ELEGANCE IN TRADITION: HOW AYURVEDA ELEVATES DAILY ROUTINE INTO HEALTH

When we talk about self-care, we often picture face masks, bubble baths, and meditation. However, Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medical system, takes self-care to a whole new level. It’s not just about external practices, but rather a holistic approach to health that involves the mind, body, and spirit. In Ayurveda, daily rituals are carefully designed to support wellness and create a deep sense of connection with oneself.

UNDERSTANDING AYURVEDA

To fully appreciate how Ayurveda elevates everyday rituals, it’s important to first understand the principles of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that dates back over 5,000 years.

“Ayurveda is an Indian heritage and is a continuously evolving health tradition. Ayurveda reveals an interesting journey from mythology to logical, rational, and evidence-based practices.”

Traditions, rituals and science of Ayurveda [1]

Ayurveda believes that each person is unique and should be treated as an individual. Ayurveda aims to restore balance to the body and mind, using a combination of natural remedies, such as herbs, spices, and oils, as well as lifestyle practices including meditation, yoga, and dietary recommendations. In Ayurveda, health is not just the absence of disease but a state of harmony between body, mind, and spirit.

THE ART OF ABHYANGA

One of the most popular daily rituals in Ayurveda is Abhyanga, the practice of self-massage using warm oil. Abhyanga is believed to balance the body’s doshas, or energy centers, which are essential to our overall well-being. The warm oil helps to nourish the skin, calm the mind, and relieve stress and tension in the body. Abhyanga is also a luxurious way to create a sense of ritual and relaxation in our everyday lives.

abhyanga

Abhyanga Is the anointing of the body with oil. Often medicated and usually warm, the oil is massaged into the entire body before bathing. For thousands of years, people have used abhyanga to maintain health, benefit sleep patterns, and increase longevity. It has also been used as a medicine for certain disorders. Abhyanga can be incorporated into a routine appropriate for almost anyone.”

Charaka Samhita Vol. 1, V: 88-89 [2]

SPICES FOR HEALTH

Another way that Ayurveda integrates elegance into our daily lives is through the use of spices. Spices not only add delicious flavors to Ayurvedic cuisine but also offer therapeutic benefits. For instance, Turmeric [3] has anti-inflammatory properties, Ashwagandha [4] for stress management, and Ginger [5] aids digestion and soothes the stomach. By incorporating these spices into our daily meals, we can enhance our health and add a touch of sophistication to our culinary creations.

Additionally, in Ayurveda, food and herbs are considered medicine, and following a Dosha-specific [6] diet can help balance the body and prevent imbalances. The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and they represent different elements of nature and bodily functions.

DAILY ROUTINES FOR HEALTH

“A daily routine is necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness. Routine helps to establish balance in one’s constitution. It also regularizes a person’s biological clock, aids digestion, absorption, and assimilation, and generates self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness, and longevity.”

Vasant Lad, B.A.M.&S., M.A.Sc., Ayurvedic Physician[7]

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of daily routines, known as “dinacharya,” to promote balance and well-being. These routines include waking up early, practicing yoga or meditation, eating at regular times, and getting enough sleep. Another popular Ayurvedic practice is tongue scraping. The tongue reflects our internal health, and scraping it removes toxins and bacteria, improving breath and digestion.

Your Ayurvedic morning routine at a glance:

  • Rise and shine: before 6:00 a.m.
  • Wash your face
  • Brush your teeth and clean your tongue
  • Gandusha (oil pulling)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Abhyanga (self-massage with oil)
  • Bath/shower
  • Yoga asanas – pranayama – meditation

These simple habits have a profound impact on our health and well-being. Ayurveda encourages us to approach these routines with intention and reverence, transforming them into elegant practices that enhance our lives. Proper digestion is seen as the foundation of good health.

INTEGRATING AYURVEDA INTO MODERN LIFE

While Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine, its principles can be easily integrated into modern life. By taking small steps such as incorporating spices into our meals, practicing self-massage, or setting a regular sleep schedule, we can enhance our health and well-being. Ayurveda reminds us to approach our daily routines with intention and appreciation, adding a touch of elegance to our everyday lives.

Moreover, daily rituals become part of an intentional and holistic approach to health. These practices may seem simple, yet they have a profound effect on our well-being. By incorporating Ayurvedic principles into our lives, we can prevent disease, manage stress, and cultivate a greater sense of connection with ourselves. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern life, it’s essential to recognize the value of traditional practices and the wisdom of our ancestors. Ayurveda is a perfect example of how elegance can be found in tradition.

THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN: HOW VITAMIN D SUPPORTS SKIN HEALTH AND SUN PROTECTION

In the realm of skin health and sun protection, one nutrient stands out like a ray of sunshine: vitamin D. Aptly dubbed the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D plays a pivotal role in nurturing skin health while also bolstering the body’s defense against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Let’s delve into the intricate relationship between vitamin D, skin wellness, and sun protection alternatives.

SUN EXPOSURE AND VITAMIN D SYNTHESIS

Our skin serves as a remarkable factory for producing vitamin D when basked in sunlight. The magic begins when sunlight triggers the conversion of a precursor molecule, 7-dehydrocholesterol, into active vitamin D, scientifically termed calcitriol. This process sets the stage for a cascade of benefits that extend far beyond mere sun-kissed skin.

Did You Know?

Catching the sun’s rays in a sunny office or driving in a car unfortunately won’t help to obtain vitamin D as window glass completely blocks UVB ultraviolet light.

N Engl J Med. 2007

SKIN HEALTH BENEFITS

Vitamin D isn’t just a passive bystander in the realm of skincare; it’s an active participant in promoting skin cell growth, repair, and regeneration. By bolstering skin barrier function, this essential nutrient helps to lock in moisture, ward off external stressors, and maintain optimal skin health.

SUN PROTECTION

Adequate levels of vitamin D serve as a natural shield against the onslaught of UV radiation. While it’s crucial to emphasize that vitamin D doesn’t replace sunscreen, it works hand in hand with sun protection measures, enhancing the skin’s resilience to UV damage.

Did You Know?

Use of sunscreen; correctly applied sunscreen can reduce vitamin D absorption by more than 90%.

Am J Clin Nutr. 2004

SOURCES OF VITAMIN D

Sun exposure reigns supreme as the primary source of vitamin D. Just 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure a few times a week can suffice. However, dietary sources such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), fortified foods (milk, cereals), and supplements provide additional avenues for vitamin D intake. Striking a balance between safe sun exposure and sun protection is key to reaping the benefits of this vital nutrient.

RECOMMENDED AMOUNTS AND GLOBAL TRENDS

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D stands at 600 IU (15 mcg) daily for adults, with an increase to 800 IU (20 mcg) for individuals over 70 years old. Despite these guidelines, global trends indicate widespread insufficiency. Shockingly, an estimated 1 billion people worldwide grapple with inadequate levels of vitamin D, cutting across all ethnicities and age groups. [New England Journal of Medicine. 2007]

Did You Know?

Darker skin tones possess elevated levels of the pigment melanin, which functions as a form of inherent sun protection.

Nutrients. 2021

VITAMIN D AND HEALTH

The intrigue surrounding vitamin D extends far beyond skin deep. Research illuminates its potential role in reducing cancer cell growth, controlling infections, and curbing inflammation. While observational studies tout the benefits of ample vitamin D levels in combating various diseases, clinical trials are yet to provide definitive answers. [JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute. 2019 Feb 1]

BRIEF INSIGHTS: NATURAL APPLICABLE SUN PROTECTION ALTERNATIVES

When it comes to sun protection, embracing natural alternatives can augment the efficacy of traditional sunscreen. Ingredients like coconut oil, zinc oxide, and shea butter offer varying degrees of sun protection while nourishing the skin. However, it’s essential to recognize that these alternatives may not offer equivalent protection to commercial sunscreens, making them best suited as supplementary measures alongside protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours.

ORAL SUN-SUPPLEMENTS:

Polypodium Leucotomos

Derived from a South American fern, Polypodium leucotomos exhibits clinical benefits in skin conditions and shows promise in mitigating UV-induced damage. Research suggests that 240 mg taken twice daily for 60 days reduces sunburn episodes. [N Engl J Med. 2015], [J Clin Aesthet Dermatol. 2015]

Beta-Carotene

Beta-carotene, a plant-derived antioxidant, protects against UV-induced erythema and delays the onset of new skin cancers. However, it should complement, not replace, topical sunscreen use. [J Nutr. 2003], [Am J Clin Nutr. 2012]

Astaxanthin

Derived from algae and marine organisms, astaxanthin combats oxidative stress induced by UV radiation, making it a potent ally in skin protection. [Marine Drugs, 2014]

