THE BRILLIANCE OF ROSE OIL—AND WHY IT MAKES SKIN HEALTHY AND LUMINOUS

If there is one signifying element of beauty—a thing that epitomizes the scent, color, and feel of elegance—it is the rose. An ancient flowering perennial distinct for its curved, spiraled leaves, richly pigmented color, and heady, sweet scent, roses are abundant in type (there are more than 300 hundred species) and age-old narratives. Where there is love, there are roses. Where there is opulence and desire, there are roses. Where there is a celebration of beauty, there are roses.

And where there is health and glowing skin—luminous, bright, youthful skin—there are roses. That is because roses deliver incredible therapeutic and wellness benefits via their oil. For centuries, people have been using rose oil—carefully pressed and extracted from the rose petals—for its believed healing, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective properties. Ayurvedic practitioners have long used rose oil as a natural tension reliever and mood booster. Its gorgeously sweet sent has been known to stimulate a sense of positivity. It is rich in healthy compounds including essential fatty acids, minerals, and antioxidants (particularly flavonoids and anthocyanins), which makes rose oil an absolute goldmine of an ingredient for the skin. Remarkably moisturizing, its incredible emollient properties provides the dermis with deep hydration, helping to transform a dry, lackluster complexion into one that is supple and glowing. Rose oil’s natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness, helping skin appear brighter and even toned.

The fact that rose oil is no easy feat to cultivate adds to its romantic allure. The blossoms naturally have a low content of oil. Picture a 5 milliliter bottle: a very small glass vessel about the size of the palm of your hand. It takes about 12,000 rose petals to produce enough oil to fit in that one small bottle. (On average, it takes about 10,000 pounds of rose petals to yield about one pound of rose oil.) The harvesting is done completely by hand during peak rose blossom season in the early summer. On the UMA farm in central India you find harvesters gently plucking the roses—all grown sustainably and organically—by hand in the very morning, their baskets full of tender petals that look like vibrant fuchsia jewels. Later that same day the oil is extracted from the petals through a steam distillation process. (The process is meticulous and controlled in order to preserve the scent and integrity of the oil.)

It is in knowing this complexity and bounty of the rose that you might find yourself gazing at the flower with a sense of reverence. This twirled, twisted, complicated botanical beauty has shed so much positivity in the world. And no matter what type of skin you have, a few drops of its oil in your regimen can make the most incredible, noticeable, decadent difference in how you look—and feel.

Here are several UMA products supercharged with the brilliance of rose oil:

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS: ESSENTIAL OILS FOR RADIANT, MOISTURIZED SKIN

In our Anti-Aging Essentials series, we break down ingredients that are potent tools against common aging concerns. This is a roundup of some all-star ingredients for skin hydration and moisture.

When it comes to moisturizing, people often find it challenging to find a moisturizer that effectively hydrates the skin without irritating it or causing a breakout. Chemicals and fragrances in moisturizers are a common source of irritation or allergic reaction, leaving many to seek all-natural solutions to dryness, flakiness, and itchiness.

Especially as we age, our skin may become dryer, patchier, and rougher, making the need for a high-quality source of hydration more immediate. This happens for a wide variety of reasons, including accumulated sun damage, other environmental factors like dry air and pollution, and the loss of sweat and oil glands. Health problems like diabetes and kidney disease and certain medications may also exacerbate skin dryness.

One solution to the challenge of skin hydration is essential oils and extracts. By harnessing natural ingredients and potent botanicals, essential oils and extracts provide an all-natural, soothing alternative to other moisturizing products. Packed full of nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants, they can help balance oil levels, infuse the skin with long-lasting moisture, and leave it looking plump, radiant, and soft. (However, everyone’s skin is different! While many essential oils naturally mimic the oil production processes of the skin, some people may find themselves sensitive to certain oils.)

Here are three best face oils and extracts that can turn the challenge of combating dryness into a luxurious, indulgent, and efficacious self-care ritual.

