INSIGHTS INTO WRINKLES: AYURVEDIC STRATEGIES FOR YOUTHFUL SKIN

Contrary to most Western sciences, in Ayurveda, the process of ‘Jara’ or aging is viewed not as an ailment but as a natural phenomenon that occurs due to the continuation of life.
Now, when it comes to this state of balanced living, several factors affect our bodies, both internally and externally, which are responsible for the disharmonious impressions of old age. These, in turn, lead to the appearance of mature skin with  pronounced wrinkles, fine lines, age spots , and such which are identified as characteristics of ‘Akala Jara’ or ‘premature aging’.

WRINKLES AND AGE: ‘KALA PARINAMA[1]

As time passes, our bodies experience changes that impact the efficiency of different systems. This can result in saggy skin, wrinkles, and dry patches. As we age, the reduction of elastin and collagen fibers in our skin causes wrinkles. The thinning of the subcutaneous layer, which provides structure, leads to sagging skin. Western medicine attributes this to a loss of collagen and elasticity in skin cells. Ayurveda suggests other factors that contribute to wrinkles and aging skin. Let’s explore these factors and learn how to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO WRINKLES: [2]

Wrinkles and Sun Exposure

Sun exposure is one of the primary causes of skin damage and wrinkling. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and other skin irregularities. Protecting the skin from the sun’s harmful rays is crucial to prevent premature aging.

 Skincare Routine and Wrinkles

As you age, your skin becomes more dry, sensitive, and easily irritated. Maintaining a consistent skincare regimen can help preserve your skin’s healthy glow. Cleansing and moisturizing your face twice a day, wearing sunscreen daily, and adding a topical retinoid can be beneficial.

Facial Expressions and Wrinkles

Repetitive movements with muscle contraction can also cause facial wrinkling. Frowning and squinting can cause deep wrinkles to form, particularly on the forehead and around the eyes.  These normal facial expressions, like smiling or raising eyebrows, can lead to wrinkles such as crow’s feet and forehead lines. Being mindful of your facial expressions can help minimize the appearance of these wrinkles.

Smoking and Wrinkles

Smoking not only poses various health risks but also contributes to the development of wrinkles. Research has shown that smokers tend to have more wrinkles, especially fine lines around the mouth. Quitting smoking can help slow down the aging process and improve the overall health of your skin.

ACHIEVING YOUTHFUL SKIN: ‘VARNYA [3]

– Routines or ‘Acharas’

Imbalanced daily routines, like irregular sleep patterns and exercise, along with neglecting self-care, can contribute to wrinkles and lines. Establishing a consistent routine for waking up, sleeping, and eating helps maintain undisturbed circadian rhythms. The body thrives on routine! Sleeping in the same position each night can cause facial wrinkles or creases due to external pressure on the skin. Changing sleep positions or using silk pillowcases helps reduce pressure and prevents wrinkles. Incorporating Abhyanga into your daily routine can provide valuable benefits.

-‘Ahara’ And Exercise:

Making informed choices about our diet is crucial to prevent premature aging. Poor dietary practices, like irregular meal timings and improper food combinations, can lead to indigestion and accelerate signs of aging. Ayurveda recommends a well-balanced diet with whole foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains, comprising at least half of our plate.

To encourage harmonious aging, a Sattvic diet consisting of light and healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and oil is recommended. While energy-giving Rajasic foods like meat, fish, milk, and cream should not be overindulged in. It is best to avoid Tamasic foods such as excessive sugars, processed and preserved food, and hard liquor.

In addition to nutrition, unhealthy habits like a sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise can worsen premature aging and damage to the skin. A diet high in fat and processed foods can impact skin texture and tone, leading to breakouts. Prioritizing a balanced diet and an active lifestyle is essential for maintaining healthy and youthful skin.

Understanding the causes of wrinkles and implementing preventive measures can help maintain healthy skin as we age. By protecting our skin from sun exposure, avoiding smoking, being mindful of facial expressions, repetitive movements, and sleep positions, and adopting a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine, we can promote youthful-looking skin for longer periods. Remember, taking care of your skin is an investment in your overall well-being.

LUXURY AYURVEDIC BEAUTY: THE RISE OF SUSTAINABLE & ETHICAL PRACTICES

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the demand for luxury Ayurvedic beauty products that not only enhance our well-being but also prioritize sustainability and ethics. This blog post explores the growing trend of incorporating Ayurvedic practices into the realm of luxury beauty and how they align with the values of conscious consumers.