Vitamin-E Rich Foods

Nicotinamide/Niacinamide

Nicotinamide, a precursor to ATP production, safeguards cellular energy and facilitates DNA repair. Studies indicate its efficacy in reducing the incidence of skin cancers when taken regularly. [Am Health Drug Benefits. 2015]

Found in nuts, spinach, and oils, Vitamin E scavenges free radicals, slows collagenase activity, and reduces skin aging, complementing sun protection measures. [Indian Dermatol Online J. 2016]

SIGNS OF DEFICIENCY AND TOXICITY

Vitamin D deficiency poses a significant health concern, leading to conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Conversely, toxicity, though rare, can occur from excessive supplementation, manifesting as symptoms ranging from anorexia to irregular heartbeats.

In essence, the synergy between vitamin D, skin health, and sun protection underscores the importance of nurturing our skin from within while adopting prudent sun safety practices. By embracing a holistic approach that encompasses both internal nourishment and external safeguards, we can bask in the radiance of healthy, sun-kissed skin while safeguarding against the harsh realities of UV exposure.

Remember, your skin deserves the tender care of the sun and the shield of protection against its potent rays. Strike the perfect balance, and let your skin glow with vitality under the nurturing embrace of vitamin D.

DON’T GUIDE: SKIPPING PRE-DRY BRUSHING PREPARATION STEPS YOU’LL REGRET

Dry brushing – it sounds like one of those beauty rituals straight out of ancient times, doesn’t it? Well, that’s because it is! Dating back centuries, Garshana has been hailed as an Ayurvedic medicine, purported to have numerous health benefits. But before you dive headfirst into this seemingly magical practice, let’s talk about why skipping pre-dry brushing preparation steps is something you’ll deeply regret.

WHAT IS GARSHANA?

Garshana is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of dry brushing that has been used for centuries to promote health and well-being. This practice, also known as “polishing or rubbing” in Sanskrit, involves the use of a special brush made from natural fibers to massage the skin in circular motions.

1

DON’T RUSH: UNDERSTAND THE BASICS

First things first, let’s understand what dry brushing is all about. It’s a technique where you vigorously brush your skin with natural bristles, typically before you shower. This process isn’t just about exfoliation; it’s believed to enhance circulation, aid in detoxification, and even promote better digestion. Sounds fantastic, right? But here’s the catch – skipping crucial preparation steps can turn your dry brushing dream into a skincare nightmare.

2

DON’T IGNORE: POTENTIAL RISKS AND CONSIDERATIONS

While dry brushing boasts a plethora of benefits, it’s not suitable for everyone. Individuals with sensitive skin or certain skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis should exercise caution or consult a healthcare professional before attempting dry brushing. Moreover, areas with open wounds or inflammation should be avoided during the process to prevent further irritation or complications.

3

DON’T SKIP: PROPER TECHNIQUES AND SUPPLIES

To embark on a successful dry brushing journey, you’ll need the right tools and techniques. Opt for a brush with natural bristles and a long handle for optimal reach. May we suggest, UMA Lymphatic Detox Dry Brush? Start from your feet and work your way up in gentle, circular motions, always moving towards your heart. Remember to adjust the pressure based on the thickness of your skin and avoid sensitive areas or those with existing skin issues.

Here is a dry brushing guide:

Dry Brushing is the Simple Wellness Booster you Need

4

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE: PRE- DRY BRUSHING RITUALS

Now, let’s dive into the essential pre-dry brushing rituals that you simply can’t afford to skip:

1. Choose the Right Products: Incorporating body oils like UMA Absolute Anti Aging Body Oil or UMA Citron Glow Body Oil can enhance the dry brushing experience. These oils not only provide lubrication for smoother strokes but also offer additional skincare benefits, nourishing and hydrating the skin.

2. Focus on Lymphatic Drainage: Prioritize UMA Lymphatic Drainage Dry Brushing to optimize the detoxification process. This specialized technique targets the lymphatic system, aiding in the removal of toxins and promoting overall wellness.

WHAT IS LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE?

Lymphatic drainage refers to the process by which the lymphatic system works to drain excess tissue fluid back into circulation. The lymphatic system comprises lymphatic vessels, lymphatic organs, lymph nodes, and lymphoid tissue scattered throughout the connective tissue. Lymph, which is essentially tissue fluid, circulates through these lymphatic channels, facilitating the removal of waste products and maintaining fluid balance within the body.

