ANTI-AGING ESSENTIALS: HOW TO ACHIEVE A RADIANT COMPLEXION WITH AYURVEDA

Nothing signals youthfulness, restfulness, and health like a radiant complexion. A subtle glow instantly brightens the skin and elevates the appearance. It comes as no surprise that people are always looking for ways to achieve a “naturally glowing skin” —and new products are always being released to meet this demand, leaving many to wonder what actually works.

In order to attain that long-lasting radiance, it’s important to tackle the problems underlying skin dullness. The Ayurvedic focus on approaching wellness and beauty concerns holistically, treating their root causes rather than merely their symptoms, offers a number of solutions to skin dullness that are natural, organic, and beneficial for both mind and body. Here, we’ll break down the causes of skin dullness and how Ayurveda can help us regain a youthful, luminous complexion with natural skincare.

What Causes Skin Dullness?

As we age, our skin tends to become less radiant for a number of reasons. Our skin cells regenerate at a slower rate, making them more susceptible to developing wrinkles, age spots, and a generally dull complexion. In addition, our collagen production slows, causing our skin to become looser and less bright. As dermatologist Gary Goldenberg tells mindbodygreen, “When we are young, our bodies produce more collagen than we break down. That balance tips the wrong way with age since tissue regeneration decreases.” Our skin also becomes dryer and rougher, losing that hydration that imbues skin with a healthy glow.

In addition to the natural aging process, there are a number of other factors that speed up the appearance of dullness, including:

  • Oxidative Stress: When our bodies don’t possess enough antioxidants to neutralize free radicals, or when we’re exposed to an excess of free radicals, oxidative stress results. Research shows that oxidative stress is linked to visible signs of aging—like wrinkles, dullness, and age spots—and age-related diseases. Unfortunately, we encounter an excess of free radicals at many points in our modern lives through factors like sun exposure, pollution, and stress, which speeds up the process of aging.
  • Pollution & Other Environmental Factors: In addition to creating free radicals, pollution also negatively affects our skin by blocking our pores and infiltrating our skin, causing inflammation. Research also points out a link between pollution and skin dryness, which causes a further loss of radiance.
  • Stress: When we’re stressed, our blood pressure levels rise, which in turn strains our vein walls and makes it more difficult for blood to circulate. This decrease in circulation leads to a loss of luminosity. Furthermore, chronic stress leads to long-term inflammation, which further exacerbates dullness.
  • Diet: In order to effectively fight off free radical damage and oxidative stress, our diet needs to be rich with antioxidants that come from natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables. In addition to other health problems, studies show that a high intake of sugar, including processed sugars and starches, is tied to visible signs of aging in the skin.
  • Dead Skin Cells: Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells, which helps the skin look renewed and brightened. When an excess of dead skin cells accumulates on the skin, pores can become clogged and the complexion can look dry and dull.

What Can We Do To Regain Radiance And Glow?

Given the many factors that contribute to skin dullness, it can feel daunting to try to find effective methods to increase luminosity. Fortunately, Ayurveda offers a number of all-natural approaches that will not only increase skin radiance, but improve your holistic wellness and overall health.

1

OIL PULLING

This restorative, all-natural Ayurvedic ritual is a self-care practice that can make a major difference if added to your daily routine. Beneficial for the skin, teeth, and overall health, oil pulling involves swishing 1-2 teaspoons of oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. As studies show, this process extracts toxins, bacteria, and other impurities that lead to conditions like inflammation, indigestion, disease, and acne. As a result, the body becomes increasingly detoxified and balanced, and reduced inflammation allows the skin to become radiant. Furthermore, oil pulling whitens the teeth and promotes fresher breath, leaving the teeth radiant as well. You’ll be glowing both inside and out with this transformative and natural self-care ritual.

If you’ve decided you want to try oil pulling for yourself, check out our Pure Detox Oil Pulling Treatment—made with a carefully-crafted blend of refreshing and purifying peppermint, sesame, and coconut oils, it offers a potent entry point into the numerous benefits of oil pulling.

2

SELF-MASSAGE AND KANSA WAND

In addition to providing instant relaxation and tranquility, the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage offers major benefits for glowing skin and hair. Massaging essential oils into the hair stimulates growth and dilutes blood vessels, promoting the growth of fuller, more luminous and radiant hair. When applied to the skin, self-massage imbues it with deep moisture and circulation, promoting natural radiance and glow.

One valuable tool that promotes radiance through the process of self-massage is the Kansa wand. A handheld wooden tool whose rounded tip is made of copper and tin—ingredients known for their purifying and detoxifying properties—the Kansa wand is massaged into the marma points of the face and body to improve circulation, flush out impurities, boost radiance, and more. Studies also support the notion that facial massages improve circulation and promote a healthy, youthful complexion.

Here is a guide on how to use the Kansa wand. We recommend trying out our UMA Kansa Wand for the ultimate experience of rejuvenation.

DIET

A diet rich in antioxidants is crucial for achieving and maintaining youthful, glowing skin. Through these antioxidants, the body can neutralize oxidative stress, which in turn counters the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and dullness. Cutting down on sugar intake and eating antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and nuts are fantastic and all-natural ways to boost a taut and radiant complexion. Especially potent are ingredients like carrots, tomatoes, apples, Indian gooseberries, and spinach.

4

EXFOLIATION AND HYDRATION

While the skin works on its own to remove dead skin cells, sometimes a buildup of these cells can lead to a dull, ashen complexion. A healthy amount of exfoliation can help to remove these built-up cells, leaving the skin looking immediately more radiant and revitalized. When applied once or twice a week, masks like our Deeply Clarifying Face Mask provide long-lasting circulation and glow; however, it’s important not to over-exfoliate the skin, as the skin barrier can become damaged that way.

Furthermore, it’s important to find a moisturizer that provides deep hydration without irritating the skin or leaving it feeling oily and heavy. Our Ultimate Brightening Face Oil strikes a balance between indulgence and lightness—formulated with antioxidant-rich orange and neroli and luxurious, brightening frankincense and rose, it delivers rich hydration for a luminous, youthful complexion.

INGREDIENT SUPERSTARS FOR LUMINOUS SKIN

In Ayurveda, there is a group of herbs called Varnya that is known to promote radiance and brightness, which are key qualities for the appearance of youthfulness. These herbs provide nutrients that improve skin health and balance the Pitta dosha, which provides color to the upper layer of our skin. Here are a few Varnya herbs that tone, brighten, and nourish the skin:

  • Sandalwood
  • Vetiver
  • Indian madder
  • Indian sarsaparilla
  • Licorice
  • Tung

Whether it be through changing your diet, trying out oil pulling and self-massage, or seeking products that contain Varnya herbs, there are a number of ways to combat skin dullness and to achieve youthful, glowing skin. Try out one (or all) of these techniques to make both your complexion and your spirits radiant.

DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF NATURAL DIY FACE MASKS

The feeling of putting on a face mask after a long day is one of pure relief, relaxation and self-love. Add a long, soothing bath and a good book to the mix and you have a perfect recipe for an indulgent self-care night.

Applying face masks is about more than feeling relaxed at the end of a long day, though. Our skin is our first line of defense against the external elements, including UV damage, pollution, toxins, and other environmental impurities. It serves as a crucial barrier between our internal organs and the outside world. With such an important role to play, the skin is an organ that requires cleansing and care in order to flush out accumulated toxins and mitigate free radical damage.

Even a once-a-week application of a natural face mask can work wonders to draw out impurities and toxins from the skin, leaving it healthier and better-equipped to face the external world. In addition, face masks provide deep hydration, exfoliation and nutrition, leaving the skin looking bright, glowing, hydrated and tightened. What more could you ask for? KEEP KAPHA IN CHECK FOR A BEAUTIFUL WINTER: AYURVEDIC TIPS

In order to remain in balance and maintain optimal health, wellness and beauty, it is essential to adapt to the present season by making complementary lifestyle,  dietary and ritual shifts. This practice of living seasonally, deemed Ritucharya in Ayurveda, will help you obtain a balance of the doshas and thrive – in every season. For Kapha in particular, the key is to keep the body warm, nourished, and hydrated. Since Kapha season also marks a slowdown and a bit of stagnation – it is also important to detox regularly and prevent a feeling of buildup in the skin, body and scalp.

Discover more about what is Kapha Dosha ahead in our blog.

Kapha dosha characteristics are representative of earth and water. Kapha skin tends to be thick, oily, cool and pale. It is prone to oiliness because of its thick, smooth nature. Toxins accumulate under the skin and eventually force their way out, resulting in irritation and eruptions, which can be indicative of kapha imbalance. While this underscores the need for regular exfoliation – it is also important to note that rituals shouldn’t be vata-aggravating as this will lead to dryness, fragility and wear on skin and hair. So the key is to approach your skincare and hair rituals, and kapha dosha diet with gentle ingredients and a sense of moderation to maintain balance and prevent kapha imbalance.

Check out the following remedies for balancing Kapha during winters:-

Cleansing, Exfoliation & Masking

Ayurveda recommends a combination of nut powders, flours, clays, honey, sea salts and occasional steaming to keep the skin thoroughly cleansed – but never stripped.

Some of our favorite powders and flours for cleansing include chickpea flour, oat flour, orange peel powder, almond flour, and a touch of walnut powder (strictly a “touch” as this can be a strong physical exfoliant). Combine them with water or rosewater or honey and use twice a day in winter season for a beautiful cleansing ritual.

Try this for an at home facial: gently scrub the face with a mixture of sea salt and honey, then steam it with a combination of water and mint leaves. Massage the face with a solution of aloevera and turmeric paste, then apply a mask consisting of clay (kaolene preferably), honey and rose water. Some of our favorite DIY exfoliating and masking recipes are here and here. We also love the UMA Ultimate Brightening Cleanser for normal skin types and UMA Deeply Clarifying Cleanser for oilier, more acne-prone skin. Trying to pick from one of our bestselling masks? Find your match here.

Toning

Steaming your skin occasionally with mint leaves and a dash of lemon will leave your pores clear and feeling small (pores don’t grow or shrink, debris or oil congestion can make them appear bigger than they are). After steaming use a cube of ice all over the face for instant calm and glow. Try cucumber water or rose water as a DIY toner. You can also pick from UMA Ultimate Brightening Rose Toner for more acne-prone skin.

Moisturizing and Nourishing

We love non-comedogenic oils for the winter so you can keep your skin hydrated and nourished, but clear of build-up. Jojoba can mimic the skin’s natural oil texture and can trick your skin into not overproducing oil (if you’re experiencing that) and is a great ally for keeping skin moisturized. Grapeseed oil, with copious quantities of linoleic acid, actually breaks down “stickiness” in sebum to allow skin and pores to remain clear. If you’re struggling with clogged pores or blemishes, adding grapeseed to skincare will help! From the UMA line up, we simply adore Deeply Clarifying Face Oil for balancing blemish-prone skin and Deeply Clarifying Spot Treatment for banishing that occasional eruption. You’ll also love Total Rejuvenation Face Oil for a deep dose of repair and pore cleansing action, working overtime as you rest!

Detox and Hydrate Body & Hair

Ayurvedic tradition suggests practicing the dry brushing technique, known as Garshana, during Kapha season as one of the effective home remedies for detox. This helps to rid the body of ama (undigested toxins) and increase lymphatic flow. Using silk gloves or a gentle natural bristle body brush, gently massage the body in circular strokes, starting at the shoulders and neck and working downward.

During Kapha season the skin requires additional massage and moisture. From the décolleté down, work UMA’s Absolute Anti Aging Body Oil into the skin. The blend of sandalwood, rose, and neroli will deeply soothe and lock in moisture. Follow with UMA’s Flawlessly Firming Neck, Chest, and Décolletage Serum for the neck and chest, and lastly add a lustrous glow to the complexion with a face oil, continuing to massage upward.

Both Vata and Kapha seasons can cause hair to become dry and dull. Experiencing buildup in the scalp? Try rubbing lemon juice on the scalp just peior to washing your hair. 3-4 uses will completely clear the scalp. (Please skip if you have psoriasis or aggravated skin/ open wounds on the scalp). Keep strands nourished with UMA’s Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil with hydrating moringa and grape seed oils. Looking for some DIY hair care tips and ingredients for winter skincare? THE UMA OIL FILES: THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR FINE LINES & WRINKLES

While aging is inevitable, your skin is not necessarily obliged to show it! Our skin has two layers – the inner layer is the epidermis and the dermis is the outer layer, which is primarily made up of collagen and other proteins. Collagen is vital to maintaining the skin’s appearance of elasticity and smoothness; however, different factors contribute to the reduction of collagen production in the skin. Some of these factors include air pollution, toxins, dehydration, unhealthy diets and sun damage. Many of us try to counter this damage (and rightly so) through a shift towards a healthier, more holistic lifestyle. We sometimes may, however, overlook the fact that many of our skincare products may actually be the source of those damaging toxins, and that switching to all-natural and organic skincare products can create the ultimate impact towards achieving that youthful glow.

As a quick reminder – essential oils are concentrated oils, extracted from plants, which contain highly aromatic properties. These oils have long been some of the primary ingredients in much of anti aging skincare as the topical and olfactory use of a variety of essential oils has been found to help treat and prevent signs of aging. Here are some of the best essential oils for helping improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

ROSE ESSENTIAL OIL

Arguably, the best essential oil for maturing skin is the gorgeous, precious rose essential oil. Extremely active in promoting and retaining skin’s natural moisture, it is very effective in delivering moisture to maturing skin, which can often tend towards dryness. Additionally, rose oil lacks the pesky, pore-clogging buildup that results from synthetic creams. As a consequence, your skin looks naturally plumped, hydrated and radiant. Also, unparalleled astringent action of rose oil is excellent at reducing any signs of redness or skin sensitivity, so you can bare your skin like never before!