Luxury Ayurvedic brands are taking a step towards sustainability and ethical practices in the beauty industry. We at UMA, for instance, embrace the use of hand-blown glass packaging for our beloved hair oil, body oil, face serums, and candles. Our brand aims to provide you with a truly indulgent experience while being mindful of the environment.

“Luxury is more than a label – it’s a statement of exquisite craftsmanship, characterized by an investment of time and attention to detail.”

Shrankhla Holecek, Founder and CEO of UMA.

THE ESSENCE OF AYURVEDIC BEAUTY:

Ayurveda, an ancient holistic healing system originating from India, emphasizes the balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Ayurvedic beauty practices transcend superficial treatments, prioritizing the nourishment of the skin through the use of natural and botanical ingredients. UMA harnesses the potency of Ayurvedic elements sourced from the lush meadows of India, providing skincare products that naturally nurture and nourish the skin.

ETHICAL PRACTICES AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Another key aspect of our brand is our commitment to ethical practices. The intricate flower-and-herb design that adorns our jars and cartons was sketched by Bhoomika Upadhyay, an artist and fashion designer, who was inspired by the flowers and herbs found in UMA meadows in India. The design was then executed by a Spanish design firm, with the motif screen-printed on the glass and external packaging. We also collaborate with local communities and artisans, empowering them through fair wages and providing sustainable livelihoods.

“We embrace technological advancements but believe technology will never be a substitute for experience, judgment, and personalized attention.”

Shrankhla Holecek.

THE RISE IN CONSUMER AWARENESS:

As consumers become more conscious of their choices, the demand for luxury Ayurvedic beauty products continues to soar. People are seeking products that not only deliver excellent results but also align with their values of sustainability, ethics, and overall well-being.

SUSTAINABILITY AS A CORE VALUE:

Luxury Ayurvedic beauty brands not only prioritize delivering effective results but also are committed to minimizing their environmental impact. UMA even pays attention to the smallest details, such as the labels on their glass jars. These labels are applied by hand using a non-toxic adhesive, and a two-step decorating process makes them easily removable, allowing you to reuse the jars. We wanted to ensure that the packaging could be easily recycled, so we did extensive research on the recyclability of the materials used. Our brand responsibly sources its ingredients, prioritizes eco-friendly packaging, and supports fair trade practices, making a positive contribution to the planet.

We at UMA  demonstrate our commitment to sustainability by using post-recycled stock for our cartons. We opted for screen-printing over an offset process to give the ink a “feathery” look and feel. We also used a spot UV printing technique to reflect quality.

“We wanted to ‘gift’ our customer the delight she expects from holding a truly indulgent product, in every aspect. But without the environmentally insensitive use of ‘bells and whistles’ that quickly make their way into trash and landfills.”

Shrankhla Holecek

Luxury Ayurvedic beauty is not just a passing trend, but a reflection of our collective desire for products that harmonize with our bodies and our planet. Through our dedication to sustainable and ethical practices, UMA exemplifies how luxury Ayurvedic brands can appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. By prioritizing craftsmanship, attention to detail, and recyclability, we showcase our commitment to both beauty and the environment.

DISCOVER THE POWER OF JOURNALING

Journaling has been used for centuries as a tool for self-reflection. It allows us to explore our thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a safe and private space. By putting pen to paper, we gain clarity on our inner landscape and deepen our self-understanding. Journaling also reduces stress, improves mood, and increases self-awareness. It is a powerful ritual for personal growth.

To harness the power of journaling, incorporate consistency, curiosity, honesty, and reflection. Make it a daily practice and reflect on your writing to identify patterns and insights that guide your growth journey.

MAKE SELF-IMPROVEMENT YOUR TOP PRIORITY

As we enter the second half of the year, it’s natural to think about areas of our lives that need improvement. However, instead of focusing on external goals or resolutions, why not make self-improvement your top priority? This can involve setting intentions for personal growth and development, practicing self-care and mindfulness, and working towards becoming the best version of yourself.

CANDLES: CREATING THE PERFECT AMBIENCE

Lighting candles during your journal ritual can create a serene and calming environment. Take a moment to inhale the aromatic essence and let it awaken your senses and your mind.