1

ROSEHIP OIL

Luxurious rosehip oil works wonders for hydrating and moisturizing the skin—with a calming, indulgent aroma to match. As cosmetic research scientist Marisa Plescia tells Byrdie, “With high levels of essential fatty acids, especially omega-3 (linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linoleic acid), rosehip seed oil can effectively soften skin and improve skin barrier function.” Thanks to these fatty acids, rosehip oil strengthens skin cell walls and thereby prevents moisture from escaping. As studies show, it makes a fantastic remedy against dryness and flakiness by locking in long-lasting moisture. Furthermore, rosehip oil is a dry oil, so it hydrates and softens the skin without leaving behind any oiliness or greasiness.

At the same time that rosehip oil provides deep hydration, it also brightens and tightens the skin. It can also soothe inflammation. As a result, it leaves the skin looking supple, bright, and even.

UMA RECOMMENDS: UMA Pure Calm Wellness Bath Oil

Vitamin E and rich antioxidants provided by Jojoba and Rosehip oils help cocoon the skin in rich emollients that soothe irritation, eliminate dryness, and heal cracked skin.

2

TOMATO EXTRACT

While we often hear about the benefits of tomatoes on our health, this stellar ingredient can also bring skin rejuvenation and restoration. Tomato extract boasts a host of antioxidants and nutrients—like Vitamins A, B, and C, potassium, and lycopene—that provide powerful anti-aging benefits and a naturally glowing skin. For example, studies show that the Vitamin C—abundant in tomatoes—tightens the skin and combats hyperpigmentation.

In addition, the pectin and flavonoids in tomato extract have been shown to promote exfoliation, leading to softer, more supple skin. Furthermore, potassium-rich tomato extract also has powerful moisturizing properties, helping the skin to retain water and instill long-term hydration

UMA Recommends: Absolute Anti Aging Aloe Rose Toner

Vitamin C repairs damage, and enzymes of tomato and yogurt tighten pores and fend off age spots.

3

TURMERIC EXTRACT

In addition to its role as a flavor-packed ingredient in the kitchen, turmeric contains a superstar compound—circumin—that also offers powerful benefits for our health. A bioactive compound rich with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, circumin has been shown to improve conditions that range from heart disease to depression.

Turmeric extract’s powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties also make it a potent skin moisturizer and brightener. While its antioxidants protect the skin from free radical damage and lighten hyperpigmentation, turmeric extract simultaneously hydrates, exfoliates and moisturizes the skin.

As a result, the skin becomes more soft and radiant due to the power of turmeric to bring out a natural, healthy glow.

UMA Recommends: Flawlessly Firming Neck Chest & Décolletage Serum

The neck, chest, and décolleté areas are among the first to show signs of stress and aging, and this blend was painstakingly formulated to help restore the appearance of radiance and tightness to these delicate areas

THE UMA OIL FILES: THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR FINE LINES & WRINKLES

While aging is inevitable, your skin is not necessarily obliged to show it! Our skin has two layers – the inner layer is the epidermis and the dermis is the outer layer, which is primarily made up of collagen and other proteins. Collagen is vital to maintaining the skin’s appearance of elasticity and smoothness; however, different factors contribute to the reduction of collagen production in the skin. Some of these factors include air pollution, toxins, dehydration, unhealthy diets and sun damage. Many of us try to counter this damage (and rightly so) through a shift towards a healthier, more holistic lifestyle. We sometimes may, however, overlook the fact that many of our skincare products may actually be the source of those damaging toxins, and that switching to all-natural and organic skincare products can create the ultimate impact towards achieving that youthful glow.

As a quick reminder – essential oils are concentrated oils, extracted from plants, which contain highly aromatic properties. These oils have long been some of the primary ingredients in much of anti aging skincare as the topical and olfactory use of a variety of essential oils has been found to help treat and prevent signs of aging. Here are some of the best essential oils for helping improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

ROSE ESSENTIAL OIL

Arguably, the best essential oil for maturing skin is the gorgeous, precious rose essential oil. Extremely active in promoting and retaining skin’s natural moisture, it is very effective in delivering moisture to maturing skin, which can often tend towards dryness. Additionally, rose oil lacks the pesky, pore-clogging buildup that results from synthetic creams. As a consequence, your skin looks naturally plumped, hydrated and radiant. Also, unparalleled astringent action of rose oil is excellent at reducing any signs of redness or skin sensitivity, so you can bare your skin like never before!

