5 AYURVEDIC HERBS THAT POWERFULLY COMBAT HAIR LOSS

Whether we’re experiencing lots of stress or going through the natural processes of aging, hair loss is something that can happen at any point in our lives. And when it does, we might scratch our heads (both literally and figuratively) wondering how to remedy it.

The first step is to identify why hair loss might be happening. It occurs for a wide number of reasons. Sometimes it’s the result of a genetic predisposition, or conditions like alopecia and anemia. Other times, it can occur post-pregnancy due to a drop in estrogen levels and an increase in cortisol levels, or during the hormonal fluctuations of menopause. As research has shown, diets lacking in essential vitamins, proteins and minerals also impact hair strength and regrowth. In addition, sometimes hair loss—whether minute or significant—can occur simply as a result of stress. As dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler tells Goop, “Hair follicles are sensitive to both physical and emotional stressors.”

It’s important to identify the root cause of hair loss and respond accordingly, whether that’s by improving your dietlearning how to ease the transition into menopause or alleviating stress. In addition, there are a number of Ayurvedic herbs that can help speed up the process of regrowth, promoting the circulation of nutrients, stimulating hair follicles and strengthening the hair. Here are 5 of these herbs—when incorporated into your hair care routine, they can help bring thickness, radiance and health to thinning hair.

ALOE VERA

While many know aloe vera as an effective wound healer, its multitude of anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant properties make it a rejuvenating salve for the hair. Cooling and detoxifying, aloe vera can combat scalp inflammation and effectively treat and prevent dandruff. It also rejuvenates dry scalps thanks to its deeply hydrating effects; as dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D, tells mindbodygreen, “The leaf of the aloe vera plant is rich in water, particularly in the innermost layer, so it helps to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture.”

To cleanse, cool down and hydrate your scalp with aloe vera, simply apply fresh aloe vera gel all over the scalp. Rinse off after 15 minutes.

Aloe for acne

HIBISCUS

Like aloe vera, hibiscus is cooling and cleansing, which enables it to combat inflammation. Rich in Vitamin C, it has long been used as a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss. Rubbing hibiscus into the scalp stimulates hair follicles and boosts the circulation of blood and nutrients into the hair, all of which helps promote the growth of strong, healthy hair.

To promote natural hair growth with this Ayurvedic solution, grind hibiscus flowers and leaves into a thick paste. Apply generously to the scalp and wash off with water. You can apply this paste several times a week to stimulate growth.

TRIPHALA

An ancient polyherbal blend made up of bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki, the benefits of triphala seem endless. Not only is it used in Ayurveda to strengthen the liver, digestion and immunity—its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties enable it to provide potent nourishment to the scalp, cleansing it of impurities and strengthening hair at its roots.

To use triphala as a hair supplement, you can mix water and triphala powder to form a thin paste. Massage into the scalp before rinsing off with water.

FENUGREEK

Rich in essential vitamins, iron and calcium, and full of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek is another powerful tool for promoting scalp health and combating hair loss. Its protein and amino acids allow it to treat hair damage and promote thicker hair growth, while its lecithin provides natural hydration and nourishment to the hair follicles. By combating inflammation and damage while also stimulating healthy circulation, fenugreek helps the hair grow back thicker and more radiant.

INDIAN GOOSEBERRY

As Samar Kullab tells Byrdie, Indian gooseberry is “probably one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods. It has 50 times more antioxidants than blueberries.” This extreme richness of antioxidants, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, is part of what makes Indian gooseberry (or amla) one of the most revered Ayurvedic herbs for the hair. Research has backed up this Ayurvedic wisdom, showing that Indian gooseberry can inhibit the growth of the 5α-reductase enzyme that leads to hair loss. Its antioxidants also help protect the hair from damage, breakage and loss that can occur from pollution, dust and certain styling methods. Furthermore, it is deeply hydrating, ultimately leaving the hair strengthened, thicker and more radiant.

amla

To reap the multitude of Indian gooseberry’s benefits, you can either apply it as a paste or look for it as an ingredient in specialty hair oils. Our own UMA Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil utilizes both Indian gooseberry and hibiscus to promote deep nutrition, hydration and regrowth.

HOW FACE TONERS CAN REVAMP YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

A couple of weeks ago, we broke down the benefits of serum and how it helps the skin absorb essential nutrients to provide targeted results. But even before applying serum, there’s another skincare essential that preps the skin for a glowing, healthy complexion: toner.

When applied before a serum or moisturizer, a toner can go a long way toward helping the skin look even and radiant while also prepping the skin to better absorb the other elements of your routine. But while it’s a word that’s thrown around in the beauty world a lot, you might find yourself unsure of what it actually is. Does it dry skin out or hydrate it? Can I use it even if I have sensitive skin? Here, we break down the purpose and benefits of toner, and guidance on how to incorporate it into your routine.

What Is Toner?