For the anti-aging, rejuvenating effects of rose essential oil, UMA recommends:

SANDALWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

This oil has unparalleled toning properties, which perfectly enable it to combat wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead, or around the eyes. The proven results of sandalwood essential oil also stem from its ability to reduce inflammation and hyperpigmentation, thereby providing a youthful glow to the skin.

For the nourishing, brightening, and smoothing benefits of sandalwood essential oil, UMA recommends:

NEROLI ESSENTIAL OIL

Citrus oils can help with the absorption of Vitamin C into your skin, and that is how this oil helps repair and brighten the skin to create a luminous skin tone. Neroli essential oil adds elasticity to the skin, and also reduces the depth of wrinkles and improves the appearance of any scarring on the surface of the dermis.

To reduce scarring and add elasticity using neroli essential oil, UMA recommends:

GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

As a natural astringent, geranium essential oil promotes the appearance of pores to give the skin a smoother surface and appearance. This anti aging oil also enhances natural skin turnover and helps develop the appearance of overall healthy skin by boosting the health of existing cells.

To use geranium essential oil to promote healthy, smooth skin in your lips and eyes, UMA recommends:

FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL

This oil is known for its deeply soothing properties, along with antiseptic and disinfectant qualities that help resurface the skin and minimize any imperfections on the skin. The olfactory benefits of frankincense essential oil include the reduction of stress and anger, and the balancing of the body and mind.

To reduce skin imperfections and stress with frankincense essential oil, UMA recommends:

CLARY SAGE ESSENTIAL OIL

A natural skin-balancer, clary sage essential oil works to promote and control the production of sebum on the skin. This essential oil allows the dermis to obtain the healthiest oil balance from within by obtaining the optimal PH level of the skin. Aromatherapeutic factors include mood lifting abilities as well as aiding to alleviate anxiety.

To reduce oiliness and lift your mood with clary sage essential oil, UMA recommends:

CARROT SEED ESSENTIAL OIL

Packed full of essential nutrients, carrot seed essential oil rejuvenates the skin and stimulates skin. It fights off free radicals, helps clean out your pores and also improves the tone of your skin – ultimately helping to achieve an overall glowing appearance.

For the smoothing, glowing effects of carrot seed essential oil, UMA recommends:

INTEGRATING ESSENTIAL OILS INTO YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

The use of essential oils has proven to be pivotal in the prevention of wrinkles, and there are a variety of ways that you can integrate these oils into your daily regimen.

Yes, face oils are all the rage right now, so you might want to get yourself a bottle of these ultimate skin saviors. But don’t forget, you can also try making your face oil at home! Select organic, ethically sourced essential oils and combine your favorites into a 5-10% essential oil – 90-95% carrier oil ratio. As you likely know, essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil for safe and efficacious application. Don’t know which carrier oil to pick? Our favorite is pomegranate! Pomegranate oil – so powerful as base, and so rich in Vitamins A, K, D, E and antioxidants – that it might as well be an active – is an excellent choice for a carrier oil because of its rapid absorption quotient. Organic pomegranate oil feels and absorbs like a serum, but does everything wonderful (and more!) that a great oil would do.

Another great carrier oil option, especially for blemish-prone skin is grapeseed oil. This oil is a wonderful – if slightly counterintuitive – choice for those of us with oily and/or acne-prone skin, as it actually controls skin’s natural oil producing functions and has excellent anti-inflammatory properties (great for soothing skin that’s already breaking out). It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, and is also an especially effective way to minimize dark circles under the eyes, when applied daily for a few weeks.

If you’re not quite ready for face oils or to replace your daily moisturizer, you can try adding a few drops of sandalwood, neroli or frankincense essential oil to your moisturizer before mixing and applying. You also have the option of applying any of the moisturizing oils directly as eye serum (after appropriately diluting in a carrier) or including them into your facial wash.

Q

1. What are the origins of Vaastu?

A

Vastu Shastra, also known as the science of architecture and design, originated in ancient India. Its roots can be traced back to the Vedic period, which dates back thousands of years. The knowledge and principles of Vastu Shastra are believed to have been derived from the ancient texts known as the Vedas. Rigveda and Atharvaveda, contain references to the planning and construction of sacred spaces such as temples and altars. The early development of Vastu Shastra can also be attributed to the contributions of ancient sages and scholars.  Vishwakarma Prakash and Brihat Samta are two such ancient texts which provide detailed principles and guidelines for architectural design, town planning, and construction.

Q

2. Can you give us a brief overview of the scope of Vaastu as a science, like its central practices, purposes, and goals?

A

What we see, think and feel in an environment has a large impact on us and the way we live our day-to-day life. The scope of Vastu Shastra extends beyond mere architectural guidelines and touches upon the holistic well-being of individuals within their living and working spaces. It considers factors such as the position of the sun, moon, and other planets, as well as the magnetic field of the Earth

Science tells us that morning sunlight helps regulate our circadian rhythm and stimulates the production of serotonin, a hormone that promotes a positive mood. It also provides vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and supports the immune system. Hence Vastu Shastra says to keep the east open at home or a workspace as sunlight in the morning coming into your space has several beneficial effects on our bodies and overall well-being.

If we deep dive into anything mentioned in The Vedas, we will realise that everything has a deep meaning and a scientific explanation to it.

Vastu Shastra recognizes the significance of the five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and space – and their presence and balance in a building. The proper integration of these elements is believed to enhance positive energies and well-being. Vastu focuses on the flow of energy within a space. The purpose of Vastu Shastra is to achieve the free movement of positive energy and aims to minimize obstructions or negative influences that may hinder the energy flow.

The primary goal of Vastu Shastra is to create living and working environments that promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It seeks to enhance the quality of life, promote prosperity, and foster a harmonious connection between individuals and their surroundings

Q

3. What is the most profound thing about Vaastu to you? What are some of the areas you’ve seen it have the most impact?  Where does Vaastu “shine” in your opinion?

A

The most profound thing about Vaastu is that it transcends individual belief and one can deliver accurate readings about the experiences, challenges and areas of success from studying the energy zones of the home or office. If I can tell you what problems you would be facing in life by studying the layout and interiors of your house, then one would have to submit themselves to the workings of this energy science.

Through my study, I have been most astonished by the fact that one could explain the mindset and modus operandi of a city by looking at its layout. For example… People in linear cities like New York, London & Mumbai, may have a mindset that aligns with the fast-paced urban lifestyle, focusing on individual goals, and embracing modernity and technological advancements. People in circular cities like Rome or Paris, have a mindset that appreciates a sense of community, connectivity, and a more relaxed pace of life.

However, Vastu Shastra primarily focuses on creating harmony and balance in living spaces, regardless of the city’s layout or the mindset of its residents. So it’s fascinating, how you can use Vastu principles to make a change in your home or office environment for the results you are looking for, in order to fulfil your goals.