For the anti-aging, rejuvenating effects of rose essential oil, UMA recommends:

SANDALWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

This oil has unparalleled toning properties, which perfectly enable it to combat wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead, or around the eyes. The proven results of sandalwood essential oil also stem from its ability to reduce inflammation and hyperpigmentation, thereby providing a youthful glow to the skin.

For the nourishing, brightening, and smoothing benefits of sandalwood essential oil, UMA recommends:

NEROLI ESSENTIAL OIL

Citrus oils can help with the absorption of Vitamin C into your skin, and that is how this oil helps repair and brighten the skin to create a luminous skin tone. Neroli essential oil adds elasticity to the skin, and also reduces the depth of wrinkles and improves the appearance of any scarring on the surface of the dermis.

To reduce scarring and add elasticity using neroli essential oil, UMA recommends:

GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

As a natural astringent, geranium essential oil promotes the appearance of pores to give the skin a smoother surface and appearance. This anti aging oil also enhances natural skin turnover and helps develop the appearance of overall healthy skin by boosting the health of existing cells.

To use geranium essential oil to promote healthy, smooth skin in your lips and eyes, UMA recommends:

FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL

This oil is known for its deeply soothing properties, along with antiseptic and disinfectant qualities that help resurface the skin and minimize any imperfections on the skin. The olfactory benefits of frankincense essential oil include the reduction of stress and anger, and the balancing of the body and mind.

To reduce skin imperfections and stress with frankincense essential oil, UMA recommends:

CLARY SAGE ESSENTIAL OIL

A natural skin-balancer, clary sage essential oil works to promote and control the production of sebum on the skin. This essential oil allows the dermis to obtain the healthiest oil balance from within by obtaining the optimal PH level of the skin. Aromatherapeutic factors include mood lifting abilities as well as aiding to alleviate anxiety.

To reduce oiliness and lift your mood with clary sage essential oil, UMA recommends:

CARROT SEED ESSENTIAL OIL

Packed full of essential nutrients, carrot seed essential oil rejuvenates the skin and stimulates skin. It fights off free radicals, helps clean out your pores and also improves the tone of your skin – ultimately helping to achieve an overall glowing appearance.

For the smoothing, glowing effects of carrot seed essential oil, UMA recommends:

INTEGRATING ESSENTIAL OILS INTO YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

The use of essential oils has proven to be pivotal in the prevention of wrinkles, and there are a variety of ways that you can integrate these oils into your daily regimen.

Yes, face oils are all the rage right now, so you might want to get yourself a bottle of these ultimate skin saviors. But don’t forget, you can also try making your face oil at home! Select organic, ethically sourced essential oils and combine your favorites into a 5-10% essential oil – 90-95% carrier oil ratio. As you likely know, essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil for safe and efficacious application. Don’t know which carrier oil to pick? Our favorite is pomegranate! Pomegranate oil – so powerful as base, and so rich in Vitamins A, K, D, E and antioxidants – that it might as well be an active – is an excellent choice for a carrier oil because of its rapid absorption quotient. Organic pomegranate oil feels and absorbs like a serum, but does everything wonderful (and more!) that a great oil would do.

Another great carrier oil option, especially for blemish-prone skin is grapeseed oil. This oil is a wonderful – if slightly counterintuitive – choice for those of us with oily and/or acne-prone skin, as it actually controls skin’s natural oil producing functions and has excellent anti-inflammatory properties (great for soothing skin that’s already breaking out). It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, and is also an especially effective way to minimize dark circles under the eyes, when applied daily for a few weeks.