3. Establish a Routine: Consistency is key when it comes to dry brushing. Set aside dedicated time in your schedule for this ritual, whether it’s a few times a week or daily. By making dry brushing a regular part of your skincare routine, you’ll maximize its benefits over time.

5

DON’T OVERDO IT

Dry brushing might seem like a miracle worker, but moderation is key. Start slow, with just once or thrice a week, and gradually increase the frequency as your skin adjusts. And if your skin starts showing signs of irritation, dial it back or consult a dermatologist.

6

DON’T FORGET: POST-DRY BRUSHING CARE

Once you’ve completed your dry brushing session, don’t neglect post-brushing care. Follow up with a cool shower to rinse off dead skin cells, then moisturize your skin with natural plant oils or hydrating balms. May we suggest UMA Absolute Anti Aging Body Balm or UMA Citron Glow Body Balm? This step helps replenish moisture and seals in the benefits of dry brushing, leaving your skin soft, smooth and rejuvenated.

7

DON’T BRUSH ASIDE HYGIENE

Your dry brush is your skin’s best friend, but only if it’s clean. Rinse your brush after each use and let it dry in a well-ventilated area to prevent mold or mildew. Give it a good cleaning with soap and water at least once a week to keep bacteria at bay.

In conclusion, dry brushing can be a transformative addition to your skincare routine, but only if you approach it with the proper preparation and care. By following these pre-dry brushing rituals and heeding our “don’ts” guide, you’ll set yourself up for a rewarding and fulfilling dry brushing experience. So, before you pick up that brush, remember: don’t skip the preparation steps—you’ll regret it!

SPRING INTO BALANCE: AYURVEDIC SELF-CARE ESSENTIALS FOR KAPHA SEASON

As spring blossoms into full swing, so too does the Kapha dosha, ushering in a season marked by rejuvenation and renewal. In Ayurveda, the ancient science of holistic healing, each season is associated with a specific dosha or mind-body type, and spring is the domain of Kapha. Kapha is characterized by qualities of heaviness, coolness, and moisture, and its influence can manifest not only in our internal constitution but also in our skin.

UNDERSTANDING KAPHA SKIN

Kapha skin, with its thick texture and tendency towards oiliness, requires regular cleansing and exfoliation to prevent clogged pores and breakouts. The excess sebum production can lead to acne and blackheads, making it crucial to keep the skin clean and clear. Kapha individuals may find their skin to be cool to the touch, reflecting the inherent qualities of this dosha.

EMBRACING AYURVEDIC SELF-CARE

In Ayurveda, beauty is seen as an expression of inner balance and vitality, with the mantra “true beauty comes from within” serving as a guiding principle. To address imbalances in Kapha skin, Ayurvedic skincare focuses on holistic practices that encompass not only external treatments but also lifestyle modifications. By harmonizing the entire body, Ayurvedic skincare can help eliminate doshic imbalances and promote radiant, healthy skin.

THE POWER OF TOUCH: EXPLORING THE BENEFITS OF AYURVEDIC MASSAGE FOR COUPLES

Couples massage has emerged as a popular avenue for couples to unwind and reestablish their connection. However, if you’re seeking to elevate your massage experience, why not indulge in an Ayurvedic couple’s massage? This time-honored Indian practice of healing and well-being is renowned for its opulent and refined approach to attaining equilibrium and serenity in the body, mind, and spirit.

Undoubtedly, massage plays a pivotal role in alleviating stress, clearing the mind, and relaxing the body. Yet, were you aware that a couple’s massage also bestows a multitude of relationship benefits? It presents an opportunity for bonding and rediscovering intimacy with your partner in an environment of utmost tranquility.

The Power of Touch

Ayurvedic massage is more than just a physical experience, it is also deeply rooted in the power of touch. In Ayurveda, touch is considered to be one of the most essential senses and has long been used as a form of therapy to promote healing and well-being. When two people come together with intention and focus on each other, the power of touch becomes even more profound. This is why Ayurvedic couple’s massage can be such a transformative and intimate experience for couples.

Exploring the Benefits

Apart from its relaxation benefits, massage in Ayurveda aims to balance the three doshas (energies) – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. By stimulating pressure points and using specific techniques, Ayurvedic massage helps restore balance, promoting overall well-being.

Ayurvedic couple’s massage not only has physical benefits but also enhances emotional connection and strengthens the bond between partners. The act of touching in a safe environment fosters trust, communication, and vulnerability.