In terms of impact, people derive results in whichever aspect they invest their attention, do all the remedies and even work on themselves. Vaastu remedies are a phenomenal support to one’s life but we must also acknowledge the need for personal transformation in tandem with external remedies. Some of the most common life fixes people look for are, relationships, liquidity, new opportunities and health.

Q

4. How do you work with people during a Vaastu consultations

A

I have an initial discussion with the client to understand their needs, goals, and specific concerns related to their living or working space. This may include discussions about the layout, orientation, and existing issues they are facing.

I visit the client’s site or analyse only the floor plan (if a visit is not possible). I get the compass reading at the site myself or from the client. This allows me to assess the physical aspects of the space, such as its direction, layout, entrances, and room placements.

Based on my assessment, I provide recommendations and solutions to improve the Vaastu aspects of the space without making any structural changes. These include the use of different colours, Metals and 3d objects to be placed around the space. The remedies are done in 2 phases.

In Phase 1, we balance the 5 elements in the space.

Phase 2 is all about a specific goal the client wants to achieve. For example… A son or the daughter of the house is of age and is not finding a suitable match or the marriage is getting delayed for no known reason.

It could also be that someone has a business and they want to attract an international clientele. Then after one month of balancing, we do specific remedies for specific issues.

I also suggest getting Astro – Vastu to be done in certain cases, where the client is looking for very specific issues to be solved. This includes the sharing of their astrological charts with me so we can give remedies specific to them depending on their planetary positions.

Q

5. What has been your (own) most positive experience with Vaastu? What has been the most positive experience you’ve had with a consultation or a client?

A

Vaastu did what I can only describe as magic for me. I ran and owned one of the best Patisseries in Pune, Maharashtra. I wanted to sell my business and move on to a spiritual path. I had been struggling to sell it for almost 2 years even though it had become a well-known brand in the city. I always knew about Vaastu but wasn’t a professional at that time. So I got a full Vaastu study done from an expert and did all the balancing required for the free flow of the energy. Within a few months I not only had 4-5 buyers in line but also sold my business at my intended valuation. That’s when I decided that I wanted to learn this more deeply and help others achieve their dream life by uplifting their spatial energies.

One of my most positive experiences in Vastu was with a client who was neck-deep in debt. He didn’t have enough work coming in even though he was excellent at his job. People would mostly get their work done free from him. When I did a full study of the energies of the house, I realised a few imbalances and some of them especially related to debt creation. We balanced them all and within 8 months he was totally debt free and now has more work than he can handle.

Q

6. How soon can one expect results in one’s life after making Vaastu-related changes?

A

The extent of the Vastu imbalance in your living or working space can influence the time it takes to see results. If the Vaastu issues are significant, it may take longer to experience noticeable changes.

The type of Vastu changes you make can also impact the timeframe for results. Some changes, such as rearranging furniture or adding specific elements, may bring quicker results compared to more significant modifications like the use of  metal for balancing

All in all the changes start showing in 21 days or a month and show more strongly as time passes by. You see good results within 3 months

Your own mindset, intention, and effort in aligning with positive energies can influence the speed of results.

Q

7. Some people dismiss Vaastu as junk science. What do you have to say to the sceptics about the value it can add to one’s life?

A

To a sceptic, I would say: “While scepticism is understandable, it’s worth considering that Vastu Shastra has a rich history and has provided benefits to many individuals over time. Exploring and experimenting with Vaastu principles in your own living or working space can be an opportunity to witness first-hand the potential positive effects it can have on your environment and well-being. Keep an open mind, observe the changes, and draw your conclusions based on your own experiences.”

Skeptics are the best clients to have. If they try Vaastu and see the benefit in what they achieve out of it, they become your best testimonial client!

Q

8. Can you share with us some starting tips to enhance life using Vaastu?

A

  • For improved success at work: Keep your working desk free from clutter and make sure you face East or North when you sit
  • For enhanced prosperity and alleviation of financial troubles: Make sure the North direction of your house is well balanced. North is governed by the water element which represents your career and new opportunities in life. Make sure there is no fire element in this space. A water fountain placed here makes sure that there is a flow of opportunities in your life in terms of career and money.
  • For better romantic relationships, and attracting love in your life :
For a better romantic relationship, a couple can hang their picture in the North or Northwest of the home. This increases the attraction between them.To attract love in your life, you can keep a picture or a figurines of a pair of Swans in the South West direction of the home. This will help in attracting the perfect love in your life.
  • For improved relationships with others – such as friends, family members, a child? : Family pictures on the wall in the South West create a bonding between family. Happy pictures of the family and friends can be hung in the North West, this makes sure they always support each other in life.

Q

9. There are many starting guidelines for Vaastu (placement of plants, types of plants, mirrors and so forth), what are your top 3-5 tips that work for everyone? What are some of the reasons behind these choices?

A

Here are a few guidelines and common tips that everyone can benefit from :

  •  Bramhasthan: (centre of the house)This is the centre point of any space where the energy originates from and spreads all over the living space. Keep the centre of the house empty and light. This ensures a positive energy flow in the house all over.
  • North: Place a water element like a fountain in the North direction of the house. This ensures flow of prosperity in the house. This is a good place to put a mirror.
  • East: Make sure the east is open and has a lot of tall plants. This ensures a good connection with the outside world and makes sure you have good social associations in life.
  • South: This direction is governed by fire. Make sure it’s clear of any water elements. Southeast is the ideal place for a kitchen. If you don’t have a kitchen here, make sure you light a candle or a diya here for at least a couple of hours a day, to balance the fire element.
  • North East: Make sure that the North East direction of the house is clean as this represents clarity of mind. This is the ideal place for placing an altar with all the Gods that you worship.

5 AYURVEDIC HERBS THAT POWERFULLY COMBAT HAIR LOSS

Whether we’re experiencing lots of stress or going through the natural processes of aging, hair loss is something that can happen at any point in our lives. And when it does, we might scratch our heads (both literally and figuratively) wondering how to remedy it.

The first step is to identify why hair loss might be happening. It occurs for a wide number of reasons. Sometimes it’s the result of a genetic predisposition, or conditions like alopecia and anemia. Other times, it can occur post-pregnancy due to a drop in estrogen levels and an increase in cortisol levels, or during the hormonal fluctuations of menopause. As research has shown, diets lacking in essential vitamins, proteins and minerals also impact hair strength and regrowth. In addition, sometimes hair loss—whether minute or significant—can occur simply as a result of stress. As dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler tells Goop, “Hair follicles are sensitive to both physical and emotional stressors.”

It’s important to identify the root cause of hair loss and respond accordingly, whether that’s by improving your dietlearning how to ease the transition into menopause or alleviating stress. In addition, there are a number of Ayurvedic herbs that can help speed up the process of regrowth, promoting the circulation of nutrients, stimulating hair follicles and strengthening the hair. Here are 5 of these herbs—when incorporated into your hair care routine, they can help bring thickness, radiance and health to thinning hair.