If you’re not quite ready for face oils or to replace your daily moisturizer, you can try adding a few drops of sandalwood, neroli or frankincense essential oil to your moisturizer before mixing and applying. You also have the option of applying any of the moisturizing oils directly as eye serum (after appropriately diluting in a carrier) or including them into your facial wash.

THE UMA OIL FILES: THE SKIN SUPERPOWERS OF POMEGRANATE OIL

This fresh, fruity oil, made by cold-pressing the seeds of a pomegranate, is lightweight, hyper-absorbent, and packed with antioxidants – for unparalleled effects on skin, hair, and overall health!

1

Stimulates hair growth

Not only does pomegranate oil leave your locks silky smooth, but it also works to promote hair growth! Its rich vitamin and antioxidant content stimulates blood circulation in the scalp, which in turn encourages your hair to grow at a faster rate. Pomegranate oil is also ideal for those suffering from dandruff or dry scalp, as it moisturizes deeply (without leaving any of that dreaded greasy residue!)

2

Boosts skin tone

Pomegranate oil is effective for all skin types, and is a great way to maintain the health of the collagen in your skin. This daily face oil deeply nourishes the outer layer of skin, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improving the skin’s overall elasticity. An added bonus is that unlike counterparts like coconut or argan oil, pomegranate oil is ultra lightweight face moisturizer, and absorbs rapidly. Its superior absorbency allows it to quickly penetrate deeper layers of the skin, and deliver vitamins A, D, K and E to the subcellular epidermis, making it an ideal choice for those looking to rapidly repair dry or damaged skin.

3

Reduces skin damage

Pomegranate seed oil is rich in ellagic acid (a natural antioxidant) and Omega-5 fatty acids, both of which fight off free radicals that can lead to premature signs of aging. Research has shown that using this absolute anti aging face oil can also have an impressive effect on lowering sun damage and the risk of skin cancer. When added to sunscreen, one study indicated a whopping 20% reduction in skin damage! (Howard Murad M.D, University of Wisconsin)

4

Improves the immune system

Pomegranate seed oil can be used internally, as well as externally, as the fatty acids found in the oil provide an illness-fighting boost for your immune system! Antimicrobial properties found in pomegranates can help fight off harmful bacteria in the stomach even as they promote good bacteria and help maintain digestive health. The antioxidants in pomegranate also have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce skin irritation and promote regeneration.

5

Kind to the heart

If you’re not already sold on pomegranate oil, you should also know that this skin rejuvenation oil is beneficial for heart health! There is growing evidence to suggest that adding pomegranate to your diet, via either food or supplements, can improve the quality of your heart’s oxygen supply, thereby helping to combat high blood pressure, heart disease, and other heart ailments.

THE UMA OIL FILES: CARRIER OILS 101

The increasing popularity of skincare oils means a marketplace that’s saturated with options, all allegedly providing incredible benefits for skin and body. So, what’s the difference between carrier oils and essential oils, and how do you choose the one that’s right for you? With a little help from us, of course!

To begin with, carrier oils are usually cold pressed from fruits and nuts, and have strong penetrative abilities that allow them to carry botanically derived essential oils into the skin. The “carrier” portion of the name also talks to its ability to “carry” essential oils into the skin due to their absorbent capabilities. (Essential oils are highly volatile and concentrated. If applied without being diluted in a carrier, a majority will sensitize skin, and evaporate with little penetration, defeating the therapeutic purposes of their application).

Here, we go over the vital characteristics of some major players in the carrier oil game! These nutrient-rich oils have unique benefits for the skin, with or without the addition of essential oils.

1

Coconut Oil

Classic coconut oil was one of the first beauty oils to go mainstream – and for good reason. Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, which not only keep skin smooth, but also prevent it from losing moisture. It’s also rich in capric, caprylic, and lauric acids – three fatty acids that have natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Not to mention, coconut oil is one of the most cost effective options on this list, and can be used to make a variety of homemade toiletries, including deodorant and eye cream!

2

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil, distilled from the seeds of the jojoba tree (native to the Southwestern United States and Mexico) has a consistency (and molecular structure) that is very similar to the oil your skin produces. Mimicking the structure of your skin allows this oil to rapidly penetrate the skin and deliver nutrients sub-dermally.