Abhyanga is a luxurious massage technique that uses warm oil to envelop the entire body, from the scalp to the soles of the feet. Originating from Ayurveda, a traditional Indian system of medicine, Abhyanga is highly regarded and widely practiced for its ability to promote holistic well-being. By combining the nourishing properties of the oil with skillful massage strokes, this therapeutic practice is believed to enhance overall health and vitality. While typically performed by a professional massage therapist, Abhyanga can also be enjoyed as a self-care ritual in the comfort of your own home.

Massage Offers Several Benefits, such as:

Reduce Stress:

In a 2011 study, researchers examined how abhyanga affects stress in 20 healthy adults. Participants completed a stress-related questionnaire and had their heart rate measured before and after a 1-hour abhyanga massage. The study found that after the massage, subjective stress levels and heart rates decreased.

Improve Skin Health:

According to abhyanga practitioners, one of the main benefits is healthy skin. The oil used in the massage nourishes the skin, improving its overall appearance. Massage strokes are believed to increase skin blood flow, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, cellulite, and scars, improve skin smoothness and softness, and decrease hyperpigmentation.

Reduce Muscle Stiffness:

Abhyanga is thought to improve flexibility by decreasing stiffness and increasing mobility in tight muscles. Studies have shown that massage, such as ankle massage and self-massage before stretching, can improve joint flexibility and range of motion.

Lower Blood Pressure:

In the same 2011 study, researchers evaluated participants’ blood pressure. After abhyanga, blood pressure decreased in those with prehypertension. Massage can improve blood pressure by expanding blood vessels, promoting blood flow, and reducing resistance in the arteries.

Promote Lymphatic Drainage:

Massage is known to promote lymphatic drainage, although there is no specific research on abhyanga and lymph flow. The physical pressure applied during massage expands lymphatic vessels, encouraging lymph flow. This can be beneficial for conditions like lymphedema, where fluid accumulates in the lymphatic system causing swelling.

The Ritual of Ayurvedic Couple’s Massage

Unlike traditional massages, an Ayurvedic couple’s massage is not solely focused on relaxation. It is considered a ritualistic practice that incorporates various elements to help balance the mind, body, and spirit. This includes the use of specific oils, herbs, and techniques tailored to each person’s individual needs.

The massage is typically performed in a warm and inviting setting, with soft lighting and calming music. The couple is also encouraged to set an intention for their massage, which can further enhance the experience and bring them into a state of deep relaxation and connection.

Take Your Relationship to the Next Level!

It’s easy for couples to become disconnected and lose touch with each other. Ayurvedic couple’s massage offers a unique opportunity for partners to reconnect on a deeper level and strengthen their relationship. By incorporating this ancient practice into your routine, you can not only improve your physical and emotional well-being, but also deepen your bond with your significant other in a relaxing way.

Reconnect and Rejuvenate:

Couples often struggle to find time alone amidst the demands of work and family life. A couple’s massage provides an opportunity to relax and engage together, fostering reconnection.

A Shared Bonding Experience:

A couple’s massage offers a dedicated time for partners to catch up and communicate uninterrupted. It can also be a moment to simply enjoy each other’s company in peaceful silence. Sharing a new experience can bring couples closer.

Enhance Affection:

Hormonal imbalances can strain relationships. Massage helps regulate mood by promoting the release of feel-good hormones like oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, fostering intimacy and affection.

Complete Relaxation:

If you’re new to massage and feeling apprehensive, a couple’s massage provides a comforting and familiar environment. It’s an ideal way to unwind and discover the benefits of massage together.

Suitable for all couples:

While a couple’s massage can be a romantic experience, it’s also perfect for bonding and relaxation with close friends or family members. Mothers and daughters, best friends, and others find joy in sharing a couple’s massage as it deepens their connection.

UNLOCK YOUR SUMMER BEAUTY: 5 TIPS FOR BEACH-READY LOOK

Ah, summer. Time to hit the beach, break out the barbecue essentials and spend some serious time shopping for sundresses (let’s be honest, one can never have too many). But, due to increased humidity and sun exposure, all that summer fun can wreak havoc on your skin. Protecting your skin without weighing yourself down with a cumbersome routine is crucial during the summer – and we’ve got your covered. With these summer skin care tips you’ll be on your way to having a dewy glow all summer long.

1

Look in your kitchen for cleansers

Feel like you always have a constant sheen on your forehead during the summer? Oiliness and related breakouts are an unfortunate reality during hot, humid summer months. Cleansing is an absolute must, but many synthetic options do more harm than good. Chemically irritated skin is not a good look on anyone. Thankfully, there are a couple natural skin cleansers are hiding right in your kitchen! Try using apple cider vinegar as a cleanser (limit use to every other day) or try rubbing melon on your face and leaving overnight for a cooling effect.

