Why We Love
Gotu Kola
Gotu kola, a perennial plant native to India, Japan, China, Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the South Pacific, belongs to the parsley family. Thriving near water, it has fan-shaped green leaves, white or light purple-to-pink flowers, and small oval fruit. The leaves and stems of gotu kola are used for medicinal purposes. Used in traditional and scientific medicine for centuries, gotu kola (also known as Centella Asiatica) offers various benefits. It hydrates, contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, improves circulation, and promotes collagen production. Active compounds in Centella asiatica include asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid. It effectively treats small wounds, hypertrophic wounds, burns, psoriasis, and scleroderma, and promotes fibroblast proliferation. Furthermore, it enhances collagen synthesis, improves skin strength, and inhibits inflammation in hypertrophic scars and keloids. Research suggests it can also address photoaging skin, cellulite, and striae. Apart from its skin benefits, gotu kola historically treated syphilis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever, and asthma. Today, it is commonly used for varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and as an ointment for psoriasis and wound healing. However, note that gotu kola is different from kola nut (Cola nitida) and lacks caffeine and stimulating effects. |