ALOE VERA

While many know aloe vera as an effective wound healer, its multitude of anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant properties make it a rejuvenating salve for the hair. Cooling and detoxifying, aloe vera can combat scalp inflammation and effectively treat and prevent dandruff. It also rejuvenates dry scalps thanks to its deeply hydrating effects; as dermatologist Marisa Garshick, M.D, tells mindbodygreen, “The leaf of the aloe vera plant is rich in water, particularly in the innermost layer, so it helps to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture.”

To cleanse, cool down and hydrate your scalp with aloe vera, simply apply fresh aloe vera gel all over the scalp. Rinse off after 15 minutes.

Aloe for acne

HIBISCUS

Like aloe vera, hibiscus is cooling and cleansing, which enables it to combat inflammation. Rich in Vitamin C, it has long been used as a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss. Rubbing hibiscus into the scalp stimulates hair follicles and boosts the circulation of blood and nutrients into the hair, all of which helps promote the growth of strong, healthy hair.

To promote natural hair growth with this Ayurvedic solution, grind hibiscus flowers and leaves into a thick paste. Apply generously to the scalp and wash off with water. You can apply this paste several times a week to stimulate growth.

TRIPHALA

An ancient polyherbal blend made up of bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki, the benefits of triphala seem endless. Not only is it used in Ayurveda to strengthen the liver, digestion and immunity—its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties enable it to provide potent nourishment to the scalp, cleansing it of impurities and strengthening hair at its roots.

To use triphala as a hair supplement, you can mix water and triphala powder to form a thin paste. Massage into the scalp before rinsing off with water.

FENUGREEK

Rich in essential vitamins, iron and calcium, and full of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek is another powerful tool for promoting scalp health and combating hair loss. Its protein and amino acids allow it to treat hair damage and promote thicker hair growth, while its lecithin provides natural hydration and nourishment to the hair follicles. By combating inflammation and damage while also stimulating healthy circulation, fenugreek helps the hair grow back thicker and more radiant.

INDIAN GOOSEBERRY

As Samar Kullab tells Byrdie, Indian gooseberry is “probably one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods. It has 50 times more antioxidants than blueberries.” This extreme richness of antioxidants, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, is part of what makes Indian gooseberry (or amla) one of the most revered Ayurvedic herbs for the hair. Research has backed up this Ayurvedic wisdom, showing that Indian gooseberry can inhibit the growth of the 5α-reductase enzyme that leads to hair loss. Its antioxidants also help protect the hair from damage, breakage and loss that can occur from pollution, dust and certain styling methods. Furthermore, it is deeply hydrating, ultimately leaving the hair strengthened, thicker and more radiant.

amla

To reap the multitude of Indian gooseberry’s benefits, you can either apply it as a paste or look for it as an ingredient in specialty hair oils. Our own UMA Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil utilizes both Indian gooseberry and hibiscus to promote deep nutrition, hydration and regrowth.

UMA’S ULTIMATE AYURVEDA KIT: MY FIRST STEP INTO AYURVEDIC SELF-CARE

Before I joined the UMA team, I didn’t know much about the practices and philosophy of Ayurveda, the ancient system of natural medicine that originated in India over 5000 years ago. But I had long believed in some of its central tenets, including a holistic approach to health and a vision of wellness in which the mind and body are intimately connected. I had also tried out a few of its practices before, like tongue scraping, self-massaging, and natural face masks. All-in-all, though, I had been an Ayurveda novice.

As my first deep dive into Ayurvedic practices—and the wellness and beauty products that go with them—I tried out the UMA Ultimate Ayurveda Kit. When I first started using these products, I had just arrived in South Korea, where I would spend the next two weeks in quarantine. It felt like the perfect time to focus on self-reflection and my emotional and physical wellness—and it was. Using UMA’s Ultimate Ayurveda Kit was like an extended practice of self-care through which I could engage with beauty, wellness, and emotional health—often all at the same time.

ayurveda

Given that I would be traveling with the Kit’s contents, I received a slightly altered version, with travel-sized bottles and compact packaging, and without the supplements. But most of the basic contents remain the same: they include a combination of wellness and beauty oils (including face, eye, and body oils), circulation and oral hygiene tools, and face masks.

For those who are similarly new to Ayurveda, the Ultimate Ayurveda Kit is a great way to get introduced to some of its techniques. And for those who are already familiar with this time-tested system of ayurvedic medicine, these products can certainly empower you to continue your practice with ease. Here are some of the products I tried and the practices I found most useful throughout my quarantine—and that will continue to stay with me beyond.

MY POST-FLIGHT SELF-CARE TREATMENT

It has always been difficult to maintain skincare or other daily routines on a long flight, given the cramped surroundings, dehydrating cabin conditions, and an air quality that can stimulate unwanted oil production. And in the age of COVID-19, when visits to the bathroom are minimized and masks are only removed when absolutely necessary, that maintenance becomes nearly impossible. So I was left to recuperate from my thirteen-hour flight after I had arrived and settled into my quarantine situation. To my pleasure and surprise, I found all the products I might need to rehydrate and refresh in the Ayurveda Kit.

First, I used the UMA Kansa Wand—alongside some much needed stretches—to restore a sense of balance after the disorienting process of international travel. The Kansa Wand taps into several vital energy points around the face to ease tension and reduce inflammation. By running the wand along points around my neck and chest, I felt a level of concentration that allowed me to relax and center myself.

Then I used the Ultimate Brightening Face Mask to revitalize my skin, which tends to become dried out on flights. The mask was thick, creamy, and smooth to apply, and ingredients like sandalwood and saffron renew and even out complexion. It did react slightly harshly with the parts of my face that can get inflamed during travel, so for those with more sensitive skin, I’d recommend applying with a light hand. However, upon removal it left my skin feeling smoother and more elastic—in other words, it brought back a level of tightness and skin rejuvenation that had faded throughout the flight.

Since I have combination skin, certain areas of my skin also become especially oily on the plane, usually resulting in a couple of blemishes—which are mightily unwelcome guests on any trip. I applied the Deeply Clarifying Blemish Spot Treatment as necessary. Out of everything I tried, this ayurvedic treatment was one of the most mind-altering ones for me, because blemishes that usually have an annoyingly long lifespan significantly reduced in size and redness within a matter of days. Since I tend to break out in the oiliest parts of my skin, I never thought that applying oil to my skin could be a viable solution, and I was amazed by the results of this mixture of tea tree, juniper berry, and clary sage essential oils.

Lastly, I massaged the Pure Rest Wellness Oil into my feet, wrists, neck, and temples in order to promote restful sleep against jet lag. While I had felt ready to pass out without much thought, using the herbaceous-scented oil helped me become relaxed by its aroma and alert and in-tune with my body. My sleep evolved from being something automatic and necessary to something luxurious and intentional.

