a concert together, or go on a short trip somewhere new—you’ll be sure to experience an exciting reinvigoration of your relationship, too.

HOW TO ACHIEVE RELATIONSHIP BALANCE—REGARDLESS OF YOUR DOSHIC COMBINATION

While there are some doshic combinations that, on the surface, are more compatible than others, one of the most important things in any relationship is to pay close attention to your partner’s needs, wants, and feelings. It’s also extremely important to recognize your own tendencies and flaws, and to prevent them from causing unnecessary trouble or conflict in your relationship. Regardless of dosha, if you have an awareness of the compositional tendencies of both yourself and your partner, you can work together toward achieving a healthy, nurturing balance.

In Ayurveda, the concept of sattva refers to self-acceptance, awareness, and compassion. By cultivating our sattva, we can learn to understand the disposition of both ourselves and our partners. In achieving this higher realm of awareness, we can subsequently better understand how to respond productively when conflicts arise, rather than letting them create harmful feelings of anger or resentment. By understanding our and our partners’ doshas, we can ultimately become more conscientious, loving, and compassionate in our relationships—traits that are certain to encourage greater feelings of connection and togetherness.

UNLOCK YOUR HAIR POTENTIAL : 5 DIY MASKS FOR REVITALIZATION AND EMPOWERMENT

Whether you’re having a bad hair day, trying to repair damaged or chemically-treated hair or simply wanting to pamper yourself, a natural hair mask is a surefire way to combine hair care with luxury.

More heavy-duty than shampoos, hair masks are deep conditioning treatments intended to repair, nourish and revitalize the hair and scalp. While commercial products can become expensive (not to mention the lack of control we have over their ingredients), DIY hair masks are a great way to customize your hair care treatment with ingredients you can find in your kitchen.

Simple natural ingredients like avocado, olive oil and yogurt each offer potent benefits for the hair, providing deep hydration, stimulating growth, promoting healing and repair and more. The best part of making your own mask at home? You can try out different combinations to target your specific needs.

Here are 5 DIY hair masks whose ingredients powerfully combat dryness, damage, frizz and more for health, radiance and repair.

1

For Dryness, Thinness & Frizz: Yogurt & Honey

In Ayurveda, honey is considered a versatile ingredient whose antibacterial and hydrating properties are useful for healing wounds, combating inflammation and providing deep moisture. In terms of hair care, honey acts as an emollient, sealing in and boosting moisture. Its detoxifying properties also enable it to cleanse clogged hair follicles, thereby preventing hair loss. Rich in protein and fats, yogurt is also an excellent tool for restoring moisture and nutrients to the hair. Given its lightweight texture, it also helps to volumize thin hair rather than weigh it down.

To make, add 2-3 tablespoons of honey to a cup of plain yogurt. Massage the resulting mixture into the scalp and through the hair. Wash off with warm water after 10 minutes.

2

For Split Ends: Avocado & Olive Oil

More than a tasty and nutritious topping on salads or toast, avocado also acts as a moisturizing, restorative hair care ingredient. It is especially useful for treating split ends, breakage, coarseness and other signs of damage that result from chemical treatment, heat styling or free radical damage. Olive oil acts as an occlusive, locking in moisture and nutrients while also taming frizz and bringing radiance to damaged hair.

As hair stylist Amy Abramite tells Byrdie, “Avocados have minerals that will seal the cuticle, as well as proteins and vitamins to nourish and soften the hair,” while “a layer of olive oil will add extra shine and sleekness to gloss over the damaged hair.”

To make this healing, glow-inducing mask, mash ½ cup of avocado and ½ cup of olive oil to form a thick mixture. Apply to split ends for 30 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

3

For Damage & Hair Loss: Hibiscus, Honey & Coconut Oil

Hibiscus is a superstar in the beauty and wellness world for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. When applied to the hair, it helps stimulate hair follicles and transmit essential nutrients to the scalp and hair, thereby promoting hair growth. Honey offers moisturizing and cleansing properties, while coconut oil’s fatty acid content enables it to absorb quickly and deeply into the hair, bringing hydration and nutrition. Coconut oil’s antimicrobial properties also help it to unclog pores and help damaged hair appear healthier.