2

Get dirty – with clay masks

When a stubborn breakout just won’t go away your skin may be in a need of some serious rehab. Face masks to the rescue! There are many great DIY options out there, and all are a far cry from the skin damaging chemical peels (don’t let us get started on that topic), but all natural options can also be found at high end retailers. A great basis to look for in a store bought mask is a clay like kaolin, which penetrates pores and wicks away excess oil. Just be sure to follow this simple tip when applying clay face masks: apply on clean skin and allow it to only partially dry. Rinse off at this stage to avoid overly drying your skin.

Although there are a myriad number of DIY face masks, but for those who are looking for a perfectly formulated product with these ingredients and more try our Deeply Clarifying Face Mask.

3

Practice safe sun

This is pretty simple: SPF, SPF, SPF. While there are not any completely natural options that exist in the sunscreen realm yet, zinc based sunscreen is a great naturally derived option. If you’re not planning on being in the sun that often, a quick one-step solution is to invest in a foundation with SPF for basic face protection. Sunscreen blocks out a lot of other minerals and chemicals, so make sure to apply it over your other skin care products! And, we hate to sound like your mom here, but time in the sun often goes hand in hand with dehydration. So keep that water bottle full and try infusing water with cucumber or lemon for flavorful twist.

4

And if that fails, use natural ingredients to heal sunburn

We’ve all paid for our over-exposure in the sun with red, painful and blistered skin before. While prevention is the best medicine when it comes to sun protection, treating sunburns the right away can prevent long term damage to your skin. The good news is the plethora of natural treatments out there makes it easy. Aloe vera gel is an obvious choice, but did you know you can rinse your skin in buttermilk to soothe the inflammation? Or make a cold compress out of oatmeal wrapped in gauze? Read more tips here.

Prep your body for bikini season

We are not about to give you suggestions on how to get a six pack in less than two weeks! But we can give you some serious summer skin care tips you can use all over your body. While the other nine months of the year you’ve been able to safely neglect everything below the neck, (hello, cellulite and bacne!), it’s now time to shape up. For glowing skin, without the weight of a traditional body lotion, try our Absolute Anti Aging Body Oil  like lavender essential oil blended with a carrier like coconut. You’ll love how soft and supple it makes your skin, as well as its ability to reduce redness. Feeling more confident in your own skin is the secret to making bikini season less daunting.

1

Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge

Introducing Ayurveda, an ancient healing system from India, dates back 5,000 years. Translating to ‘science of life’, Ayurveda encompasses the profound knowledge of living. It’s seen as the mother or the source of all medicines.

Ayurveda is all about taking care of our mind, body, and spirit. Rituals play a big role in our daily life, keeping us grounded and boosting our spirits. They bring a deep sense of calm and balance. Each Ayurvedic ritual has its own special benefits and can be tailored to suit different skin types and seasons.

Dr Vasant Lad Ayurvedic Physician, BAM&S, MASC and author of 12 books on Ayurveda states“Ayurveda is not just about treating diseases; it is about creating harmony in body, mind, and spirit.” [1]

2

The Essence of Rituals in Ayurvedic Care:

They’re all about finding that inner peace and harmony. So, you can see why rituals are such a key part of Ayurveda’s approach to self-care.

The Ayurvedic route to great health involves two simple steps:

Acknowledge the incredible significance of Hair and Skin in taking care of your well-being.

Making self-care a priority boosts your resilience to stress, amps up your energy levels, and enhances both your physical and mental health. Self-care isn’t just a fancy treat; it’s a necessary indulgence that adds to a life of sophistication and grace.

abhyanga

“Investing early in the health of your skin, with regular skin care, will not only better protect it from the harsh effects of changing seasons, but also keep you looking and feeling your best throughout the year,” says Steven Nwe, DO, a dermatologist with Northwestern Medicine. “The key to skin resiliency is knowing your skin and treating it well.”

5

Crafting a Personalized Self-Care Ritual:

To fully experience the benefits of Ayurvedic self-care, it’s important to create a personalized ritual that vibes with you.

Pick activities and practices that bring you joy and align with your preferences. For instance, if you love taking baths, make it a daily ritual with essential oils and bath salts. If yoga brings you peace, create a morning routine that eases you into the day.