SIMPLE AYURVEDIC RITUALS FOR EVERYDAY REJUVENATION

As I settled into quarantine, I carried out a number of daily Ayurvedic practices that were so simple they became seamlessly incorporated into my morning routine. After waking up, I used a teaspoon of the Pure Detox Oil Pulling TreatmentOil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in the mouth for 10-20 minutes, which pulls out toxins and impurities from the mouth in order to promote balance and better oral hygiene. The first time I tried oil pulling, the sensation and taste of having oil in my mouth was a bit jarring, and I also felt a bit of nausea, which is actually a normal indication that the detox process is effective. My body soon got accustomed to the practice, though, and I usually oil pulled while I took a shower with no problems. While I hadn’t heard of this practice before, it made a visceral difference in my oral hygiene—as I oil pulled, I felt my mouth becoming fresher as toxins became concentrated in the oil (which is why it’s important to spit it out after!).

After oil pulling, I brushed my teeth and used the Pure Palate Tongue Scraper to continue the process of detoxification by further removing the impurities that had accumulated overnight. While I have tongue scraped before, the sturdy copper of UMA’s tongue scraper felt like a more powerful and effective tool. Together, these practices left my mouth feeling noticeably fresher all throughout the day. I’ll definitely continue carrying them out as part of my daily routine.

After getting ready in the morning, I used the Kansa Wand and Lymphatic Detox Dry Brush as a sort of grounding ritual, allowing me to bring my focus to the physical sensations of my body before embarking on the tasks of the day. Through this morning routine, I was always left feeling grounded and energized—both physically and mentally—for the day to come.

FORAYING INTO A LUXURIOUS BEAUTY REGIMEN

I’ve never been someone who follows a rigorous or thorough beauty routine. Instead, I usually opt for a simple cleanser and lotion before applying light foundation, occasional eyeliner, and mascara—in short, nothing extravagant. Part of the reason for that was that I didn’t know much about luxury beauty or face oils to begin with, so getting to experience UMA’s Absolute Anti Aging Face Oil and Absolute Anti Aging Eye Oil was a luxurious treat. Applying both as the last step in my skincare regimen, alongside the Deeply Clarifying Blemish Spot Treatment, I targeted the areas of my face that tend to get dry, like my cheeks, the sides of my nose, and around my eyes. Both oils incorporated smoothly into the skin pretty seamlessly, leaving it with a healthy shine without looking like I had layered anything onto my face. And they definitely kept the drier parts of my face moisturized throughout the day—no re-application necessary. While their moisture was amplified by the humidity of Korea, these oils will be great for when I return to the drier climate of California.

TREATING MYSELF A LITTLE EXTRA, BECAUSE IT’S QUARANTINE

In addition to these new additions to my oral hygiene and skincare routines, I also took moments here and there to treat myself to things like face masks and self-massages. Using the Absolute Anti Aging Body Oil, I massaged areas of my body that tended to be particularly stiff, and using the Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil I massaged the ends of my hair and my scalp. Both oils were luxurious, rich, and hydrating, and the act of massaging and caring for various parts of my body calmed my mind and nerves. I went to sleep after applying the oils and woke up with my body still feeling richly moisturized. My hair, which struggles with dryness and brittleness at the ends, felt noticeably softer.

I also took one evening to try out the Deeply Clarifying Face Mask, which was a luxurious experience. Scented by sweet citrus and herbal tones, this mask was light and creamy, and it firmed up without feeling too stiff or heavy. When I washed it off, my skin immediately felt lifted and energized. It was also extremely soft and smooth—probably the softest a face mask has ever left my skin. What’s more, the next morning my complexion was visibly clearer and rosier. I would definitely use this face mask any time I have impurities or irritation—or any time at all, to be honest.

CLOSING REFLECTIONS: FOR ME, AYURVEDA IS HERE TO STAY

While routine actions like cleansing your face or brushing your teeth can oftentimes feel perfunctory or automatic, the Ultimate Ayurveda Kit encouraged me to approach my own wellness with mindfulness and care. Thanks to the luxuriousness and beauty of these products, I looked forward to each daily practice of self-care, whether it be oil pulling or self-massaging. And in addition to their luxury, I was wowed by their near-immediate effectiveness: especially with regard to the wellness oils, face masks, and spot treatment, I was surprised and excited to see noticeable results. I especially enjoyed using different wellness oils each night, which instantly boosted my mood, relaxed my muscles, and helped me settle down mentally into sleep.

Wellness oils and my nightly reading

Not only did the Ultimate Ayurveda Kit help me improve my skincare, oral health, and other elements of physical wellbeing, but it also improved my general mental and emotional wellbeing. As is a central Ayurvedic belief, the imbalances of the body impact the condition of the mind. By taking care of my body in a conscientious and mindful manner, I could also relax, combat stress, and center myself in the present. I could approach each day in quarantine feeling renewed, grounded, and focused.

Perhaps most importantly, the incorporation of these Ayurvedic practices allowed me to view self-care as not just an occasional treat, but as something that can make a lasting impact on one’s life through consistent application. And while that self-care is certainly aided by products like wellness oils and balms, many of these practices are accessible to anyone with the patience and willingness to try them out—whether it be through UMA’s $10 Pure Palate Tongue Scraper or through simple DIY face masks.

Ayurveda and comfort

Overall, after using the Ultimate Ayurveda Kit, I learned to love and appreciate the practices of Ayurveda—many of which I will continue practicing as a way to ground, refresh, and revitalize myself every day.

HOW FACE TONERS CAN REVAMP YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

A couple of weeks ago, we broke down the benefits of serum and how it helps the skin absorb essential nutrients to provide targeted results. But even before applying serum, there’s another skincare essential that preps the skin for a glowing, healthy complexion: toner.

When applied before a serum or moisturizer, a toner can go a long way toward helping the skin look even and radiant while also prepping the skin to better absorb the other elements of your routine. But while it’s a word that’s thrown around in the beauty world a lot, you might find yourself unsure of what it actually is. Does it dry skin out or hydrate it? Can I use it even if I have sensitive skin? Here, we break down the purpose and benefits of toner, and guidance on how to incorporate it into your routine.

What Is Toner?

In short, toner has the density and texture of water, allowing it to provide the skin with instant hydration. But it’s more than just water, of course—toners contain a number of additional targeted ingredients that, depending on your desired result, can have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and brightening effects. While in the past toners were rough and drying, utilizing alcohol to remove oil from the skin, today’s toners are designed to gently nourish, hydrate and rejuvenate all skin types.

In addition to hydrating the skin, toners help slough off dead skin cells, bacteria and other impurities, leaving the skin prepped for a more effective, thorough absorption of other products.

“Your skin is like a dried-up sponge. If you put a thick cream on a brittle dry sponge, it won’t accept it and it isn’t ‘prepped’ for moisture. But if you wet the sponge, the cream will sink in more easily.”

Soko Glam co-founder and esthetician Charlotte Cho tells Allure.