To make this mask, combine 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, 4 tablespoons of crushed hibiscus and three tablespoons of honey. Apply to the scalp and hair for 30 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

4

For Dryness & Dullness: Aloe Vera & Coconut Oil

The antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of aloe vera make it a powerful healing salve. Rich in moisture, it helps to lock in hydration, combating dryness while also providing the hair with nutrients for a healthy, shiny mane. Combined with the hydrating and cleansing qualities of coconut oil, this mask leaves dry, dull hair looking radiant and thick.

To make this mask, combine ½ cup of fresh aloe vera gel with ½ cup of coconut oil. Massage into the scalp and hair. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.

5

For Damage & Buildup: Lemon & Egg

Utilizing purifying and hydrating lemon and egg, this mask is especially useful for those with damaged hair, or for those who experience scalp buildup from products like dry shampoos and hairsprays. Protein-rich egg whites provide essential nutrients to the scalp and hair, helping to combat damage while cleansing the scalp of buildup. Lemon helps to boost hair growth, balance the scalp’s pH levels and promote overall shine.

5 NATURAL HAIR CARE TIPS – THE SECRET TO BETTER HAIR

We get it. Even though you’re curious about natural hair care, you’ve been afraid that the suds-free, supposedly-healthier products might fail you. You’ll end up with a perennially greasy head, or an Albert Einstein untamable frizzy mane, or dull, flat strands that are in dire need of some luster. Here’s the good news: just like skincare, the green beauty hair world has been on the upswing—even Hollywood stars are getting behind it (Natalie Portman uses natural shampoo to treat her fabulous locks). There are many products, both DIY and professionally made, that can do your head a world of good—sans suds. Here are 5 natural hair care tips for nourishing and regenerating your hair.

1

Cut Sulfates Out Of Your Shampoo

By now, you may have heard of the dangers of SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) in shampoo. This ingredient can be harsh on your hair, and when used too frequently can lead to thinning, and strip your hair of its natural oils. However, it’s also the ingredient that creates the foaming effect we’re all used to in shampoos. Many natural shampoos—which leave sulfates out—won’t have as much of that familiar, extra-sudsy feel. But that doesn’t mean you’re sacrificing results! Many natural shampoos cleanse your hair in different ways. Look for shampoos that use oils to cleanse hairs. Oils gently remove excess grease from the roots without stripping hair of its natural oils as other shampoos do. Rahua Classics, for example, uses coconut as the main cleanser.

2

 Try A Powdered Dry Shampoo

Many of us are used to spraying dry shampoo from an aerosol can. While it can be a little intimidating to try a dry shampoo that comes in powder form we can promise you it as just, if not more, effective which makes it even better for those of you who struggle with grease coming back within hours of applying. The natural base for dry shampoo should be an oil absorbing agent like arrowroot or cornstarch, and possibly other ingredients to darken it depending on you hair color. When you use a natural powder dry shampoo, start with less and build your way up, and apply it at the roots with a makeup brush. After a few moments, brush your hair through to ensure it’s completely blended.

Switch To A Natural Hair Mask

After the stresses of heat styling, chemicals and coloring, our hair needs some serious TLC from time to time. This is why hair masks can often be a girl’s best friend. This time, skip the leave-in conditioner. Did you know that there are natural hair masks that have the same results without any harmful or irritating products? A simple, one ingredient mask is coconut oil, one of the best hair oil. Rich in nutrients, this is an excellent natural alternative that can nourish hair. Tip: for certain hair types coconut oil can be more difficult to wash out. Make sure to use a good natural shampoo to wash it out and be prepared to rinse and repeat several times. See some of our favorite natural DIY hair mask ingredients and recipes here.

4

Use A More Natural Mousse

Mousse is a beloved styling agent for many of us trying to achieve a more voluminous look or emulate the perfect wave of a Victoria’s Secret Angel’s mane. Unfortunately, finding a good mousse is difficult because the alcohol dries hair out and often leaves it crunchy. Instead try a simple natural solution: sea salt spray. Try Captain Blankenship’s Mermaid Sea Salt Spray, which doesn’t use any synthetic ingredients, or if you’re so inclined, you can blend a DIY hair mask with this recipe from Elle.

Get Frizz Free Style With Hair Oil

Argan oil and moroccan oil have been popular ingredients for both heat styling and smoothing, but many products that contain these ingredients also contain other chemicals. Organic, pure hair oils are a perfect replacement, and argan and moroccan oil are just the beginning. Try something like fatty acid rich mongongo oil, which works to protect and repair dry or damaged hair as well as treat dry scalp and dandruff. Also, prevents split ends. Products rich in essential oils can also have a plethora of benefits for your hair and scalp. (May we humbly suggest Uma’s new Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil?  It’s perfect for heat styling and smoothing, with a healthy mix of essential oils).