This also means it may be able to “convince” your skin that it has already produced enough oil – thereby preventing excess oil production and the resultant greasy skin! It has a longer shelf life than many of its counterparts – meaning if you store it in a cool, dry place, it will retain its nourishing properties for a long period of time!

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS: UMA OIL REVEALS 7 ESSENTIAL OILS

Often touted as miracle ingredients, argan oil and coconut oil have rapidly become household names. While it’s true that both of these oils are excellent natural beauty products, there are many new kids on the block that also deserve a moment in the spotlight. After some rigorous – and occasionally messy – experimentation, we’ve chosen our top 7 ayurvedic hair oils for taming your mane, incorporating these in your hair care routine might do wonders.

Agave Oil

As one study demonstrates, Indian gooseberry extract promotes the production of pro-collagen (a precursor to collagen) and also helps prevent the breakdown of collagen. As a key to maintaining skin elasticity, this collagen stimulation thus helps the skin remain firm and youthful. By forming the protein matrix in the skin, the presence of collagen also contributes to skin strength and brightness. Thus, in boosting collagen production, Indian gooseberry helps the skin become firm, bright, and healthy like a natural face mask.

Jojoba Oil

Our scalp naturally produces oils to rejuvenate and cleanse the hair, but unfortunately the early stages of this process can leave hair looking greasy. If you’re not willing to put up with a few days of liberal dry shampoo application, Jojoba oil may be a great blemish solution for you. It mimics the qualities of the natural oils your body produces, and may trick your scalp into slowing down its oil production process. Jojoba oil not only offers deep moisture, but also works as a scalp cleanser, ensures strong and thick hair and dandruff-fighting solution!

Almond Oil

If your hair tends to be on the dry side, almond can give you a much need moisture boost. This sweet smelling oil is on the heavier side, which makes it ideal for sealing in moisture and protecting hair from the harmful effects of blow dryers and heated styling tools.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D, E and B6, meaning it is ultra nourishing for dry or over processed hair. The fatty acids found in this oil can penetrate the scalp and hair to fortify it and add a deep shine. We love how lightweight this oil feels, and how well it works across hair types!

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is a great choice for those who suffer from a dry scalp or are prone to bouts of dandruff. Safflower oil is high in omega-6 and deeply penetrates the scalp to rid it of debris that can irritate skin and diminish shine. Compared to some of its peers, safflower oil is also quite the bargain! It is one of the best oils for hair growth.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil may not be as common as some of our other picks, but it’s an incredible tool for treating greasy scalps and hair. This oil has natural antifungal properties, and helps to cleanse your scalp of impurities and promote hair growth – with minimal greasy residue. We’re also in love with the fragrance of rosemary oil – it has our hair smelling almost good enough to eat!

Amla Oil

Also known as Indian Gooseberry oil, Amla oil is much loved around globe and works well across hair types. It’s a great pick for deep cleansing the scalp, which will in turn promote hair growth. Long term users of Amla oil also swear by its anti-graying properties – and when it comes to avoiding chemical hair dyes, we’re all ears!

HOW TO SELF-MASSAGE: THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR RELAXATION

Self-massage is one of the most powerful gifts that you can give yourself. From increasing circulation to stimulating the functions of your organs, a self-massage detoxifies your body and improves your sleep—all from the comfort of your own home. How can you make this gift even sweeter? By selecting mindfully from these great oils, you can enhance the quality of your self-massage by serving your body’s individual needs.

What Role Do Essential And Carrier Oils Play In This Act Of Self-care?

Essential oils are loaded with therapeutic benefits and can be added to any type of massage for aromatherapy purposes. We recently launched our own Absolute Essential Self-Massage Oil with a revered combination of arjuna, brahmi, and mustard oils for all your self-massage purposes. Here, we will walk you through the basics of some of these oils and their benefits in order to help you make the most out of your self-massage.