In short, toner has the density and texture of water, allowing it to provide the skin with instant hydration. But it’s more than just water, of course—toners contain a number of additional targeted ingredients that, depending on your desired result, can have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and brightening effects. While in the past toners were rough and drying, utilizing alcohol to remove oil from the skin, today’s toners are designed to gently nourish, hydrate and rejuvenate all skin types.

In addition to hydrating the skin, toners help slough off dead skin cells, bacteria and other impurities, leaving the skin prepped for a more effective, thorough absorption of other products.

“Your skin is like a dried-up sponge. If you put a thick cream on a brittle dry sponge, it won’t accept it and it isn’t ‘prepped’ for moisture. But if you wet the sponge, the cream will sink in more easily.”

Soko Glam co-founder and esthetician Charlotte Cho tells Allure.

Overall, toners help to remove impurities and restore nourishment and moisture to the skin after cleansing, which in turn helps to prime the skin for the rest of your routine. This simple step can ultimately make a big difference in promoting a healthy, hydrated glow.

What Are The Benefits Of Toner?

Gentle and nourishing, different toners are targeted toward different needs. However, their fundamental properties mean that they share the following benefits:

  • They Restore The Skin’s Ph Levels

After cleansing and/or exfoliating, the skin loses some of its natural oils and acidity, causing its pH levels to fluctuate. Toners help restore the skin’s acidic balance, replenishing and refreshing the skin with nutrients.

  • They Remove Impurities

While providing nutrients and hydration to the skin, toners also remove dead skin cells, bacteria, dirt and other impurities that may still linger on the skin after cleansing.

  • They Prime The Skin For Other Products

Like serums, toners also help the skin absorb other products more deeply and effectively, making them great primers for the rest of your routine.

In addition to these benefits, you can choose toners that combat acne and inflammation; promote tightness, evenness and other anti-aging effects; brighten the skin for a natural glow and more.

How Can I Incorporate Toner Into My Routine?

You should apply toner after cleansing/exfoliating and before other serums, oils and moisturizers. If you haven’t used a toner before, start out by applying it once every few days or once every other day, and if it seems beneficial to your skin you can bump it up to once a day. If the toner is gentle and targeted at hydrating and soothing, you can use it twice a day. To apply, you can spray some into your hands or onto a cotton pad and rub gently into the skin in circular motions.

As mentioned before, different toner formulations target different skin types and conditions. At UMA, we have three hydrating, detoxifying toners designed to cover a variety of needs.

We all need boosts; something that changes up our routine and, in turn, adds some extra vitality to the everyday. These boosts can come in endless forms—a wheatgrass shot in a smoothie, an afternoon siesta, a long weekend. For our skin, a boost can come in the form of a face mask—a tightening, hydrating, calming, make-your-complexion-glow face mask.

Our skin is constantly under attack from toxins, UV rays, and environmental impurities, which all take a toll on the complexion. While our daily skin care works to combat these damages, using an occasional face mask for glowing skin can be the ultimate savior because it gives the skin an additional dose of vitamins, minerals, and hydration. And that is a boost of defense against, well, the world.  A face mask can draw out toxins, rid the skin of impurities, deeply hydrate, remove excess oil, and overall give skin a luminous, radiant glow. A once-a-week application can significantly benefit the complexion—after just a few weeks.

Now the question is: Which mask should you buy? Of course, we’re partial to our Absolute Anti-Aging Face MaskUltimate Brightening Face Mask, and Deeply Clarifying Face Mask. 1

Carrot,Honey, And Lemon Mask

This nutrient-rich honey facial mask works as a lightweight and brightening moisturizer. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene and vitamins C and K, three ingredients that slow down the appearance of aging, nourish, and moisturize the skin. Lemon lightens dark spots and aids in cellular turnover. Honey is an excellent natural anti-bacterial agent.

Mash a medium-sized carrot in a food processor. (Alternatively you can grate it.) Add two tablespoons of organic honey and a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to the carrot pulp.

(If your skin is sensitive you can skip the lemon juice.) Apply the mixture to freshly cleansed skin. Leave on for twenty to thirty minutes then rinse off with lukewarm water.

2

 Almond,Honey,And Rosewater Mask

An excellent mask for dry and/or blemished complexion. Almond flour, milk, and honey deeply nourish the skin while rosewater serves as a brightening toner.

Mix two tablespoons each of milk powder and almond flour with one tablespoon each of honey and rosewater. Apply this paste evenly to the face, neck, and décolleté. Leave on for twenty minutes (it will get a bit dry). Rinse with cold water. This mask is gentle enough to use daily. To brighten hyperpigmentation problems, apply the mask to specific spots and leave on overnight.

Fenugreek With Milk Powder And Sandalwood Mask

Fenugreek, an incredible antioxidant-rich medicinal herb commonly used in Ayurveda, naturally lightens dark spots, protects skin from sun damage, treats blemishes, and evens the skin’s appearance. Simply put: It’s amazing. Milk powder naturally contains lactic acid, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B6, and C- all of which are essential vitamins for skin. It makes an excellent skin cleanser, leaving skin supple and soft.

