THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN: HOW VITAMIN D SUPPORTS SKIN HEALTH AND SUN PROTECTION

In the realm of skin health and sun protection, one nutrient stands out like a ray of sunshine: vitamin D. Aptly dubbed the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D plays a pivotal role in nurturing skin health while also bolstering the body’s defense against the harmful effects of UV radiation. Let’s delve into the intricate relationship between vitamin D, skin wellness, and sun protection alternatives.

SUN EXPOSURE AND VITAMIN D SYNTHESIS

Our skin serves as a remarkable factory for producing vitamin D when basked in sunlight. The magic begins when sunlight triggers the conversion of a precursor molecule, 7-dehydrocholesterol, into active vitamin D, scientifically termed calcitriol. This process sets the stage for a cascade of benefits that extend far beyond mere sun-kissed skin.

Did You Know?

Catching the sun’s rays in a sunny office or driving in a car unfortunately won’t help to obtain vitamin D as window glass completely blocks UVB ultraviolet light.

N Engl J Med. 2007

SKIN HEALTH BENEFITS

Vitamin D isn’t just a passive bystander in the realm of skincare; it’s an active participant in promoting skin cell growth, repair, and regeneration. By bolstering skin barrier function, this essential nutrient helps to lock in moisture, ward off external stressors, and maintain optimal skin health.

SUN PROTECTION

Adequate levels of vitamin D serve as a natural shield against the onslaught of UV radiation. While it’s crucial to emphasize that vitamin D doesn’t replace sunscreen, it works hand in hand with sun protection measures, enhancing the skin’s resilience to UV damage.

Did You Know?

Use of sunscreen; correctly applied sunscreen can reduce vitamin D absorption by more than 90%.

Am J Clin Nutr. 2004

SOURCES OF VITAMIN D

Sun exposure reigns supreme as the primary source of vitamin D. Just 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure a few times a week can suffice. However, dietary sources such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), fortified foods (milk, cereals), and supplements provide additional avenues for vitamin D intake. Striking a balance between safe sun exposure and sun protection is key to reaping the benefits of this vital nutrient.

RECOMMENDED AMOUNTS AND GLOBAL TRENDS

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D stands at 600 IU (15 mcg) daily for adults, with an increase to 800 IU (20 mcg) for individuals over 70 years old. Despite these guidelines, global trends indicate widespread insufficiency. Shockingly, an estimated 1 billion people worldwide grapple with inadequate levels of vitamin D, cutting across all ethnicities and age groups. [New England Journal of Medicine. 2007]

Did You Know?

Darker skin tones possess elevated levels of the pigment melanin, which functions as a form of inherent sun protection.

Nutrients. 2021

VITAMIN D AND HEALTH

The intrigue surrounding vitamin D extends far beyond skin deep. Research illuminates its potential role in reducing cancer cell growth, controlling infections, and curbing inflammation. While observational studies tout the benefits of ample vitamin D levels in combating various diseases, clinical trials are yet to provide definitive answers. [JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute. 2019 Feb 1]

BRIEF INSIGHTS: NATURAL APPLICABLE SUN PROTECTION ALTERNATIVES

When it comes to sun protection, embracing natural alternatives can augment the efficacy of traditional sunscreen. Ingredients like coconut oil, zinc oxide, and shea butter offer varying degrees of sun protection while nourishing the skin. However, it’s essential to recognize that these alternatives may not offer equivalent protection to commercial sunscreens, making them best suited as supplementary measures alongside protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours.

