Salila Sukumaran

A passionate advocate for Ayurveda and Yoga, has traveled extensively and experienced the best of both the Western and Indian cultures. Her efforts have been recognized by AYUSH, India’s health ministry, and Kerala Tourism. When inquired about “What suggestions do you have for someone to fully experience their initial Ayurveda journey?”, our experts provided intriguing and insightful responses:

Salila Sukumaran shares insightful recommendations for maximizing the benefits of your initial Ayurveda journey, she observes:

“Ayurveda helps us go slow, and reconnect to our body. As we care for our body by feeding it nourishing fresh foods, and oil and bathing, hydrating with warm teas and broths, we begin to cultivate the habit of noticing our emotions and thoughts more closely. We become aware of our connection to the greater world, the sun’s energy, the moon’s energy, and the passing of the seasons. We may have previously neglected ourselves and been distracted with binge eating, and consuming media to cope. During the transitional phase of incorporating Ayurveda rituals, it is normal to feel unsure when some aspects of our life come into sharp focus. As the body gets healthier it begins to reject unhealthy food, a healthy mind begins to crave solitude for renewal, and friendly assurance that this is an important healing phase is key. It is always a good idea to stay in touch with your practitioner or like-minded friends as you gain strength in your inner wisdom.”

Key takeaway: Reconnect with your body, nourish it with wholesome foods and rituals and cultivate a deeper awareness of emotions and thoughts. Gain insight into the connection between yourself and the world, find support, and tap into your inner wisdom for profound renewal.

Dr. Risha Sharma, an esteemed Ayurvedic expert, dedicated to unlocking individual potential and addressing health concerns said,

“The most important factor for a person who is new to Ayurveda is a trusting and capable source. An Ayurvedic expert, who is well versed in the texts and has a good clinical hand can use his or her expertise to bring out the best in a person while addressing their health concerns.  Finding that trusting source (Ayurveda doctors) is key to experiencing Ayurveda at its best”

Key takeaway: Finding a reliable Ayurvedic expert is vital for newcomers to fully embrace Ayurveda and address their health needs effectively.

Dr. Zeel Gandhi presents exquisite suggestions for small and meticulous changes in your initial Ayurveda odyssey,

“Do not be hasty in changing your diet and lifestyle. Ayurveda strongly recommends leaving your old bad habits slowly and introducing new ones to the patient. Sudden changes even when done for the best are sure to trigger disorders in the system. So if you were sleeping past midnight for many years, and now hope to align your sleep-wake cycles to your circadian rhythm, do this gradually, shift the sleep time by 15- 30  minutes daily.

Similarly, if you want to quit smoking, taper it off, gradually.  And slowly introduce replacements. Naturally, the body will crave nicotine. Replace it with hot spices and herbs that give the body the energy boost it craves.”

Key takeaway: Make gradual changes to your diet and lifestyle to avoid triggering disorders, such as slowly adjusting sleep-wake cycles and tapering off habits like smoking.

Ensuring balance in every facet of your life is vital for maximizing the benefits of your Ayurvedic journey. This encompasses harmonizing work and leisure, rest and physical activity, as well as diet and exercise. By striving for equilibrium in all these areas, you can attain a state of optimal health and well-being.

Salila Sukumaran: The Ayurvedic expert, shares essential kitchen herbs for optimal health [9]

The use of spices is an important part of Ayurvedic cooking, and spices have medicinal properties that promote digestive health and wellness.

The non-negotiables in an Ayurveda newbie kitchen are:

  • Turmeric: Turmeric is especially the queen of the spice rack because it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Asafoetida [10]: Its properties are antispasmodic, expectorant, stimulant, emmenagogue and vermifuge. Asafoetida has also been used as a sedative. It also thins the blood and lowers blood pressure. It is widely used in India in food and as a medicine in Indian systems of medicine like Ayurveda.
  • Coriander: Coriander prevents flatulence and controls spasmodic pain as recommended by Ayurveda. Extract of coriander seeds has a marked antispasmodic activity. Coriander contains both Cineole and linoleic acid. These elements pose antirheumatic and antiarthritic properties which help reduce skin inflammations.
  • Pepper: Black pepper is a warming spice and contributes to the pungent taste. It is excellent for pacifying Kapha, helps pacify Vata, and increases Pitta.
  • Fennel [11]: “In Ayurveda, it holds a special role in digestion. Because of its cooling and sweet properties, it specifically strengthens and warms Agni (the digestive fire) without provoking pitta. As a tridoshic herb, fennel is also balanced for vata and kapha, making it a great digestive choice for anyone to keep on hand.
  • Cumin seeds [12]: Cumin is generally considered to be a heating herb. It is said to stimulate digestion, support the immune system, and help to relieve stress.

“In Ayurveda, every meal is a chance to nourish and heal.”

Acharya Shunya [1]

Ayurveda, a refined lifestyle choice, offers a fusion of wellness and tranquility. It goes beyond remedies or yoga classes. Ayurveda becomes a guiding philosophy, weaving through daily routines. Imagine serene meditation mornings, nourishing meals rooted in ancient wisdom, and rejuvenating skincare rituals. An Ayurvedic lifestyle transforms existence into an art form, harmonizing body, mind, and spirit. It’s a choice for an enriching and fulfilling life, where health and well-being are a natural state. Embrace this lifestyle, making refined choices across all realms of being.