1

 MUSTARD OIL

If you struggle with joint pain and stiffness, warm mustard oil is your friend. Extracted from mustard seeds, mustard oil is often used for health and therapeutic purposes. As a side note, mustard oil is banned for cooking purposes by the FDA, and it should not be consumed due to the potential heart problems it can cause.

THE BENEFITS:

While mustard oil has many beneficial properties, one of its main benefits in massages is pain relief. The oil can be directly applied to fungal infections to prevent growth, and it can also help ease arthritis.

When applied to the body during a self-massage, mustard oil will improve blood circulation and flush the skin, causing one’s body temperature to increase. In the case of a scalp massage, the warm oil will prevent hair loss by increasing circulation.

Additionally, when combined with camphor, mustard oil becomes even more effective at reducing pain. A quasi-experimental study published in IOSR Journal of Nursing and Health Science (IOSR-JNHS) revealed that warm mustard oil with camphor massage reduced the pain level more significantly than warm mustard oil massage. In Ayurvedic tradition, the navel is a center point for balance in the body. 2

COCONUT OIL

While you may have used coconut oil in the kitchen, it also has medicinal properties that make it an ideal candidate for your next self-massage, especially if you struggle with dental problems, stress, or skin issues. Coconut oil is made of lauric acid and vitamin E, and it is an ideal antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient.

THE BENEFITS:

Coconut oil aids in reducing stress, eliminating fatigue, and preventing tooth decay. It also provides major benefits for the skin. When fractionated coconut oil is massaged into the skin, the deep conditioning and moisturizing effects of massaging help skin relax. The oil also increases skin permeability, reduces stretch marks, and prevents dehydration. Additionally, properties assisting collagen fibers also strengthen skin and prevent aging.

There’s also an added benefit for new mothers: A study by Indian Pediatrics showed that the application of coconut oil led to higher weight gain velocity than did mineral oils amongst preterm neonates.

3

ARJUNA OIL

The ancient physicians of the Indian sub-continent have been using the bark decoction of the indigenous medicinal plant, Terminalia arjuna (also known as Arjuna), for centuries. Known to be beneficial in anginal pain, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and dyslipidemia, Arjuna oil is often referred to as the “king of cures” in self-massage.

THE BENEFITS:

Arjuna oil bolsters cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart muscles and increasing blood circulation. As a result, it can help prevent a myriad of diseases, including (but not limited to) hypertension, hemorrhage, inflammation, and skin disorders. Furthermore, a study published in Indian Journal of Horticulture suggests that ailments like eczema, itching, rashes, scars and serious skin conditions like psoriasis can also be treated with the regular use of arjuna oil.

4

CARDAMOM OIL

Another ingredient you might find in your kitchen, cardamom, is one of the most highly-prized spices in the world. Popular for its antimicrobial property, it acts as a resistor for most common pathogens, reducing the growth of harmful bacteria. Cardamom oil contains natural phytochemicals that augment the levels of glutathione, a natural antioxidant, in the body.

THE BENEFITS:

Due to its ability to augment glutathione levels, cardamom oil helps the body fight against cancer. To a certain extent, it can even help prevent cancer. More generally, cardamom oil can also help mediate pain: research in the Encyclopedia of Applied Plant Sciences concludes that when used as a part of a massage, cardamom stimulates sensory fibers in the skin. This stimulation triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which then induces relaxation and decreases one’s perception of pain.

5

TURMERIC OIL

Ayurvedic healers have always regarded turmeric—a plant in the ginger family that is native to India—as a purifier. Like cardamom oil, turmeric contains phytochemicals that make it a natural antioxidant. Known as “the magic oil,” turmeric oil can address a wide variety of needs, including digestive problems, burns, and dental health.

THE BENEFITS:

The purifying effects of turmeric oil can aid with digestive problems, anti-carcinogenic activity, and anti-inflammatory needs. As a strong antibacterial agent, turmeric oil is often used to massage burns. It further helps the skin by preventing fine lines and promoting skin elasticity. But that isn’t all—surprisingly enough, one study demonstrated how the magical turmeric oil is also known to have therapeutic effects on dental health.