ORAL SUN-SUPPLEMENTS:

Polypodium Leucotomos

Derived from a South American fern, Polypodium leucotomos exhibits clinical benefits in skin conditions and shows promise in mitigating UV-induced damage. Research suggests that 240 mg taken twice daily for 60 days reduces sunburn episodes. [N Engl J Med. 2015], [J Clin Aesthet Dermatol. 2015]

Beta-Carotene

Beta-carotene, a plant-derived antioxidant, protects against UV-induced erythema and delays the onset of new skin cancers. However, it should complement, not replace, topical sunscreen use. [J Nutr. 2003], [Am J Clin Nutr. 2012]

Astaxanthin

Derived from algae and marine organisms, astaxanthin combats oxidative stress induced by UV radiation, making it a potent ally in skin protection. [Marine Drugs, 2014]

Vitamin-E Rich Foods

Nicotinamide/Niacinamide

Nicotinamide, a precursor to ATP production, safeguards cellular energy and facilitates DNA repair. Studies indicate its efficacy in reducing the incidence of skin cancers when taken regularly. [Am Health Drug Benefits. 2015]

Found in nuts, spinach, and oils, Vitamin E scavenges free radicals, slows collagenase activity, and reduces skin aging, complementing sun protection measures. [Indian Dermatol Online J. 2016]

SIGNS OF DEFICIENCY AND TOXICITY

Vitamin D deficiency poses a significant health concern, leading to conditions like rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Conversely, toxicity, though rare, can occur from excessive supplementation, manifesting as symptoms ranging from anorexia to irregular heartbeats.

In essence, the synergy between vitamin D, skin health, and sun protection underscores the importance of nurturing our skin from within while adopting prudent sun safety practices. By embracing a holistic approach that encompasses both internal nourishment and external safeguards, we can bask in the radiance of healthy, sun-kissed skin while safeguarding against the harsh realities of UV exposure.

Remember, your skin deserves the tender care of the sun and the shield of protection against its potent rays. Strike the perfect balance, and let your skin glow with vitality under the nurturing embrace of vitamin D.

INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: ROLE OF SALICYLIC ACID FROM ACNE TO ANTI-AGING

Salicylic acid has long held its place as a skincare superhero, standing firm in countless routines for decades. But what exactly makes it so essential, and how can it revolutionize your skincare journey? In this exploration, we’ll dive into the depths of salicylic acid’s prowess, uncovering its role in combatting acne, fostering anti-aging effects, and its overall significance as a skincare ingredient.

INSIGHTS FROM CLINICAL RESEARCH ON SALICYLIC ACID’S MERITS

The efficacy of salicylic acid in skincare has been the subject of extensive scrutiny. Here’s a glimpse into some notable revelations:

Acne Alleviation

One of salicylic acid’s primary claims to fame lies in its unparalleled efficacy against acne. With its ability to penetrate deep into pores, this beta hydroxy acid (BHA) works wonders in unclogging pores, dissolving sebum, and banishing acne-causing bacteria.

A comprehensive review in the esteemed Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (2017) extols salicylic acid’s virtues as a potent comedolytic agent, proficient in dissolving comedones – the notorious blackheads and whiteheads. It cites evidence showcasing salicylic acid’s efficacy, both in solo endeavors and in synergy with fellow acne warriors [1], [2].

Anti-Aging Elixir

Salicylic acid’s exfoliative finesse isn’t confined to acne terrain alone. A study in the International Journal of Dermatology (2009) delved into the collaborative potential of glycolic acid (AHA) and salicylic acid (BHA) on human skin. As an exfoliant, salicylic acid promotes cellular turnover, encouraging the skin to shed old, damaged cells and reveal newer, healthier ones beneath. This rejuvenating process not only helps to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but also enhances the skin’s overall texture and tone, imparting a youthful, luminous complexion. [3], [4], [5]

EXFOLIATING MARVEL: SALICYLIC ACID’S INTRICATE MECHANISM

Nestled within the realm of beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), salicylic acid boasts a unique prowess. Unlike its alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) counterparts that work primarily on the skin’s surface, BHAs possess a penetrating power that reaches deep into oil glands, purging them of dead skin cells from within the pores. This dynamic process serves multiple purposes:

Clog Prevention:

Enlarged pores are a common skincare concern, often contributing to a lackluster complexion. Salicylic acid comes to the rescue by clearing excess oil and debris deep within pores, thereby minimizing their size. A 2001 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science highlighted salicylic acid’s efficacy in reducing pore size, resulting in a smoother and more refined appearance. By sweeping away dead skin cells, salicylic acid prevents their accumulation and subsequent pore blockage, which is a common trigger for acne eruptions. [6]

Inflammation Reduction:

Salicylic acid’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable ally in combating acne and other inflammatory conditions. A study published in Dermatologic Therapy in 2014 demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing redness and inflammation associated with acne vulgaris. With its inherent anti-inflammatory properties, salicylic acid acts as a soothing balm, alleviating the redness and discomfort often experienced during acne flare-ups. [7]

Cellular Revival:

Salicylic acid penetrates deep into pores, surpassing the capabilities of AHAs, and loosens the bonds between dead skin cells. This promotes gentle yet thorough exfoliation, resulting in smoother and brighter skin. Studies, such as one published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2009, have validated salicylic acid’s exfoliating prowess. By clearing away old skin cells, salicylic acid stimulates the emergence of fresh, vibrant skin cells, unveiling a complexion that radiates with newfound luminosity. [8]

DID YOU KNOW?

For individuals suffering from psoriasis, salicylic acid offers relief by reducing scaling and improving the appearance of psoriatic plaques. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2011 demonstrated salicylic acid’s effectiveness in managing psoriasis symptoms. [9]

Reduces Blackheads and Whiteheads:

Salicylic acid’s comedolytic properties make it effective in preventing the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. By dissolving the “glue” that traps dead skin cells and sebum within pores, salicylic acid helps keep the pores clear. Research published in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology in 2014 supported its effectiveness in treating comedones. [10]

DID YOU KNOW?

Salicylic acid proves to be effective in combating dandruff when used in shampoos. Studies, such as one published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2002, have demonstrated the effectiveness of salicylic acid-containing shampoos in reducing dandruff. [11]

SALICYLIC ACID: A CHAMELEON IN THE SKINCARE PANTHEON

From cleansers to toners, serums to masks, salicylic acid permeates an array of skincare formulations. The optimal concentration hinges upon your skin’s sensitivity and specific exigencies. Commencing with a modest dosage and ascending gradually as your skin acclimatizes is advisable. [12]

A Gentle Reminder:

While salicylic acid is generally amicable to most skin types, it’s not impervious to causing dryness and irritation, particularly among the sensitive-skinned populace. Prioritize a patch test before ushering any new product into your regimen. Should any discomfort ensue, cease usage promptly and seek counsel from a dermatological authority.

Sun Protection: Salicylic acid can increase sun sensitivity. Using sunscreen daily is crucial!

Salicylic acid emerges as a multifaceted gem in the skincare treasury, wielding its prowess across a myriad of skin concerns. Whether combating acne eruptions or orchestrating a youthful revival, salicylic acid stands as a stalwart ally in your skincare odyssey. However, prudent selection of concentration and a gradual assimilation into your routine are paramount to sidestep potential pitfalls.

INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT: SUGARCANE- THE NATURAL AHA REVOLUTIONIZING CLEANSER

In the ever-evolving realm of skincare, the search for natural yet effective ingredients remains a priority for many. Among the myriad options, sugarcane emerges as a powerhouse, offering a natural Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) called glycolic acid. This unassuming plant extract holds the potential to revolutionize cleansers, offering a gentle yet profound exfoliation experience that unveils radiant, rejuvenated skin. Let’s delve into the scientific intricacies of sugarcane extract and its transformative effects on skincare.

UNDERSTANDING SUGARCANE EXTRACT

Derived from the Saccharum Officinarum plant, sugarcane extract serves as a rich source of glycolic acid, a type of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). AHAs, including glycolic acid, are naturally occurring compounds found in various sources such as fruits (Citric acid, malic acid), sour milk (Lactic acid), and sugarcane. These AHAs play a crucial role in skin care by promoting exfoliation, cell turnover, and collagen synthesis. [1]

DID YOU KNOW?