Add water to attain desired consistency then apply to the face. Leaving on for twenty to thirty minutes. Wash off with cold water. Use this mask once a week for best results.

4

 Yogurt And Egg White Mask

Yogurt contains zinc and lactic acid, which respectively eases inflammation and exfoliates. Massaging plain yogurt onto the face removes dead cells, tightens the pores, eases fine lines, and hydrates. When using yogurt in your skin care make sure to stay away from the flavored and sweetened varieties.

For an exfoliating face mask, you can mix the whites of two eggs with two tablespoons of plain yogurt, apply the mixture to freshly cleansed skin, and leave it on for about seven minutes before washing off with warm water and following with a final cool water rinse.

5

 Banana And Sandalwood Mask

Bananas are superstars for the skin. They’re loaded with vitamin B6, iron, manganese, vitamin C, potassium, biotin, and copper. These nutrients help to rejuvenate the complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Sandalwood helps to balance the skin’s oil production—for both dry and oily skin—as it harmonizes the skin’s natural oil production instead. Sandalwood also calms inflammations and gives the skin a radiant glow.

Mash ripe banana until it reaches an even, creamy consistency. Mix in sandalwood powder. Apply the mask all over the face, neck, and décolleté. Let it dry and leave on for twenty minutes. Rinse off with warm water. This mask is excellent for weekly use.

6

 Yogurt,Oatmeal,And Honey Mask

Oatmeal gently exfoliates dead cells. Honey provides antibacterial and antimicrobial action while also being an exceptional skin moisturizer. These two ingredients combined leave skin bright, dewy, and hydrated.

Mix two tablespoons of oatmeal with three tablespoons of plain yogurt. Add a dash of honey and stir together until the mixture is even. (Allow honey to come to room temperature first to allow for easier mixing.) Apply the mask to the face neck, and décolleté. Allow to dry for ten minutes then wash off with warm water. (Add half tablespoon of powdered rice to the mix to help clear pores and rid blemishes.)

SUMMER-PROOF YOUR OILY SKIN: SKINCARE TIPS TO TRY NOW

The onset of summer means warm weather, sunny days and time spent with family and friends. As the sun comes out, our spirits rise, and we feel ready to enjoy the summer days ahead of us. But for some of us, especially those who live in more humid climates, summer can also mean sweaty, oily skin that is more prone to breakouts, dehydrated skin, irritation, and so more.

However, one’s skin need not deter one from enjoying the warm weather. In Ayurveda, it is believed that the mind, body, spirit and external environment are intimately connected, and as such, we need to respond attentively to changes in our environment to maintain overall health. When the seasons change, it is best to adjust one’s lifestyle practices accordingly, a philosophy that is encompassed by the concept of Ritucharya. By doing so, we can maximize balance and minimize any irritation or inflammation that can result from a change in the external world.

In Ayurveda, summer is ruled by Pitta, which is oily, hot, sharp, light and liquid. Especially for those with naturally oily skin, summertime tends to increase the oiliness, sebum production and liquidity of Pitta, making one more susceptible to breakouts.

If you find that Pitta feels exacerbated during the summer, there are a number of Ayurvedic tips for combating breakouts and restoring balance to the skin.

SUMMERTIME TIPS FOR COMBATING ACNE, INFLAMMATION & OILINESS

Soffer combines South Indian and North Indian styles of Panchakarma. And because she practices in California, she incorporates native Western herbs to replace what she can’t get from India.

Depending on what someone needs from their Panchakarma cleanse, here are some of the treatments Soffer might offer.

1. Cleanse Your Face Daily—But Not Too Often!

During summer, we tend to spend more time outdoors, which also means that there are more opportunities for toxins, dust and debris to accumulate on our skin. (For more on Ayurvedic tips for remedying the negative effects of pollution, check out our recent blog here.) To remove excess dirt and oil, it’s important to wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser and provide proper Hydration. Ayurveda recommends not washing your face more than 3 or 4 times a day, though, which will dry out your skin and stimulate more oil production—which is the opposite of what we want.

2. Don’t Over-Exfoliate

Similarly to how it can be harmful to wash your face too often, exfoliating too often also strips the skin of its natural oils, which are necessary for protecting and hydrating the skin. While exfoliating is good for removing debris and dead skin cells, which can cause breakouts and other inflammatory problems if they accumulate, try not to exfoliate more than twice or three times a week.

3. Try Out a Lightweight, Clarifying Face Oil

While adding face oil to oily skin might seem like a big no-no, a clarifying, detoxifying and lightweight essential oil can work wonders for spot treating imperfections. While many acne creams and solutions can be extremely drying for the skin, a face oil can help skin retain a healthy moisture while combating the root cause of blemishes. Our UMA Deeply Clarifying Blemish Spot Treatment, for example, harnesses the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and infection-combating powers of tea tree, clove, grapeseed and more to provide targeted relief for blemishes.