In an exclusive interview with UMA editors, a distinguished panel of Ayurvedic pioneers, featuring the esteemed Dr. Varalakshmi Yanamandra, Dr. Priya Bahuleyan, and Dr. Muskan Soni, graciously shared invaluable insights on embracing transformative lifestyle changes. These eminent experts illuminated essential considerations when embarking on a journey towards an Ayurvedic way of life. Specifically, they were kindly asked to expound on the initial 3-5 steps one can embark upon.

INSIGHTS ON EMBRACING TRANSFORMATIVE LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Our expert, Dr. Priya Bahuleyan, is a senior Ayurvedic physician and lifestyle consultant at Kerala Ayurveda Ltd. She shares her insights on embracing an Ayurvedic lifestyle in a discussion with Uma editors. Here are the key elements she emphasizes:

  • Trust in the system: placing faith in the efficacy of Ayurveda.
  • A mindset for sustainable lifestyle changes:  adopting practices that are beneficial in the long run.
  • Seeking guidance from qualified Ayurvedic doctors exclusively.
  • Cultivating patience while recovering from chronic conditions.

Whereas, Dr. Varalakshmi Yanamandra believes that incorporating just 10% of Ayurvedic wisdom into our daily lives can have a profound healing impact on our bodies and overall well-being. Ayurveda, as a holistic healing science, emphasizes the interconnectedness between our lives and the natural elements. Optimal health is achieved by maintaining a delicate balance amidst the constant subtle changes within and around us.

Here are three key principles she suggests to follow:

a. Listen to your body: Begin by attentively observing the subtle signs your body communicates, such as appetite, bowel movements, and energy levels. These signals hold valuable insights into your overall well-being.

b. Harness your agni: Agni, our vital source of energy, plays a crucial role in digestion, assimilation, strength, immunity, and knowledge. Nourish it with wholesome food and positive thoughts to enhance its vitality.

c. Be in tune with Nature: Strive to align your diet and lifestyle with the changing seasons, emphasizing locally grown foods whenever possible. This practice strengthens your gut and harmonizes your well-being with the natural world.

In the words of Dr Varalakshmi

“Ayurveda is a healing science that says our life is intertwined with the elements of nature. Health is a result of finding a balance between the subtle internal and external changes that are happening every moment.”

Dr. Muskan Soni, an Ayurveda health coach, strongly believes in the effectiveness of Ayurveda for both acute and chronic conditions. These include knee replacement, migraines, digestive issues such as IBS, skin diseases like Psoriasis and vitiligo, as well as paralysis and sciatica, among others. Shared an overlay of how the Ayurvedic lifestyle should be explored:

  • Discover your Prakriti (body type). This will help you understand your specific requirements.
  • Follow a balanced, whole-food diet that aligns with your Prakriti, ensuring nourishment and balance.
lifestyle
  • Incorporate daily self-care practices into your routine, such as Abhyanga, Nasya, and stress reduction techniques.
  • Establish a daily routine that respects and synchronizes with your body’s natural rhythms.
  • Eliminate unhealthy habits that harm both your body and mind, while nurturing healthy habits that contribute to your overall well-being.

Embrace this refined lifestyle choice and experience the art of harmonizing your existence through daily rituals rooted in ancient wisdom. By following these steps, you can embark on a journey towards optimal health and well-being.

SELF-LOVE AND WELLBEING: VEDIC INSIGHTS BY BANI SINGH CHADHA

In today’s fast-paced world, where stress and uncertainty seem to be constant companions, finding moments of self-love and well-being is crucial for maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life. Drawing from the wisdom of Vedic astrology, renowned astrologer Bani Singh Chadha shares valuable insights and practical advice on incorporating daily rituals that can nurture a deeper sense of self-love and promote overall well-being.

UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF RITUALS

Rituals have long been recognized as powerful tools for transformation and self-discovery. They provide a sense of structure and stability in our lives, allowing us to connect with ourselves on a deeper level and cultivate a sense of purpose and meaning. According to Bani Singh Chadha, rituals are an important step to unlocking our true potential and fostering a greater sense of self-love and well-being.

EMBRACING THE ELEMENTS: A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Central to Bani’s teachings is the concept of embracing the elements—earth, water, fire, air, and ether—as a means of aligning ourselves with the natural rhythms of the universe. Each element corresponds to different aspects of our being, and by incorporating practices that honor these elements into our daily lives, we can create a more harmonious and balanced existence.

MORNING SUN SALUTATION: A PRACTICE OF GRATITUDE

One of the simplest yet most profound rituals recommended by Bani is the morning sun salutation. By offering gratitude to the sun each morning, we not only acknowledge its role as the source of life and energy but also invite its healing rays to infuse our being with vitality and positivity. This practice serves as a reminder of our interconnectedness with the universe and sets the tone for a day filled with purpose and gratitude.