Embrace this transformative experience. Let your body, mind, and spirit indulge in exactly what they desire. It’s time to nourish yourself and embrace a life of vitality and fulfillment.

But it is imperative to mention the use of Sun Screen as mentioned by Alex Serron, skin therapist at Heyday

The sun is responsible for 90 percent of skin’s aging, It must be worn every day, no matter the season or if you’re going to be inside. Don’t forget that UVA rays, which cause skin aging, can penetrate windows.”

6

Indulgence is not synonymous with selfishness

FROM KITCHEN TO SKIN: AYURVEDIC SUPERFOODS SECRETS

As we battle some crazy days of winter – let this be the season you take control of your skin through the monitoring of the food you consume. Eating the right superfoods for skin this season (and all year long!) can help you combat signs of dullness, aging, and dryness the all-natural way. Ranging from produce, to nuts and drinks, everything you consume can and will have impact on your skin. Packed with different vitamins and minerals, we catalog our favorite anti-aging foods that make it easy to achieve the perfect glow this winter. By simply incorporating these foods into your everyday diet, you’d be surprised by how easily you can reinforce your skincare regimen – from within!

1

Almonds

Antioxidant-rich foods like almonds are often referred to as the ultimate power food for the chilly winter days. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, B and E, minerals, and several antioxidants. All these nutrients help to keep the skin hydrated, promote skin elasticity, protect against pollutants and free radicals, and help with the regeneration of skin cells.

2

Broccoli

Adding more vitamin C to your diet can help prevent wrinkles and dryness that may be age or weather-related. Vitamin C provides skin-smoothing effects that are created due to the way it combats free radicals produced from UV rays, and also due to its role in synthesizing collagen, which is needed to maintain the skin’s firmness.

3

Cocoa

Cocoa may already be your list of things to consume this winter – and its nutrients will make sure you add more of it to your diet! Containing a type of flavonoid called epicatechin, cocoa helps increase your blood flow to the skin, boosting nutrient and oxygen supply – which is essential for keeping skin healthy.

4

Kale

While quickly becoming one of the most reached-for greens for vitamins for skin health, kale has been proven to be great for your skin and body overall. With high concentrations of Vitamin A, it can help combat the common dry and flaky skin that arises during the winter time. An added bonus is its high Vitamin K content, which can help get rid of tiresome under-eye circles!

5

Blueberries

No matter what form you decide to consume these, whether it be raw, cooked or dried – blueberries are full of antioxidants. This means that they help protect the skin from free radicals (that disrupt healthy cell production), leaving you with younger and smoother skin. Also commonly found as an ingredient in many skincare products, blueberries have an alkalizing effect, which means they can help prevent red, blotchy skin and other signs of inflammation that occur in an overly acidic body environment.

6

Flax Seeds

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, flax seeds help keep your skin hydrated – meaning they are one of your biggest allies to help combat signs of aging. Not only will it help reduce inflammation anywhere in the body (and on your skin), flax can also help keep your heart strong by lowering your triglyceride levels.

7

Avocados

Avocados are one of the great foods for collagen production. They are a great source of vitamins C, E, and monounsaturated fats. Vitamin C helps in the creation of elastin and collagen, which help bind skin cells together creating a softer, smoother surface. Vitamin E and monounsaturated fats help your skin lock in moisture and replenish nutrients in skin. Editor’s Note: While we adore Avocados for their skin-boosting benefits, Ayurveda also lays an emphasis on eating seasonally – and often Avocados fall into the summer-food variety of nutrition. If Avocado is not seasonally fit for your area in a given season, we recommend adding this more to a diet at a time it is more seasonally appropriate.

8

Tomatoes

Already perfect at almost any meal time, tomatoes are so packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that you will want to include these with everything you eat! High in lycopene, tomatoes are one of the most powerful foods in helping protect your skin from free radicals, while also helping to maintain moisture in the skin (which we all know is a must during this season!)

9

Green Tea

While you’re likely already looking to add hot, soothing drinks to your cold winter days, you’ll be surprised at how beneficial it will be to reach for those green tea bags more often. Consuming green gives you an overall immune system boost, and helps in the recovery of any imperfections on the skin’s surface. Green tea leaves can also be physically used and applied as a face mask, exfoliant, or even a toner to achieve a brighter, more awake look.