I have naturally oily skin myself, and whenever I experience an unexpected breakout, I apply a small amount of our Blemish Spot Treatment to the affected areas. It amazingly reduces and soothes irritation, all while keeping my skin hydrated.

4. Use a Detoxifying Face Mask

Applying a face mask several times a week is a great way to thoroughly and deeply extract impurities from the skin, leaving it more hydrated, radiant and toned afterward.

Especially for those who struggle with acne and oiliness, we recommend trying our UMA Deeply Clarifying Face Mask

5. Keep Your Hair Out Of Your Face

Our scalp and hair can be another extraneous source of oil production, especially during the hot summer days. Try keeping your hair out of your face during the summer months to avoid excess oil and irritation.

6. Don’t Touch Your Face!

Our hands harbor impurities, dirt and oil, and when we touch our face unnecessarily we introduce those external factors onto our skin. Avoid touching your face whenever possible to prevent unnecessary breakouts.

7. Use a Toner For Soothed, Radiant Skin

Toners help to hydrate, brighten and nourish the skin without leaving it feeling too heavy or weighed down with formula, making them essentials for summer skincare. A light spritz of toner helps to clarify and cleanse the skin of toxins while also providing both moisture and coolness. We recommend our UMA Deeply Clarifying Aloe Alum Toner, which harnesses aloe, tea tree and rose water to offer potent cleansing and detoxifying benefits, regulating oil production, reducing blemishes and clearing the skin of impurities.

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS: UMA OIL REVEALS 7 ESSENTIAL OILS

Often touted as miracle ingredients, argan oil and coconut oil have rapidly become household names. While it’s true that both of these oils are excellent natural beauty products, there are many new kids on the block that also deserve a moment in the spotlight. After some rigorous – and occasionally messy – experimentation, we’ve chosen our top 7 ayurvedic hair oils for taming your mane, incorporating these in your hair care routine might do wonders.

Agave Oil

As one study demonstrates, Indian gooseberry extract promotes the production of pro-collagen (a precursor to collagen) and also helps prevent the breakdown of collagen. As a key to maintaining skin elasticity, this collagen stimulation thus helps the skin remain firm and youthful. By forming the protein matrix in the skin, the presence of collagen also contributes to skin strength and brightness. Thus, in boosting collagen production, Indian gooseberry helps the skin become firm, bright, and healthy like a natural face mask.

Jojoba Oil

Our scalp naturally produces oils to rejuvenate and cleanse the hair, but unfortunately the early stages of this process can leave hair looking greasy. If you’re not willing to put up with a few days of liberal dry shampoo application, Jojoba oil may be a great blemish solution for you. It mimics the qualities of the natural oils your body produces, and may trick your scalp into slowing down its oil production process. Jojoba oil not only offers deep moisture, but also works as a scalp cleanser, ensures strong and thick hair and dandruff-fighting solution!

Almond Oil

If your hair tends to be on the dry side, almond can give you a much need moisture boost. This sweet smelling oil is on the heavier side, which makes it ideal for sealing in moisture and protecting hair from the harmful effects of blow dryers and heated styling tools.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D, E and B6, meaning it is ultra nourishing for dry or over processed hair. The fatty acids found in this oil can penetrate the scalp and hair to fortify it and add a deep shine. We love how lightweight this oil feels, and how well it works across hair types!

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is a great choice for those who suffer from a dry scalp or are prone to bouts of dandruff. Safflower oil is high in omega-6 and deeply penetrates the scalp to rid it of debris that can irritate skin and diminish shine. Compared to some of its peers, safflower oil is also quite the bargain! It is one of the best oils for hair growth.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil may not be as common as some of our other picks, but it’s an incredible tool for treating greasy scalps and hair. This oil has natural antifungal properties, and helps to cleanse your scalp of impurities and promote hair growth – with minimal greasy residue. We’re also in love with the fragrance of rosemary oil – it has our hair smelling almost good enough to eat!

Amla Oil

Also known as Indian Gooseberry oil, Amla oil is much loved around globe and works well across hair types. It’s a great pick for deep cleansing the scalp, which will in turn promote hair growth. Long term users of Amla oil also swear by its anti-graying properties – and when it comes to avoiding chemical hair dyes, we’re all ears!

And of course, UMA’s Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil contains all the oils you need for beautiful and strong hair.

AYURVEDIC SECRETS FOR STRONGER AND HEALTHIER BONDS

The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda offers many potent health, wellness, and beauty solutions that have persisted throughout the ages. Many know about the benefits of yoga on our physical and mental health, for example, or about the transformative potential of Ayurvedic self-massage. But Ayurvedic wisdom extends even further than these benefits, and to places even more profound than the realms of health and wellness. As a philosophy that promotes balance and holistic unity, Ayurveda also offers a powerful mindset and framework for experiencing romantic love. In Ayurveda, not only is it important to attain balance within oneself between mind, body, and soul—it’s also crucial to achieving harmony with our environment and with those around us.