Overall, toners help to remove impurities and restore nourishment and moisture to the skin after cleansing, which in turn helps to prime the skin for the rest of your routine. This simple step can ultimately make a big difference in promoting a healthy, hydrated glow.

What Are The Benefits Of Toner?

Gentle and nourishing, different toners are targeted toward different needs. However, their fundamental properties mean that they share the following benefits:

  • They Restore The Skin’s Ph Levels

After cleansing and/or exfoliating, the skin loses some of its natural oils and acidity, causing its pH levels to fluctuate. Toners help restore the skin’s acidic balance, replenishing and refreshing the skin with nutrients.

  • They Remove Impurities

While providing nutrients and hydration to the skin, toners also remove dead skin cells, bacteria, dirt and other impurities that may still linger on the skin after cleansing.

  • They Prime The Skin For Other Products

Like serums, toners also help the skin absorb other products more deeply and effectively, making them great primers for the rest of your routine.

In addition to these benefits, you can choose toners that combat acne and inflammation; promote tightness, evenness and other anti-aging effects; brighten the skin for a natural glow and more.

How Can I Incorporate Toner Into My Routine?

You should apply toner after cleansing/exfoliating and before other serums, oils and moisturizers. If you haven’t used a toner before, start out by applying it once every few days or once every other day, and if it seems beneficial to your skin you can bump it up to once a day. If the toner is gentle and targeted at hydrating and soothing, you can use it twice a day. To apply, you can spray some into your hands or onto a cotton pad and rub gently into the skin in circular motions.

As mentioned before, different toner formulations target different skin types and conditions. At UMA, we have three hydrating, detoxifying toners designed to cover a variety of needs.

EXPERIENCE THE HEALING POWER OF PANCHAKARMA AT HOME: A COMPLETE BLUEPRINT

HOW TO DETOX AT HOME: THE AYURVEDIC CLEANSE THAT HELPS YOU STAY BALANCED?

Panchakarma—or the Ayurvedic practice of physical, mental, and spiritual detoxification—is a form of self-care that has existed long before detoxes and cleanses became modern trends. Typically involving a five-step process overseen by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner, Panchakarma can last anywhere from several days to three weeks. During that time, a series of ayurvedic treatments are carried out in order to eliminate toxins and promote balance.

Panchakarma

While this Ayurvedic cleansing process provides purifying benefits and rejuvenation to those who undergo it, a formal Panchakarma is not always readily accessible. But there is an alternative: an at-home detox. By implementing elements of formal Panchakarma into a regular practice, you can re-establish balance, enhance digestive health and eliminate toxins within the body—all on your own time.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU DETOX?

Before going into detail about the development of toxins and detox practices, there are a few things to note about at-home detoxing:

  1. At-home detox is not the same thing as a formal Panchakarma. While opinions vary, we believe that a formal Panchakarma should be carried out under the supervision of an Ayurvedic doctor. Such professional supervision can not only ensure that the process is done safely, but also that its fullest benefits can be reaped.
  2. An at-home detox involves self-love, compassion, and pampering—not only emotionally, but physically. To break down toxins fully so they can be released, Ayurvedics believe oils and massages are critical components to “ripening” the toxins that wedge themselves throughout one’s physiological systems. As a result, toxins loosen up, break down, and become excreted through the body’s natural channels.
  3. An at-home detox requires downtime to fully reap its benefits. One component of the detox process is a reduction in sugar intake, which can in turn lower your energy levels. You’ll want to take time to focus that energy on the effective elimination of toxins. Additionally, an Ayurvedic detox is a holistic process: a physical detox must be accompanied by a true emotional detox, which involves observing your stressors, feelings, and potentially-toxic habits before releasing the emotions that don’t serve you anymore. Emotional detoxing may also involve marinating in the discomfort of unresolved emotion, or even boredom, and you may choose to journal or read as a result—all of which requires time and commitment. As a general guideline, it is helpful to semi-seclude yourself during the duration of the detox to ensure your time is being spent effectively.
  4. An at-home detox needs to be followed-up with rejuvenation—or rasayana. This targeted nourishment of the body will help you restore the nutrients that you may have lacked before the detox. It also enhances the physical and mental benefits you’ll take away from your Ayurvedic detox to improve the quality of your everyday life.

HOW DO TOXINS DEVELOP IN YOUR SYSTEM?

Your body is built to be in balance and homeostasis—not only within itself, but also with the external environment. While most of us realize that incompatible foods can disturb this balance, all intake can make an impact—whether it be through sight, sound, or touch. Factors like excessively loud or persistently annoying sounds, very bright lights, or touching something far too hot can also create an unfavorable reaction within the body, which in turn creates toxins.

There are many toxin-creating substances that we’re familiar with, and that we all choose to enjoy from time to time (or more). However, eating the wrong foods together, even if they’re independently healthy, can also create toxins within the body—it all depends on the particular balance of elements within and without your body. Even changing seasons can alter the body’s balance. Additionally, bodily homeostasis does not just depend on physical disturbances; emotional upheavals can also upset this balance. Through these widely-ranging factors, toxins accumulate over time, leading to discomfort and even disease.

WHY IS AT HOME DETOXING IMPORTANT?

Given the variety of factors in our everyday lives that can disturb our mind and body’s balance, at-home detoxes are important for redressing these imbalances before they can instill lasting harm. By periodically eliminating toxins, an at-home detox can help restore balance to your body, improving physical and emotional health in the short term and longevity in the long term. While many may benefit from a formal Panchakarma at some point in their lives, periodic detoxes in combination with mindful eating, lifestyle and emotional habits between them can prevent the urgency of a Panchakarma altogether.

balance

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN AT-HOME DETOX?

  1. As noted earlier, a successful detox requires time, focus, and commitment. Plan for 2-3 days of downtime when you can minimize work, social obligations, and other distractions.
  2. There are several useful tools for carrying out the various practices of a detox, like oil pulling and tongue scraping. Consider acquiring a few tools that can help you reap the full benefits of these practices, like a tongue scraper.
  3. Review the dietary and herbal recommendations—listed below—and stock up your kitchen. While the list is not comprehensive, it includes many central Ayurvedic ingredients. While you may or may not have several of these ingredients in your own kitchen, you will want to acquire a high quality ghee, a few key Indian spices, and Triphala.

DAILY PRACTICES FOR AN AT-HOME PANCHAKARMA(AND BEYOND):

The body attempts to eliminate toxins every day. Ayurvedic practices can help you support the body’s natural detoxification processes. Even after your detox concludes, you can use these practices to make lasting improvements in your body’s balance:

Oil pulling

This ancient Ayurvedic practice is surprisingly simple to carry out—all you need to do is swish a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes, making sure the oil makes contact with all areas of the gums and cheeks. The effects of oil pulling extend from whitening the teeth to removing the toxins and impurities (ama) that contribute to conditions like gingivitis, cardiovascular issues, and diabetes. Our own oil pulling blend contains a base coconut and sesame oils alongside neem oil, clove oil, turmeric, and peppermint oil, which will freshen your breath and combat harmful bacteria all at once—making it the perfect introduction to the practice.