YOGA CLASS: CULTIVATING INNER BALANCE

Embrace the practice of yoga to cultivate harmony in both body and mind. Discover a yoga style that resonates with you and dedicate regular time to stretching, strengthening, and finding inner peace.

Consider trying the Mountain Pose (Tadasana), a posture that heightens your awareness of the mind-body connection and enhances mindfulness and presence – crucial for uplifting your mood. This empowering pose allows you to stand tall in your strength while connecting to your deep, conscious breath, a reliable method for boosting your spirits. Allow your yoga practice to ground you, melt away stress, and promote overall well-being.

ELEVATE YOUR LIFE WITH ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS

In addition to journaling, incorporating meaningful rituals into our daily lives can enhance our overall well-being. This could take the form of a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day, regular self-care practices, or even small moments of gratitude and reflection throughout the day. These rituals can help us feel more grounded and connected to ourselves.

This year, I’m committed to:

  • Working on Myself: Taking the time to reflect, set personal goals, and invest in self-improvement. Embracing opportunities for growth, whether through reading, learning new skills, or seeking personal development resources.
  • Creating Meaningful Rituals: Incorporating rituals into daily life to bring intention and mindfulness to everyday activities. Whether it’s a morning meditation, an evening gratitude practice, or a journaling session, developing routines that nurture my mind, body, and soul.
  • Enhancing Work-Life Balance: Striving for a harmonious integration of work and personal life. Prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, and creating a healthy balance that allows me to thrive in both professional and personal domains.

By embracing this journal ritual and setting these resolutions, you are embarking on a transformative journey of self-discovery, self-care, and personal growth. Embrace the opportunity to create a life that is aligned with your values and aspirations, and watch as the positive changes unfold.

Salila Sukumaran: The Ayurvedic expert, shares essential kitchen herbs for optimal health [9]

The use of spices is an important part of Ayurvedic cooking, and spices have medicinal properties that promote digestive health and wellness.

The non-negotiables in an Ayurveda newbie kitchen are:

  • Turmeric: Turmeric is especially the queen of the spice rack because it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Asafoetida [10]: Its properties are antispasmodic, expectorant, stimulant, emmenagogue and vermifuge. Asafoetida has also been used as a sedative. It also thins the blood and lowers blood pressure. It is widely used in India in food and as a medicine in Indian systems of medicine like Ayurveda.
  • Coriander: Coriander prevents flatulence and controls spasmodic pain as recommended by Ayurveda. Extract of coriander seeds has a marked antispasmodic activity. Coriander contains both Cineole and linoleic acid. These elements pose antirheumatic and antiarthritic properties which help reduce skin inflammations.
  • Pepper: Black pepper is a warming spice and contributes to the pungent taste. It is excellent for pacifying Kapha, helps pacify Vata, and increases Pitta.
  • Fennel [11]: “In Ayurveda, it holds a special role in digestion. Because of its cooling and sweet properties, it specifically strengthens and warms Agni (the digestive fire) without provoking pitta. As a tridoshic herb, fennel is also balanced for vata and kapha, making it a great digestive choice for anyone to keep on hand.
  • Cumin seeds [12]: Cumin is generally considered to be a heating herb. It is said to stimulate digestion, support the immune system, and help to relieve stress.

“In Ayurveda, every meal is a chance to nourish and heal.”

Ananta Ripa Ajmera [13]

EMBRACING A LIFE OF BALANCE: AYURVEDA ON LIFE

Ayurveda’s primary objective is to foster harmony among the mind, body, and spirit. It promotes synchronization with nature’s circadian rhythms, empowering you to lead a well-balanced life, both mentally and physically. Achieving life balance commences with fine-tuning your diet and lifestyle.

UMA believes that striking a balance requires deftly juggling numerous responsibilities. These include family, work, and school. Without a carefully thought-out plan, there’s a big risk of dropping some of these metaphorical balls. Our lives are governed by natural rhythms. As creatures of habit, we thrive on patterns and routines. By incorporating UMA and Ayurvedic knowledge into your daily rituals, you can effortlessly assimilate information. This approach ensures steady progress in manageable portions.

“The material and the spiritual are but two parts of one universe and one truth. By overstressing one part or the other, man fails to achieve the balance necessary for harmonious development… Practice the art of living in this world without losing your inner peace of mind.”