There are few areas where the ideas of balance and unity take on a more important role than in the realm of romantic relationships. In Ayurvedic tradition, the concept of doshas offers one lens through which we can learn how to achieve greater balance in our romantic relationships. According to Ayurveda, while most of us contain a combination of all three doshas within us, one dosha typically acts as a dominant force making up our constitution. It’s crucial that we maintain balance within and among our doshas, because if we don’t, both physical and emotional ailments can arise.

Just as we need to find the right balance for our dosha within our own bodies, it’s also important to find balance between the doshas of people who are in a relationship with each other. Each dosha gravitates toward a different way of experiencing love and relationships. Understanding one’s dosha can therefore help partners understand each others’ relationship styles and encourage partners to work together to find doshic balance rather than let arguments or disagreements push them farther apart. Here’s a brief breakdown of each dosha’s relationship style, along with advice on how to achieve relationship balance through the lens of the Ayurvedic doshas.

HOW EACH DOSHA LOVES

VATA

Vatas are dominated by ether and air. As a result, they are like the wind—fast-moving, creative, and full of ideas. They are social and spontaneous. They bring adventure and energy to their relationships. However, due to their more ethereal and light constitution, imbalances can cause them to have a weak digestive system, sleep lightly, and run cold. Emotionally, vatas can easily feel ungrounded, leading them to become at times insecure and anxious within their relationships. However, this anxiety can be alleviated by words of reassurance and affirmation from their partner. So if your vata partner seems stressed or insecure, don’t leave them to battle it out on their own—tell them how much you appreciate and value them.

PITTA

Pittas, ruled by the fire element, are very driven, motivated, and passionate. They are meticulous, organized, and great at envisioning and executing their goals. In short, pittas get things done. However, this strong fiery energy can lead them to experience “digestive fires” like acid reflux and inflammation when imbalanced. They may become irritable and impatient, and, as they speak their minds with frankness and ease, they may end up saying things their partner doesn’t want to hear. Having patience with a pitta when they enter these modes is key—when they’re feeling better, they respond with deep passion, commitment, and a love fueled by fire.

KAPHA

Dominated by earth and water, kaphas are grounded, stable, and loving presences. They are consistent and calm, committed and sweet. However, when imbalanced, they tend to become lethargic, sad, and unwilling to make changes. They might gain weight or experience more severe allergic reactions. When a kapha is in a rut, their partner should help them get off the couch and insert some exciting changes into their routine. Go to a movie or a concert together, or go on a short trip somewhere new—you’ll be sure to experience an exciting reinvigoration of your relationship, too.

HOW TO ACHIEVE RELATIONSHIP BALANCE—REGARDLESS OF YOUR DOSHIC COMBINATION

While there are some doshic combinations that, on the surface, are more compatible than others, one of the most important things in any relationship is to pay close attention to your partner’s needs, wants, and feelings. It’s also extremely important to recognize your own tendencies and flaws, and to prevent them from causing unnecessary trouble or conflict in your relationship. Regardless of dosha, if you have an awareness of the compositional tendencies of both yourself and your partner, you can work together toward achieving a healthy, nurturing balance.

In Ayurveda, the concept of sattva refers to self-acceptance, awareness, and compassion. By cultivating our sattva, we can learn to understand the disposition of both ourselves and our partners. In achieving this higher realm of awareness, we can subsequently better understand how to respond productively when conflicts arise, rather than letting them create harmful feelings of anger or resentment. By understanding our and our partners’ doshas, we can ultimately become more conscientious, loving, and compassionate in our relationships—traits that are certain to encourage greater feelings of connection and togetherness.

WHY NAVEL THERAPY IS A POWERFUL SELF-CARE PRACTICE: A Q&A WITH HEATHER BAINES

Navel therapy or navel oiling—filling the belly button with warm oil or ghee—is a centuries-old practice for detoxifying, nurturing, and treating ailments in the body.

In Ayurvedic tradition, the navel (nabhi) represents the origin of life. It links mother and child before birth and provides a hub for nutrients to flow between their bodies. “This is the place of our first nourishment as we developed in our mother’s womb,” says Heather Baines AD C-AP. The philosophy of navel therapy (also referred to as nabhi chikitsanabhi purana, or nabhi basti) informs us that the navel continues to serve as a center of balance in adulthood. It is where the nabhi marma—a central and very powerful energy center—resides says Baines, an Ayurvedic Doctor certified by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, and founder and managing director of Roots of Wellness, a cooperative of Ayurvedic practitioners located in Boulder, Colorado. And because the belly button presents an abundance of blood vessels and pathways to the body’s extremities, the absorption of oils through the navel pathways is strong.

Having recently launched our new Navel Therapy Oils (one for reinvigorating skin, one for balancing the digestive system and renewing energy reserves) we asked Baines for her insight on navel therapy, why it’s beneficial for our health, and how the practice is a simple, renewing, blissful act of self-care. “Give yourself the time and space to luxuriate in warm oils applied to the navel,” says Baines. “Your mind, your body, and your health will benefit and your skin will glow with daily practice.”