AHAs are a group of water-soluble acids that help exfoliate the skin by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This allows for new, healthier skin cells to come to the surface, resulting in a brighter, more even-toned complexion.

THE POWER OF GLYCOLIC ACID

Glycolic acid, the primary component of sugarcane extract, serves as a potent exfoliant due to its small molecular size. This characteristic enables it to penetrate the skin deeply and rapidly, facilitating the removal of dead skin cells and revealing a smoother, more luminous complexion. By promoting cellular turnover, glycolic acid helps unclog pores, refine skin texture, and improve overall skin tone.

SKIN BENEFITS OF SUGARCANE EXTRACT

The benefits of sugarcane extract extend beyond exfoliation. Its rich content of glycolic acid stimulates collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, sugarcane extract acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to the skin and enhancing hydration levels. This dual-action approach makes it an ideal ingredient for addressing various skin concerns, including dullness, congestion, and signs of aging. [3]

THE POWER OF NATURAL HUMECTANTS

Fine Lines and Wrinkles:

Sugarcane extract improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by removing dead skin cells, smoothing the skin’s surface, and making imperfections less noticeable. [4]

Hyperpigmentation Reduction:

Sugarcane extract fades dark spots caused by hyperpigmentation by lightening the skin and promoting cell turnover, resulting in a more even complexion.

Collagen Boosting:

Sugarcane extract stimulates collagen production, a protein crucial for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. This boost in collagen helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.

Natural and Skin-Friendly:

Sugarcane extract is a natural ingredient, making it less likely to irritate compared to some synthetic ingredients, ensuring gentle yet effective skincare.

Vegan Source:

Derived from plants, sugarcane extract is a vegan ingredient, making it suitable for individuals adhering to a vegan lifestyle. [5]

Skin Texture Improvement:

Sugarcane extract smooths rough and uneven skin texture by effectively removing dead skin cells, revealing a smoother and softer skin surface.

Humectant Properties:

As a humectant, sugarcane extract attracts and retains moisture in the skin, promoting hydration and plumpness for a healthier complexion.

Biodegradability:

Sugarcane extract is biodegradable, meaning it naturally breaks down in the environment, contributing to sustainability and eco-friendliness in skincare formulations.

APPLICATION IN SKINCARE FORMULATIONS

The versatility of sugarcane extract is exemplified in its incorporation into skincare formulations, such as the newly launched UMA Deeply Clarifying Purify & Balance Gel Cleanser. Paired with complementary ingredients like clove, tea tree oil, and lemon, sugarcane extract synergistically enhances the efficacy of the cleanser. Furthermore, its presence alongside scientifically proven components like salicylic acid underscores its role in balancing the AHA content within the formula.

It is important to note that sugarcane extract, like any AHA, can increase sun sensitivity. Be sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days, when using sugarcane extract in your skincare routine.

SCIENTIFIC VALIDATION & TRADITIONAL WISDOM

While modern research continues to uncover the therapeutic properties of sugarcane extract, its historical use in Ayurvedic medicine attests to its longstanding efficacy. Traditional remedies harness the beneficial properties of sugarcane for various skincare concerns, corroborating its relevance in contemporary skincare formulations.

In the realm of skincare, sugarcane extract emerges as a natural AHA powerhouse, offering a myriad of benefits for skin health and rejuvenation. With its rich content of glycolic acid and complementary properties, sugarcane extract revitalizes the complexion, promoting exfoliation, hydration, and collagen synthesis. As evidenced by its integration into innovative skincare formulations, sugarcane extract exemplifies the harmonious blend of scientific advancement and traditional wisdom in the pursuit of radiant, youthful skin.

In this exploration, we delve into the science behind UMA’s deeply clarifying skincare routine and unveil what truly distinguishes it from the rest.