BREATHWORK FOR INNER PEACE AND BALANCE

Another powerful ritual advocated by Bani is breathwork or pranayama. As the breath is intimately connected to our emotions and state of mind, incorporating conscious breathing exercises into our daily routine can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote inner peace and balance. By harnessing the power of the breath, we can cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and tap into our innate capacity for healing and transformation.

WATER OFFERING TO THE SUN: CLEANSING AND RENEWAL

An additional practice Bani suggests for cleansing and rejuvenation, alongside breathwork and sun salutations, is the act of offering water to the sun. Standing facing the sun, pour water slowly from a height. The optimal time for this offering is early morning as the sun is ascending, extending until an hour after sunrise. While pouring the water, chant “Om Ghrinim Surya Adityamu” 7 or 11 times. This act of pouring water, while gazing at the sun, harnesses the natural power of color therapy.

CULTIVATING A DAILY PRACTICE OF SELF-LOVE

In essence, the key to self-love and well-being lies in cultivating a daily practice of rituals that honor our connection to the elements and the universe. By embracing practices such as morning sun salutations, breath work, and water offerings, we can create a sacred space for self-discovery, healing, and growth. As Bani Singh Chadha reminds us, self-love is not a destination but a journey—a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and ultimately, self-empowerment. Through the practice of daily rituals, we can nurture a deeper sense of love and compassion for ourselves and cultivate a life filled with joy, purpose, and fulfillment.

AYURVEDIC PRACTICES FOR A BALANCED A SPRING

Dr. Varalakshmi Yanamandra, a seasoned Ayurvedic practitioner and health coach, shares her insights on maintaining health during the spring season. Having personally experienced the benefits of Ayurveda in her teenage years, Dr. Yanamandra pursued a medical degree in Ayurveda and has been practicing for over 12 years. As the director of Ayur Wellness and Pain Centre, she specializes in healing complex gut health and hormonal conditions alongside imparting traditional panchakarma therapies for chronic pain relief. Additionally, she imparts her knowledge by teaching Ayurveda at the Europe Ayurveda Academy and participating as a speaker at global health events.

Spring in Ayurveda:

Ayurveda, the science of life, emphasizes living in harmony with nature. Lord Krishna in Bhagvadgeeta notes the dominance of spring, a season characterized by warmth, unctuousness, and moisture – qualities associated with Kapha dosha. Dr. Yanamandra explains the importance of adapting one’s diet and lifestyle to counterbalance the effects of Kapha during this season.

Do’s for Spring Wellness:

  • Tastes: Pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes are recommended to reduce Kapha.
  • Protein Foods: Opt for warming legumes and meats like turkey, chicken, rabbit, and venison.
  • Exercise: Engage in gentle activities like walking or specific yoga poses to combat Kapha.
  • Vegetables: Include artichoke, broccoli, spinach, and other Kapha-pacifying vegetables.
  • Spring Drinks: Consume herbal teas with ginger and honey water made with plain boiled and cooled water, or lassi with a pinch of shunti for warmth.
  • Ayurvedic Detox: Spring is ideal for Panchakarma treatments to balance Kapha.

Don’ts for Spring Wellness:

  • Avoid Animal Proteins: Seafood, beef, lamb, and pork can increase Kapha.
  • Limit Unctuous Foods: Say no to oily, greasy foods, cheese, and cold items.
  • Skip Day Naps: Resist the temptation to nap during the day, as per Ayurvedic advice.
  • Certain Vegetables: Cucumbers, olives, tomatoes (raw), and sweet potatoes can exacerbate Kapha.

BALANCING KAPHA DOSHA IN SPRING:

Dr. Yanamandra emphasizes the importance of balancing Kapha dosha during the spring season to prevent imbalances in the body and mind. She outlines practical steps for maintaining this balance:

Spring Do’s for Kapha Dosha:

  • Kapha-Pacifying Diet: Incorporate light and warming foods, fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and warming spices.
  • Daily Exercise: Regular, gentle exercises like yoga, brisk walking, or dancing.
  • Daily Self-Care: Adopt self-care practices such as oil massage, dry brushing, and sauna therapy.
  • Adequate Rest: Ensure 7-8 hours of sleep per night with a relaxing bedtime routine.
  • Mindfulness Practices: Include meditation, deep breathing, and journaling for stress reduction.

Spring Don’ts for Kapha Dosha:

  • Avoid Heavy and Oily Foods: Fried, dairy, and meat products can clog the digestive system.
  • Maintain Regular Mealtime: Irregular eating habits can lead to digestive issues.
  • Limit Refrigerated Foods: Cold and processed items can cause inflammation and reduce immunity.
  • Mild Sun Exposure: Overexposure to the sun can lead to skin damage and increased Pitta dosha.
  • Healthy Sleep Patterns: Avoid staying up late or excessive screen time to prevent disruptions in sleep patterns.[1]

In conclusion, Dr. Varalakshmi Yanamandra provides a comprehensive guide to navigating the spring season through Ayurveda. By following these dos and don’ts, individuals can cultivate a healthy and balanced routine tailored to their unique needs. Happy Spring!