TALKING NAVEL THERAPY WITH HEATHER BAINES, AD C-AP

Q

How does navel therapy work?

A

The daily practice of applying warm oil to the navel gently stabilizes Vayu, the air element seated in Manipura, the third chakra and energy center located within the navel and abdomen.

Warm oil is recommended for the practice of navel oiling for it honors, soothes, and calms Vata dosha—the dosha that is the balance and functional integrity of Vayu, the air element, and Akasha, the element of space and the container that holds manifest reality and the universe’s creative living impulse. An excess of Vata is the root of all imbalance, according to Ayurvedic principles, as Vata is known by its subtle, mobile, and cold qualities (among others) and as the prime mover in the body.

When Vata is upset, Vata will push around the life energies of Pitta dosha and Kapha dosha, creating chaos in our body systems and mind. This can make us feel ungrounded, spacey, dry, weak, and fatigued. The daily self-care practice of abhyanga—using warm oils on the body—and modified nabhi basti—using warm oil on the navel—is a luxurious and life giving practice, dedicated to honoring and pacifying Vata and supporting our wellbeing with stable, steady, and unctuous life giving goodness.

Q

What are the benefits?

A

The primary benefit of navel oiling is the pacification of Vata, which helps us feel grounded, warm, and well nourished. Pooling oils in the navel cavity is primarily used to pacify and calm Vata and Pitta, where the seat of Vata is the colon and the seat of Pitta is the duodenum, small intestine, or lower stomach. Ingredients considered to be cooling by Ayurvedic practitioners and doctors, also referred to as shita virya, are helpful for pacifying Pitta.

Using warm oils in the navel can help to ease improper digestion and discomfort associated with gas and bloating, regulate agni or our digestive fire, and improve regular daily elimination of wastes from the bowels.

Q

What is its history?

A

While navel oiling is not mentioned specifically in the three great classic Ayurvedic texts known as the Brihad Trayi, the function, location, and primary importance of the navel and umbilicus in the developing life of the fetus is clearly depicted in Ayurvedic anatomy. The marmas, or vital energy points are also thoroughly documented, with nabhi as one of the mahamarmani or “great marmas.” These vital energy centers are the center of agni or the digestive center, the center of consciousness located in the third eye or center of the forehead, and the heart center, which is the center of love, devotion, and life-giving circulation.

The closest reference to nabhi basti in the Ayurvedic texts comes from the Bhavaprakasha, written around 1400, in which a dam of Amalaki paste is constructed around the navel and filled with ginger juice.

Q

What is your advice for getting beneficial results?

A

For best benefit a warm oil navel massage should be performed daily.

The only exception to this rule is if you require detoxification procedures to remove and expel impurities resulting from poor or incomplete digestion and environmental toxins. Panchakarma—the five actions of deep detoxification—may be recommended prior to daily application of warm oils for best benefit.

It is recommended to combine the daily practice of applying oils externally with other Ayurvedic wellness approaches including internal plant-based herbal formulas, balanced diet, and healthy lifestyle.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN COSMETICS

We realize that there’s a lot of fear-mongering about “toxic makeup” when discussing the beauty industry. We also realize that there’s a lot of greenwashing. And even as producers of organic ingredients and products without synthetic additives, we realize that not all “chemicals in makeup” are created equal – and some are far harsher than others. We don’t mean to say that the occasional swipe of your favorite red lipstick is cause for alarm. We simply mean to say: your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it’s porous – meaning it absorbs the majority of what you put on it. Hence, arm yourself with facts about what you may be putting on it. Remember: YOU will always be your biggest healthcare advocate and ally, so it’s worth getting informed and making the decision that feels right for you.

Here’s a starter list of some of the makeup ingredients to avoid when choosing new products to add to your beauty regimen – and things to consider when reevaluating the items that are already in your arsenal. Also, if you told us that all things must be approached with a sense of moderation, especially as science on a lot of these is still getting strengthened with more research – we’ll be the first to agree!

THE FACTS

US research shows that 1 in 8 of the 82,000 ingredients found in cosmetic and personal care items double as industrial ingredients – some of which can be toxic. Here are a few examples:

Ethylene Oxide

Ethylene Oxide is classified as a human carcinogen, originally intended to sterilize hospital equipment. Yet, we unwittingly slather it onto our hair and bodies in the form of shampoo and shower gel! This chemical is also used as a fumigant in agriculture – and if it’s used to kill pests, it can’t be doing too much in the way of nourishing your skin!

Petroleum

Petroleum jelly is a soft paraffin, used in lip balms and creams to soothe dry skin. The dangers of petroleum use have been discussed for years now, mainly due to the cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons they contain. Because of this widespread awareness, it’s possible you’re already avoiding petrolatum in lip and skin products, but be aware that they are also added to shampoo and other hair products to give hair a glossy sheen!