Follow the path of balance to reach the inner wondrous garden of Self-Realization. — Paramahansa Yogananda

REGULAR MEALTIMES [1]

Have you ever gotten so busy you completely forgot to eat?  Probably, everyone can relate to skipping a meal now and then or eating at times that are not optimal for digestion. UMA suggests keeping our minds and bodies optimally fueled and our digestion on point as it requires eating meals at consistent times each day, breakfast (7-9 am), lunch (11 am-1 pm), and dinner (6-8 pm).[2]

REGULAR SLEEP

In Ayurveda sleep is one of the three pillars of health. Throughout the day, our bodies and brains experience wear and tear. They need sleep – seven to eight hours daily – to rejuvenate. To stay in balance with our natural rhythms, Ayurveda suggests being in bed by 10 pm and rising with the sun.

SEASONAL SHIFTS [3]

“The ayurvedic rule in treatment is to treat Vata like a flower, Pitta like a friend, and Kapha like an enemy.”

David Frawley, Yoga for your Type: An Ayurvedic Approach to Your Asana Practice [5]

To comprehend our Dosha, it is crucial to grasp the intricacies of our body and its requirements:

  • Summer can be a time of Pitta Dosha’s aggravation. Take time to cool down and relax more often.  Avoid too much heat-inducing activity and embrace a little “do nothing” attitude.
  • Fall and winter increase Vata Dosha. During this time it’s important to balance Vata with warm, moist food and seek lifestyle activities that are grounding in nature
  • Winter and spring are the Kapha Dosha season. This is a good time to lighten up the foods in your diet, amp up your exercise routine and possibly engage in an Ayurvedic cleanse.

CONNECT WITH YOUR DHARMA OR PURPOSE

The Sanskrit word “dharma” translates to your soul’s purpose. It’s the reason for your existence on this earth! Connecting with that purpose brings satisfaction and energizes you for great accomplishments. Embrace Ayurvedic study with UMA  and acknowledge your draw to Ayurvedic wisdom; reflect on why you choose this path and what it means to you. Reconnect and recommit to your purpose. Allow it to shift and manifest in unexpected ways. Have confidence that it fits into your whole life. Don’t procrastinate; start and tackle tasks in manageable ways. UMA reminds you to celebrate your achievements!

A balanced inner calmness radiates from a peaceful center. It neither craves others’ approval nor rejects others’ presence. It neither pulls towards nor pushes away. It has a reverent attitude towards life and all its inhabitants.”

SET & COMMUNICATE NEW EXPECTATIONS & BOUNDARIES WITH PEOPLE IN LIFE

“See yourself as the perfect creation that you are, but at the same time, recognize with sincere honesty, the areas of your life that are out of balance and get to work to improve and grow.”

Dashama Konah Gordon

Strong relationships are important. They will be impacted by changes in your life, but don’t fear. If you’re on a positive growth path, positivity can spread to them too. Open an upfront dialogue with people in your life. UMA promotes collaboration in overcoming challenges, establishing boundaries, and fulfilling expectations together.

“Who we are is the result of how we live and act daily. Our daily actions reflect our prime values and motivations.”

David Frawley, Yoga for your Type: An Ayurvedic Approach to Your Asana Practice[6]

REJUVENATION & SELF-CARE

When life gets busy, there’s one person that is often forgotten. You! Self-care is important to ensure you perform at your best and stay energized and focused.

To understand oneself profoundly, one needs balance. That is, one cannot abandon the world, hoping to understand oneself or be so entangled in the world that there is no occasion to comprehend oneself. There must be balance, neither renunciation nor acquiescence. This demands alertness and deep awareness. We must learn to observe our actions, thoughts, ideals, and beliefs, silently and without judgment, without interpreting them, to be able to discern their true significance.”

Jiddu Krishnamurti

PRIORITIZE & MAKE SHIFTS

Take a look at your to-do list. Being busy doesn’t always equal being productive. Are you spending too much time on what feels urgent and not enough time on what is important?  Realize it’s OK to say “no” sometimes. Let the important things be your priorities and forget about the rest, for now.

SLOW YOUR ROLL

SCHEDULE YOUR SELF-CARE

UMA strongly believes in scheduling mental self-care for a few minutes each day, whether it’s for breath work, gratitude journaling, or meditation. This will enhance your mental well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, boost positivity, build confidence, and prevent burnout. Additionally, prioritize rest, exercise, and nourishing meals to take care of your body. Make sure to schedule these activities if you tend to overlook them.