1

THE FOUNDATION OF RADIANCE

Embarking on the journey to a clearer complexion begins with the foundational step of cleansing. UMA’s Deeply Clarifying Neem Charcoal Cleanser isn’t just your average cleanser; it’s a powerhouse enriched with natural ingredients that gently cleanse, exfoliate, balance, and nourish the skin. At its core lies the potent combination of neem and charcoal, working synergistically to rid the skin of impurities and toxins while reducing inflammation and promoting hydration.

SCIENCE BEHIND THE CLEANSER: Neem, hailed in Ayurveda for its antimicrobial properties, banishes bacteria, while turmeric lends its anti-inflammatory prowess to calm and heal. With a blend of clays, oat, and botanical extracts, this cleanser goes beyond surface cleansing, drawing out impurities from within for a brighter, more radiant complexion.

“However, encouraging data suggest that neem is consistently more effective at prohibiting bacterial growth and at targeting biofilm-grown cells than many other herbal extracts.”

[Noor, 2011]

“From the findings, the results of this research work could suggest that plant extract of neem (Azadirachta Indica) and Tumeric (Curcumin longa) possess antimicrobial properties highly effective in inhibiting the growth of some enteric pathogens in humans.”

[academicjournals.org, 2015; Researchgate.net 2010]

HOW TO USE: For 1-2 times daily cleansing, wet your face thoroughly and apply a small amount (1.5 tbsp) of cleanser in gentle circular motions for 30-45 seconds. Rinse off with cold water and pat dry. For a deeper exfoliation, leave the cleanser on to dry for 2-3 minutes before sloughing it off and rinsing with water.

2

BALANCING ACT

Moving on to toning, the UMA’ Deeply Clarifying Aloe Alum Toner is a revelation in itself. Infused with aloe, tea tree, and rose water, this toner regulates oil production, combats blemishes, and provides essential hydration and protection to the skin. With alum fortifying the skin’s natural barrier and aloe ensuring adequate moisture, this toner primes the skin for the next steps in your skincare routine.

SCIENCE BEHIND THE TONER: Tea tree, revered for its infection-fighting abilities, joins forces with mint to cool and balance the skin. Cinnamon steps in to regulate sebum production, while tomato delivers a surge of Vitamin C for protection and healing.

“Employed largely for its antimicrobial properties, Tea Tree Oil is incorporated as the active ingredient in many topical formulations used to treat cutaneous infections.”

[Clin Microbiol Rev. 2006]

“The antioxidant compounds predominately present in tomatoes consist of several different types of carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and phenolic compounds that confer their antioxidant activities by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protecting the cell membrane against lipid peroxidation.”

[J.foodchem.2016, Molecules. 2020]

HOW TO USE: After cleansing, apply the toner to the skin using a cotton pad in gentle circular motions.

[ J. Cosmet. Dermatol. 2019]

“juniper berry also has benefits when used in natural skincare. The oil’s antiseptic and astringent properties make it a valuable addition to facial treatment formulations, particularly for those tending towards oily or blemish-prone skin.”

[Stjepan Pepeljnjak 1, Ivan Kosalec, Zdenka Kalodera, Nikola Blazević]

HOW TO USE: Apply the treatment to affected areas morning and evening after cleansing, or as needed throughout the day.

4

NOURISHING ELIXIR

With a blend of clarifying ingredients like tea tree, orange, and grapeseed, this face oil brings clarity and radiance to your complexion without clogging pores or causing breakouts.

SCIENCE BEHIND THE FACE OIL: Clove essential oil targets blemish-causing impurities, while tea tree oil balances the skin. Lavender and clary sage oils regulate oiliness and prevent over-drying, making this face oil an ideal choice for oily or combination skin types.

“Linalyl acetate and linalool are the two main components of lavender essential oil and have demonstrated antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals and decreasing oxidative stress”

[ J. Supercrit. Fluids. 2012]

HOW TO USE: Massage a few drops(2-3) between your palms and pat onto your face, neck, and décolletage as the final step in your skincare routine.