Lead

This may come as a shock to you, but many of your favorite cosmetic products may contain lead, a compound that’s well known for its harmful effects. This neurotoxin is found in hundreds of cosmetic products, ranging from nail polish to toothpaste, and can potentially contribute to side effects like infertility and learning and developmental delays in children.

Siloxanes

Siloxanes are used in the industry for their softening and moisturizing effects, and are largely found in night creams, sunscreen, and body lotions. However, they’re also widely used industrially, as water repellants, windshield coatings, and building sealants. They’re also a known reproductive toxin, so tread carefully.

DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (Triethanolamine)

These chemicals have been linked to some liver and kidney cancers, due to their hormone changing properties. They are also very widespread in use, and are especially prevalent in foaming shampoos and body washes. While many of us believe that foaming cleansing products are essential to feeling clean, it’s important to note that foam boosting agents like DEA, MEA, and TEA, can sometimes have side effects that outweigh their benefits.

Parabens

You’ve probably heard this term before, as parabens have become the poster child for harmful chemicals that have made their way into popular cosmetic and household products, like face moisturizer and antiperspirant. Paraben traces are frequently found in breast cancer patients, and they’ve been linked to breast cancer for their estrogen mimicking properties in the body.

Q

1. How do I know what I am putting into my body?

A

This is just a small sampling of the common chemicals found in our bathroom cabinets, including harmful phthalates found in fragrances. With the extensive ingredient list on the back of most bottles, it’s easy to see why people feel confused or overwhelmed. That said, it’s not enough to assume that if an ingredient made its way into a product, it’s safe to use. Here are a few tips for being more aware in your shopping choices!

  • Avoid the generic term “fragrance,” as it is likely code for dozens of chemicals, including harmful phthalates.
  • Don’t be fooled by the front of a bottle that claims to be “kind to your skin”  as there is little regulation for these claims. Flip over the bottle and pore over the ingredients for yourself!
  • Use online resources like EWG’s Top Tips for Safer Products – identify the products you use the most, and see whether they need to be substituted for safer alternatives.
  • Make the most of your smartphone with the ThinkDirty app, which is a great on-the-go tool for evaluating ingredients in store.
  • Shop for beauty products at health stores and ethical beauty stores that have a reputation for curating the selection of products they carry according to the quality of their ingredients.

Q

2. How harmful can it be?

A

A growing amount of evidence shows that the effects of cosmetics on our bodies are much more than skin deep, which is why it’s crucial to think critically about what ingredients to avoid in makeup and what we put onto our bodies. With conditions like cancer, hormone imbalances, and eczema showing signs of being caused or exacerbated by chemicals used in daily life, it’s crucial that we think critically about what we put onto our bodies.

According to research, even common, chronic conditions like asthma can be exacerbated by the chemicals parents use in common baby products. Researchers at Columbia University followed 300 mothers from pregnancy through when their children turned 11, and noticed that those mothers who were exposed to higher levels of phthalates were more likely to have children with asthma or respiratory difficulties.

On the other end of the spectrum, research from Washington University in St Louis indicates that exposure to chemicals, including those commonly found in make up, can lead to early menopause in women. Although they’ve stated that further research will be required to draw conclusions, this information still provides some food for thought. Many of us start using our favorite cosmetic products when we’re teens, and continue using them for the rest of our lives!

Q

3. So, what now?

A

We don’t suggest you panic and throw out all of your favorite beauty products, but it is a good idea to take stock of what you use now, and evaluate the simple changes you can make moving forward, such as choosing paraben-free lipstick. In the past few years, many affordable natural products have made their way into mainstream stores and pharmacies! Online resources like Safe Products are a great way to find paraben-free items that will keep you looking great, without risking your health in the long term. And, of course, remember that less can be more – going make up free can be refreshing, too!

We pride ourselves on transparency at Uma – the ingredients in our farm-to-bottle oils are organically grown and handcrafted on our family farm.

PANCHAKARMA DETOX: THE ULTIMATE WAY TO REJUVENATE YOUR BODY AND MIND

Whether you’re longing for a much-needed break from work or looking for a new way to practice self-care & cleansing ritual, Panchakarma is a powerful detoxification program that can provide physical, mental, and spiritual rejuvenation—leaving you revitalized and grounded as you re-enter your daily self-care routine. An ancient Ayurvedic cleansing process that restores balance to the body through practices like oil massages, kitchari cleanses, and herbal therapy, Panchakarma can last between several days and three weeks. And when you emerge, you’re not only left feeling mentally revitalized and grounded as you re-enter your daily life, but your body is also better-equipped to fight off conditions like inflammation and digestion issues.

Curious to learn more about Panchakarma, and maybe even to try one out yourself? We’ll break down the basics of this ancient Ayurvedic tradition—including its traditional roots, modern-day applications, and benefits—to help answer all your holistic detoxification questions.

