Vrikshasana, also known as the Tree Pose, is an ancient yoga posture that has been used by Hindu sages for centuries. It is a balancing pose that helps to maintain stillness and flexibility of the body. Vrikshasana is derived from the Sanskrit words “vrksa” meaning “tree” and “asana” meaning “position.”

The main purpose of this pose is to strengthen and acclimate the legs to a higher level of endurance. It also aids in improving leg flexibility, strengthens the spine, improves neuro-muscular coordination, tones the leg muscles and strengthens hip joints. Additionally, it plays an important role in preventing and treating disease according to Ayurveda which specifically deals with mind-body balance.

To perform Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), stand straight with your feet together and arms at your sides. Then bend one leg and place it high up on your other thigh while extending your arms above your head. Make sure that you keep your spine straight throughout the pose. Hold this position for a few breaths before releasing back into standing position. Repeat on the other side.