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR BEAUTIFUL, SHINY HAIR: AYURVEDIC WAY

It started in India about 5000 years ago. A science of natural medicine that focused on the synergy of the body and mind. It incorporated powerful remedies made of natural, pure ingredients and addressed the root cause of physical and emotional ailments. And it delivered significant health and wellness benefits.

This was the beginning of Ayurveda—and it has since continued to remind us that beauty and health are rooted in the balanced and dynamic integration between environment, body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda effectively solves modern afflictions and issues, so many that are hard to treat with Western medicines and over-the-counter treatments. It includes only natural ingredients—and so many of the herbal treatments can be made at home. Want glossier, bouncier, shinier hair? Look to these six natural hair-care home remedies below and your tresses will be reflecting more light this summer—and year round. Each of these self-care ingredients can be found at your local farmers’ market or health food store.

And if you’re not looking to make your treatments, UMA’s Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil contains a combination of Ayurvedic ingredients that nourish, clarify, and strengthen your strands.

Moringa Oil

For centuries Ayurvedic physicians have used the leaves and fruits of the Moringa plant to aid hair growth, treat arthritis, improve eye sight, and increase libido and sperm count in males. Moringa leaves pack three times the potassium of bananas, four times the calcium of milk, twenty-five times the iron of spinach, four times the vitamin A of carrots, and seven times the vitamin C of oranges. Using Moringa oil to massage the scalp at least once every week can prevent hair loss. The rich combination of minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins feeds the strands, boosts blood flow to the scalp, and fights oxidative damage.

Once a week massage several drops of Moringa oil into hair and scalp. Leave on overnight and wash out in the morning. (You can also use this as a quick treatment prior to shampooing.)

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) and Fenugreek (Methi)

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) is an herb that works as a local stimulant. It aids in the treatment of skin eruptions, eczema, and ulcers on the scalp. Fenugreek (Methi ) has been used by Ayurveda for thousands of years for hair growth, controlling blood sugar levels, and loss of libido (among other things). Fenugreek contains protein, vitamin C, fiber, iron, potassium, lysine, L-tryptophan, and alkaloids, a combination that prevents premature greying and gives hair luster and a soft texture.

Add five to six tablespoons of a carrier oil to a frying pan and heat it on a low flame for fifteen minutes. Add one teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds (or powder) and about two teaspoons of Bacopa Monnieri herbs (or powder). Heat it for another fifteen minutes and set aside, allowing it to settle for a little while (two days is ideal). Strain the oil into a glass bottle and store in a cool, dark place. Take a few drops of the essential oil for hair and massage it into the scalp daily. Allow to sit for thirty minutes before showering.

Amla (Indian Gooseberry) Oil

Amla (Indian gooseberry) is used extensively in Ayurvedic therapeutic medicine. Sourced from the Indian Gooseberry fruit, it is a rich source of vitamin C and essential fatty acids that keep hair follicles strong and elastic.

Take about half a pound of fresh Indian Gooseberry fruit and remove the seeds completely dry. Let the seeds completely dry and then mix them with about two cups of coconut oil. Store the amla and oil mixture in an airtight glass jar and keep it in the sun for two weeks, or until the oil turns black in color. Once the oil changes color, strain it and store it in a cool, dry place. Massage a few drops of oil into hair and scalp. Leave on for a few minutes before showering.

Hibiscus Flower Extract

Hibiscus is a multi-colored common flowering plant rich in amino acids, vitamins A and C, and alpha hydroxy acids, which are ideal for promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

Dice about twenty red Hibiscus flowers and four thick Hibiscus leaves. Take a frying pan (we love a cast iron skillet) and add about five to six tablespoons of any carrier oil, such as grapeseed or jojoba oil. Add the minced flowers and leaves to the oil and gently heat until fumes appear. For added potency, you can add four to five leaves of fresh basil with a pinch of fenugreek. Switch off the flame and allow the mixture to cool and settle (ideally for several days). Filter and store in a glass bottle. Gently massage several drops into the scalp and wait for an hour before showering.

Curry Leaves

Curry (Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii) leaves have traditionally been used in global cuisines, including Indian cuisine. The leaves resemble those of the popular Ayurvedic herb neem(Azadirachta indica) but have a more pleasing taste and odor. They contain beta-carotene, which strengthens and repairs hair roots, promotes hair growth, and prevents hair loss.