Q

1.  What Is Panchakarma?

A

In short, Panchakarma is a multi-day detoxification program that cleanses and removes toxins—or ama—from the body in order to restore its natural balance. Unlike Western systems of medicine, which treat disease based on pre-existing symptoms, Ayurveda is intended to proactively promote good health. Since the untreated accumulation of ama in the body can lead to severe imbalance and disease, practices like Panchakarma cleanse the body and counter that accumulation in order to prevent these negative effects from manifesting themselves.

The Five Elements of Classic Panchakarma

Traditionally, a Panchakarma includes five classic detoxifying elements:

  • Vamana: Therapeutic emesis or vomiting that clears excess mucus from the respiratory and upper gastrointestinal tract, which helps prevent bronchitis, coughs, and other respiratory conditions.
  • Basti: Herbal oil enema that purifies toxins in the colon and other intestines to treat conditions like constipation, arthritis, joint disorders, dryness, and insomnia.
  • Nasya: Nasal administration that clears the sinuses, throat, and chest areas to treat conditions like migraine, congestion, and facial paralysis.
  • Virechana: Purgation of the intestines to purify the lower gastric tract and treat conditions like hemorrhoids and jaundice.
  • Raktamokshana: Bloodletting to clear the bloodstream of impurities.

As these are the classic practices of Panchakarma, not all of them can be viably practiced today. Thus, they have been modified to treat patients in modern Panchakarmas.

The Modern – Day Process Of Panchakarma

Today, in a formal Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic practitioner at a clinic can guide you toward a personalized treatment program based on your conditions and your dosha. (Note: Doshas reflect the body’s Ayurvedic constitution, including one’s physical, mental, and emotional traits, and you can use our quiz to determine your dominant dosha here.) A Panchakarma also involves a pre-treatment phase, where a professional evaluates your lifestyle behaviors and conditions in order to recommend diet modifications, and a post-treatment phase, where you incorporate the practices you’ve learned into your daily routine for lasting benefits.

Once you arrive at a clinic, Panchakarma typically includes treatments like steam baths, oil and lymphatic massages, specialized diet regimens, laxative treatments, and nasal administrations. All of these derive from the 5 classic principles, and they can be tailored to best suit your needs. Given the interconnected nature of the mind and body, a Panchakarma also includes treatments aimed at improving mental and emotional health as well—you may spend time meditating, digital detoxing, practicing yoga, or journaling. All in all, Panchakarma is a holistic ayurvedic treatment, one which will not only purify and refresh your body, but will also leave you feeling mentally and emotionally re-centered and calm.

Q

 2. Why Undergo A Panchakarma?

A

The benefits of doing a Panchakarma are wide-reaching and holistic: not only does this detoxification program help clear the body of impurities and prevent disease, but it also encourages a union of the body and mind that leaves participants with a better understanding of their physical and mental wellness.

In addition, the impact of a Panchakarma’s purifying practices don’t have to end when your retreat ends—thanks to the post-treatment phase of a Panchakarma, you are encouraged to incorporate the tools you gain into your everyday life, leading to long-lasting health benefits. While a formal Panchakarma requires time and commitment, it is a worthwhile investment. By learning about meditation, detoxification, yoga, and dosha-specific diet recommendations, you’ll leave a Panchakarma empowered to be proactive about your health in the long-term. As one study showed, undergoing a Panchakarma helps to effectively instill healthier lifestyle patterns that people actually stick to.

To summarize, Panchakarma has a wide variety of health and wellness benefits, including:

  • Strengthened immune system
  • Physical rejuvenation, relaxation, and purification
  • Mental and emotional groundedness, energy, and clarity
  • Reduction of mental and physical stress and anxiety
  • Restoration of internal balance
  • Incorporation of long-lasting beneficial practices

Q

 3. When Should You Do A Panchakarma?

A

Panchakarma restores balance, especially during periods of stress, transition, or change, which can exacerbate imbalance in the body. In traditional Ayurvedic practice, one should undergo a Panchakarma when the seasons change in order to reorient one’s mind and body to the changing physical landscape. However, you can also undergo a Panchakarma whenever you feel you are in a state of imbalance or illness; a Panchakarma treatment can help you get to the root of the problem and revitalize your mind and body from the inside out.

While it is most beneficial to undergo this kind of formal Panchakarma, where an Ayurvedic practitioner can guide you toward correct practices and techniques, it may not always be possible to commit to Panchakarma on a regular basis. However, it’s also possible to reap some of the benefits of Panchakarma from the comfort and ease of your home—we’ve outlined methods for carrying out your own DIY at-home Panchakarma here.

Overall, a Panchakarma is an excellent way to take charge of your health and well-being with some necessary detoxification and impurification. From improving digestive issues and gut health to enhancing mental clarity and groundedness, the benefits of a Panchakarma are endless. And best of all, these benefits don’t just stop once a formal Panchakarma ends—with the right tools and techniques, you can continue to care for yourself in a meaningful and lasting way. So what are you waiting for? Detox away!