Tongue Scraping

The tongue harbors loads of impurities—food, dead cells, fungi, and ama, to name a few—that, when untreated, can lead to problems like acne, digestive issues, and fungal and yeast infections. Tongue scraping (or jihwa prakshalana) is an effective and easy way to expel these impurities: by scraping your tongue from back to front, rinsing, and repeating the process a few times, you’ve already done wonders for your oral hygiene. Our tongue scraper is made of pure copper for even greater impact, as copper contains antimicrobial and detoxification properties.

Dry Brushing

While our skin is so important for protecting us from the impurities of the outside world, it can also become an inflamed and painful site due to the build-up of dead skin follicles, toxins, oils, and dirt. Through the Ayurvedic practice of dry brushing, you can help your skin remove these impurities and help skin rejuvenation. By brushing your skin in caring strokes, you can promote circulation, exfoliation, and the healthy appearance of skin.

Avoid Intense Cardio (during the cleanse)

While cardio sessions may be a good way to let out steam and energize the body, during an at-home detox your energy should be focused on eliminating toxins through Ayurvedic practices. Stick with yoga and meditation, which will leave both your mind and body feeling refreshed and serene.

Abhyanga and Head Massages

Abhyanga, or self-massage, is an Ayurvedic practice of self-care that uses essential oils to address a variety of health problems and therapeutic needs. From pain relief to increased focus to digestive treatment, the right choice of essential oils massaged before a shower can effectively treat your specific needs. Additionally, self-massage doesn’t just apply to your body—you can also massage your head to promote luscious hair growth and improve mental function. Read our guide to self-massage to find out which oils are best for you.

Daily Showers

In Ayurveda, the adoption of small practices can make a big impact—and that includes showering. By taking a shower every day, you can improve not only your physical health, but your mental and spiritual sense of well-being. Taking a daily shower is a ritual that cleanses the body of impurities, improves circulation, and leaves you feeling relaxed—so why not do it every day?

Water and Lemon in the Morning (Warm)

Another daily practice that can positively impact the rest of your day is that of drinking warm water with lemon juice in the morning. Such a simple ritual allows you to flush out toxins, improve circulation, hydrate the body, and enter the day feeling refreshed. (If you’re of Pitta constitution, use more tepid or room-temperature water)

WHAT TO EAT DURING AN AT-HOME DETOX?

Before beginning your detox, you’ll want to stock up on these ingredients:

  • Triphala: A mix of three native Indian fruits—bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki—Triphala is a multi-purpose herbal remedy especially useful for promoting gentle, but complete elimination from the digestive tract.
  • Ghee or Castor oil: A teaspoon of Ghee or Castor oil can be taken at night to combat congestion.
  • Neem: Neem is an Ayurvedic herb that can help purify the blood and detox the immune system.
panchakarma diet

Here are a few general tips for eating simply during your at-home detox:

  • Kitchari, a dish made of rice and lentils, helps rekindle the agni and nourishes your body without weighing down your digestive system. We recommend a three-day diet of only fresh kitchari, if possible. Here are some of our favorite simple kitchari recipes.
  • If you’re looking to add variety to your diet, we recommend fresh yogurt or fruit, though they should ideally be eaten separately. Fruit with any type of sourness, when combined with dairy, interferes with effective digestion and nutrient assimilation, thus creating toxins.
  • We recommend sticking with a vegetarian diet during your detox.
  • Teas can be helpful—especially non-caffeinated teas, which will help you avoid overstimulation and promote rest. For example, you can create a beneficial “decoction” by boiling fresh ginger and basil together as a tea, or you can drink fennel tea or coriander tea.

All in all, an at-home detox is a simple and revitalizing way to restore balance to your mind, body, and spirit. Through these recommendations, you can harness several of the benefits of a formal Panchakarma without needing to leave your home. And what’s more—the practices and eating tips you will learn from an at-home detox can (and should) make a lasting impact your everyday life. By creating intentional and regular habits of physical and mental restoration, detoxing can transform from a special occasion to a constant state of rejuvenation.

MAKE YOUR SKIN RADIANT WITH 6 DIY AYURVEDIC FACE MASKS

We all need boosts; something that changes up our routine and, in turn, adds some extra vitality to the everyday. These boosts can come in endless forms—a wheatgrass shot in a smoothie, an afternoon siesta, a long weekend. For our skin, a boost can come in the form of a face mask—a tightening, hydrating, calming, make-your-complexion-glow face mask.

Our skin is constantly under attack from toxins, UV rays, and environmental impurities, which all take a toll on the complexion. While our daily skin care works to combat these damages, using an occasional face mask for glowing skin can be the ultimate savior because it gives the skin an additional dose of vitamins, minerals, and hydration. And that is a boost of defense against, well, the world.  A face mask can draw out toxins, rid the skin of impurities, deeply hydrate, remove excess oil, and overall give skin a luminous, radiant glow. A once-a-week application can significantly benefit the complexion—after just a few weeks.

Now the question is: Which mask should you buy? Of course, we’re partial to our Absolute Anti-Aging Face MaskUltimate Brightening Face Mask, and Deeply Clarifying Face Mask. But we’re also partial to home made face masks especially, since Ayurveda skincare makes it oh-so-easy with several star ingredients – often available in the comfort of your home! Looking for some effective home remedies for skin? These simple but highly effective DIY face masks need just a few pantry ingredients (or maybe a quick grocery run) to make! Here’s to glowing skin.

(Editor’s note: Our experts love hearing from you, so if you have a question about an ingredient, are looking for a substitution, or are curious for customized natural skincare solutions, please shoot us a note!)

Carrot,Honey, And Lemon Mask

This nutrient-rich honey facial mask works as a lightweight and brightening moisturizer. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene and vitamins C and K, three ingredients that slow down the appearance of aging, nourish, and moisturize the skin.  Yogurt And Egg White Mask

Yogurt contains zinc and lactic acid, which respectively eases inflammation and exfoliates. Massaging plain yogurt onto the face removes dead cells, tightens the pores, eases fine lines, and hydrates. When using yogurt in your skin care make sure to stay away from the flavored and sweetened varieties.

For an exfoliating face mask, you can mix the whites of two eggs with two tablespoons of plain yogurt, apply the mixture to freshly cleansed skin, and leave it on for about seven minutes before washing off with warm water and following with a final cool water rinse.

 Banana And Sandalwood Mask

Bananas are superstars for the skin. They’re loaded with vitamin B6, iron, manganese, vitamin C, potassium, biotin, and copper. These nutrients help to rejuvenate the complexion and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Sandalwood helps to balance the skin’s oil production—for both dry and oily skin—as it harmonizes the skin’s natural oil production instead. Sandalwood also calms inflammations and gives the skin a radiant glow.
