Why We Love

Tamas

Tamas is one of the three fundamental qualities, or gunas, in Ayurveda. The other two are Sattva and Rajas. Tamas represents inertia, darkness, and stagnation. It is associated with heaviness, dullness, and lethargy. It is the quality of solidity that keeps things intact and its power is one of resistance to change.

In terms of physical health, Tamas can manifest as a lack of energy or enthusiasm for life. It can also be seen in an individual’s mental state as confusion, depression, or apathy. In terms of diet, Tamasic foods are those that are stale, heavy to digest, or overly processed.

Ayurveda teaches that balance between the three gunas is essential for optimal health and wellbeing. When Tamas becomes too dominant it can lead to feelings of depression or apathy; when balanced with Sattva and Rajas it can help us find stability and peace in our lives.