ELEGANCE IN TRADITION: HOW AYURVEDA ELEVATES DAILY ROUTINE INTO HEALTH

When we talk about self-care, we often picture face masks, bubble baths, and meditation. However, Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medical system, takes self-care to a whole new level. It’s not just about external practices, but rather a holistic approach to health that involves the mind, body, and spirit. In Ayurveda, daily rituals are carefully designed to support wellness and create a deep sense of connection with oneself.

UNDERSTANDING AYURVEDA

To fully appreciate how Ayurveda elevates everyday rituals, it’s important to first understand the principles of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that dates back over 5,000 years.

“Ayurveda is an Indian heritage and is a continuously evolving health tradition. Ayurveda reveals an interesting journey from mythology to logical, rational, and evidence-based practices.”

Traditions, rituals and science of Ayurveda [1]

Ayurveda believes that each person is unique and should be treated as an individual. Ayurveda aims to restore balance to the body and mind, using a combination of natural remedies, such as herbs, spices, and oils, as well as lifestyle practices including meditation, yoga, and dietary recommendations. In Ayurveda, health is not just the absence of disease but a state of harmony between body, mind, and spirit.

THE ART OF ABHYANGA

One of the most popular daily rituals in Ayurveda is Abhyanga, the practice of self-massage using warm oil. Abhyanga is believed to balance the body’s doshas, or energy centers, which are essential to our overall well-being. The warm oil helps to nourish the skin, calm the mind, and relieve stress and tension in the body. Abhyanga is also a luxurious way to create a sense of ritual and relaxation in our everyday lives.

Abhyanga Is the anointing of the body with oil. Often medicated and usually warm, the oil is massaged into the entire body before bathing. For thousands of years, people have used abhyanga to maintain health, benefit sleep patterns, and increase longevity. It has also been used as a medicine for certain disorders. Abhyanga can be incorporated into a routine appropriate for almost anyone.”

SPICES FOR HEALTH

Another way that Ayurveda integrates elegance into our daily lives is through the use of spices. Spices not only add delicious flavors to Ayurvedic cuisine but also offer therapeutic benefits. For instance, Turmeric [3] has anti-inflammatory properties, Ashwagandha [4] for stress management, and Ginger [5] aids digestion and soothes the stomach. By incorporating these spices into our daily meals, we can enhance our health and add a touch of sophistication to our culinary creations.

Additionally, in Ayurveda, food and herbs are considered medicine, and following a Dosha-specific [6] diet can help balance the body and prevent imbalances. The three Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and they represent different elements of nature and bodily functions.

DAILY ROUTINES FOR HEALTH

“A daily routine is necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness. Routine helps to establish balance in one’s constitution. It also regularizes a person’s biological clock, aids digestion, absorption, and assimilation, and generates self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness, and longevity.”

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of daily routines, known as “dinacharya,” to promote balance and well-being. These routines include waking up early, practicing yoga or meditation, eating at regular times, and getting enough sleep. Another popular Ayurvedic practice is tongue scraping. The tongue reflects our internal health, and scraping it removes toxins and bacteria, improving breath and digestion.

Your Ayurvedic morning routine at a glance:

  • Rise and shine: before 6:00 a.m.
  • Wash your face
  • Brush your teeth and clean your tongue
  • Gandusha (oil pulling)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Abhyanga (self-massage with oil)
  • Bath/shower
  • Yoga asanas – pranayama – meditation

These simple habits have a profound impact on our health and well-being. Ayurveda encourages us to approach these routines with intention and reverence, transforming them into elegant practices that enhance our lives. Proper digestion is seen as the foundation of good health.

INTEGRATING AYURVEDA INTO MODERN LIFE

While Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine, its principles can be easily integrated into modern life. By taking small steps such as incorporating spices into our meals, practicing self-massage, or setting a regular sleep schedule, we can enhance our health and well-being. Ayurveda reminds us to approach our daily routines with intention and appreciation, adding a touch of elegance to our everyday lives.

Moreover, daily rituals become part of an intentional and holistic approach to health. These practices may seem simple, yet they have a profound effect on our well-being. By incorporating Ayurvedic principles into our lives, we can prevent disease, manage stress, and cultivate a greater sense of connection with ourselves. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern life, it’s essential to recognize the value of traditional practices and the wisdom of our ancestors. Ayurveda is a perfect example of how elegance can be found in tradition.