10

Carrots

Carrots are rich in vitamin A and they are, in fact, great year-round due to beta-carotene infused sun protection. As an antioxidant, vitamin A helps attack free radicals and makes it perfect to help treat skin conditions like pimples and acne, rashes, dermatitis and other skin problems. Packed with potassium, carrots also help combat winter-induced dry skin.

DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF NATURAL DIY FACE MASKS

The feeling of putting on a face mask after a long day is one of pure relief, relaxation and self-love. Add a long, soothing bath and a good book to the mix and you have a perfect recipe for an indulgent self-care night.

Applying face masks is about more than feeling relaxed at the end of a long day, though. Our skin is our first line of defense against the external elements, including UV damage, pollution, toxins, and other environmental impurities. It serves as a crucial barrier between our internal organs and the outside world. With such an important role to play, the skin is an organ that requires cleansing and care in order to flush out accumulated toxins and mitigate free radical damage.

Even a once-a-week application of a natural face mask can work wonders to draw out impurities and toxins from the skin, leaving it healthier and better-equipped to face the external world. In addition, face masks provide deep hydration, exfoliation and nutrition, leaving the skin looking bright, glowing, hydrated and tightened. What more could you ask for? If you’re ready to start pampering your skin with face masks but aren’t sure where to start, here are 6 face masks — 3 DIY and 3 from our own UMA product line — that you can try out with ease at home. Trust us, your skin will thank you later!

HOW FACE TONERS CAN REVAMP YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

A couple of weeks ago, we broke down the benefits of serum and how it helps the skin absorb essential nutrients to provide targeted results. But even before applying serum, there’s another skincare essential that preps the skin for a glowing, healthy complexion: toner.

When applied before a serum or moisturizer, a toner can go a long way toward helping the skin look even and radiant while also prepping the skin to better absorb the other elements of your routine. But while it’s a word that’s thrown around in the beauty world a lot, you might find yourself unsure of what it actually is. Does it dry skin out or hydrate it? Can I use it even if I have sensitive skin? Here, we break down the purpose and benefits of toner, and guidance on how to incorporate it into your routine.

What Is Toner?

In short, toner has the density and texture of water, allowing it to provide the skin with instant hydration. But it’s more than just water, of course—toners contain a number of additional targeted ingredients that, depending on your desired result, can have anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and brightening effects. While in the past toners were rough and drying, utilizing alcohol to remove oil from the skin, today’s toners are designed to gently nourish, hydrate and rejuvenate all skin types.

In addition to hydrating the skin, toners help slough off dead skin cells, bacteria and other impurities, leaving the skin prepped for a more effective, thorough absorption of other products.

“Your skin is like a dried-up sponge. If you put a thick cream on a brittle dry sponge, it won’t accept it and it isn’t ‘prepped’ for moisture. But if you wet the sponge, the cream will sink in more easily.”

Soko Glam co-founder and esthetician Charlotte Cho tells Allure.

Overall, toners help to remove impurities and restore nourishment and moisture to the skin after cleansing, which in turn helps to prime the skin for the rest of your routine. This simple step can ultimately make a big difference in promoting a healthy, hydrated glow.

What Are The Benefits Of Toner?

Gentle and nourishing, different toners are targeted toward different needs. However, their fundamental properties mean that they share the following benefits:

  • They Restore The Skin’s Ph Levels

After cleansing and/or exfoliating, the skin loses some of its natural oils and acidity, causing its pH levels to fluctuate. Toners help restore the skin’s acidic balance, replenishing and refreshing the skin with nutrients.

  • They Remove Impurities

While providing nutrients and hydration to the skin, toners also remove dead skin cells, bacteria, dirt and other impurities that may still linger on the skin after cleansing.

  • They Prime The Skin For Other Products

Like serums, toners also help the skin absorb other products more deeply and effectively, making them great primers for the rest of your routine.

In addition to these benefits, you can choose toners that combat acne and inflammation; promote tightness, evenness and other anti-aging effects; brighten the skin for a natural glow and more.

How Can I Incorporate Toner Into My Routine?

You should apply toner after cleansing/exfoliating and before other serums, oils and moisturizers. If you haven’t used a toner before, start out by applying it once every few days or once every other day, and if it seems beneficial to your skin you can bump it up to once a day. If the toner is gentle and targeted at hydrating and soothing, you can use it twice a day. To apply, you can spray some into your hands or onto a cotton pad and rub gently into the skin in circular motions.

As mentioned before, different toner formulations target different skin types and conditions. At UMA, we have three hydrating, detoxifying toners designed to cover a variety of needs.