Take about thirty to forty curry leaves, wash them in water, and dry them. Do not expose them to direct sunlight. Add five to six tablespoons of coconut oil to a frying pan on a low flame. Once the oil is heated, add the leaves and allow to simmer for a few minutes. Turn off the heat and let the blend settle and cool (ideally for several hours). Strain the oil into a glass bottle. Take a few drops of the oil and massage into the scalp. Leave on for half an hour before showering.

ANTI-AGING MADE EASY WITH AYURVEDA’S RASAYANA THERAPY

THE CONUNDRUM OF AGING.

When we’re young, we wish that we were older. We pine to stay out late and see R-Rated movies. But as time passes, we find ourselves searching for youth. We amass lotions and potions that swear to reverse the signs of aging and restore us back to that age of innocence.

Here’s a novel idea: Why not embrace aging? Rather than wistfully wishing we were younger, why don’t we honor the changes and all the beautiful knowledge that comes with it? That is what Ayurveda does. Ancient India’s ageless system of medicine proves that the grass can be green at any age—with the right mindset.

Ayurveda teaches us that aging is a gift. It allows us the opportunity to tap into our inner wisdom and celebrate the opportunity of each new day. Ayurveda’s approach to natural anti-aging is known as rasayana chikitsa, a holistic rejuvenation of mind and body that retains youthfulness and vitality. (Rasayana is an ancient sanskrit words that means path of essence.) The ethos of Rasayana is prevention and restoration: Various Rasayana therapy techniques care for the skin, hair, mind, and body, keeping it in optimal health and balance so we age with grace and longevity.

It’s a profound and freeing approach that can have incredible anti-aging benefits for our mind, spirit, body, and complexion.

Rasayana for Skin

Intentionally and consistently caring for the skin is the most powerful way to prevent and reduce signs of aging. As we age the epidermis begins to lose its water retention and the fatty substances that keep skin elastic and moisturized. It’s essential to nurture and replenish the skin with nutrient-rich essential oilshydrating rosewater, and replenishing masks. With every treatment and application, take a moment to massage and appreciate the skin. This will help to keep collagen and circulation boosted and cellular turnover stimulate.

Rasayana for Hair

As we age our hair can grow brittle, dry, damaged, and dull. Ayurvedic treatments get to the root (literally) of aging hair issues. UMA’s Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil delivers clarifying extracts of grapefruit and lemon to remove impurities and nourish follicles, enhancing elasticity and strengthening hair from root to end. If you’re keen to make at at-home natural hair treatment, blend five to six tablespoons of Bhringraj (Ayurveda’s “King of Herbs”) with water to form a paste. Apply to the scalp and leave for twenty minutes before washing out. Bhringraj has been shown to thicken strands, stimulate growth, and prevent premature graying.

Rasayana for Mind

Meditation is an obvious—and important—practice for caring for the mind. Ayurveda recommends meditation coupled with a nutrient-rich diet rich with key Ayurvedic herbs for maintaining intellect and memory as time goes on. Organic carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and seasonal fruit are all recommended “memory foods” (while meat is particularly bad). The Ayurvedic herb Brahmi is highly touted for enhancing memory, cognition, and mood. Steep the herb in boiled water or milk for regenerative cup of tea.

Rasayana for Body

Almonds, walnuts, turmeric, and ghee are also vital ayurvedic ingredients to building ojas, our life essence, within the body. In addition to a balanced diet that fuels our digestive fire and creates ojas, you should also introduce the art of abhyanga, or massage, into your ritual to release toxins, improve muscle tone, and release stress. A 15-minute daily self-massage can make a world of difference in keeping the body limber. Sesame oil is great for aging skin with its warm, calming properties that nurture all of the body’s tissues.

ROSEHIP OIL

Luxuriously aromatic, precious rosehip oil is packed with powerfully-hydrating essential fatty acids, allowing it to incorporate seamlessly onto the skin, offering deep and long-lasting moisture. Rosehip oil is also a dry oil, meaning it absorbs fully into the skin without leaving any sticky residue or shininess. Instead, the skin will be imbued with a radiant & healthy glow.

TURMERIC

Turmeric has been revered in Ayurvedic tradition for thousands of years for its immense healing and therapeutic effects. Full of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric’s benefits include combating heart disease and depression and promoting potent anti-aging effects.