5

THE ULTIMATE STEP

REJUVENATE YOUR BODY & MIND WITH HIBISCUS WELLNESS

Bright, sweet and aromatic hibiscus is more than just a pretty flower: it’s also a beauty and wellness powerhouse that boasts a number of benefits for the skin, hair, heart, kidneys and more. While there are over 300 different types of hibiscus, Hibiscus sabdariffa is the one you’re most likely to find in hibiscus tea, and this particular species is a revered herb in Ayurvedic tradition.

In Ayurveda, hibiscus is believed to have a cooling effect due to its sweet and astringent properties. (This makes it an especially useful ingredient for staying cool during Pitta season!) It is a particularly beneficial herb for Pittas and Kaphas, though Vatas should consume it in moderation. Hibiscus is also traditionally associated with the god Ganesha, known as the “destroyer of all obstacles,” whose energy resides in the lower parts of the body. As such, hibiscus is renowned for its benefits to the reproductive system and kidneys.

The many benefits of hibiscus extend beyond this region of the body, as well. In Ayurveda, hibiscus is also lauded for its anti-aging qualities, its heart-boosting properties and more.

BENEFITS OF HIBISCUS

1

Combats Inflammation

Thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, hibiscus is an effective tool for combating and alleviating inflammation. For example, it is believed to clear up congestion in the lymphatic system and cleanse the blood, leading to healthy circulation. Given that inflammation can lead to more serious conditions like cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease, hibiscus may play a beneficial role in maintaining one’s overall health.

2

Boosts Hair Growth

Hibiscus has long been used in Ayurvedic tradition as a hair growth tonic. When applied to the scalp, Vitamin C-rich hibiscus helps to stimulate hair follicles and boost the nutrients and blood transmitted to the hair, which in turn promotes hair growth and prevents premature graying. As a result, there are many natural hair and scalp products that incorporate hibiscus. Our UMA Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil is one of them: harnessing clarifying, strengthening botanicals like hibiscus, grapefruit and Indian gooseberry, this lightweight oil provides essential nourishment, hydration and rejuvenation. If you want to learn more about how to give your scalp a full detox, check out our blog here.

3

Lowers Blood Pressure

As several studies have demonstrated, hibiscus is also a potent ingredient for lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, thanks to its diuretic and blood-thinning properties. Throughout these studies, participants drank hibiscus tea—as it turns out, such a simple and soothing ritual can have major benefits for our health.

Promotes Radiant, Clear Skin

Multiple studies have shown that hibiscus contains potent antioxidant properties. This means that hibiscus is a powerful tool for combating free radical damage, which can cause signs of aging like wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, unevenness and more. By fighting free radicals, hibiscus can help promote clear, bright and even skin. Our UMA Ultimate Brightening Rose Powder Cleanser incorporates hibiscus’s anti-aging powers—alongside rose, chamomile and walnut—for a formula that targets dryness and unevenness, resulting in bright, clear and youthful-looking skin.

Boosts Liver Health

As mentioned earlier, Ayurveda states that hibiscus is dominant in the lower parts of the body, including the liver. Our liver plays many important roles in the body, which include regulating the body’s fat storage, pH levels and blood pressure; a healthy liver is key to a healthy life. Several studies have shown that hibiscus can combat the accumulation of liver fat, reduce liver damage and promote overall liver health.

However, these studies utilize hibiscus extract rather than tea, so more research is needed to see if the everyday consumption of hibiscus tea is just as effectiveAs we can see, hibiscus offers a number of extraordinary benefits on our health, skin, hair and more. To top it off, reaping these benefits can be as simple as drinking hibiscus tea on a regular basis, or using skin and hair products that incorporate hibiscus’s physical rejuvenation and mental rejuvenation powers.

THE VERSATILITY OF COCONUT OIL: MORE THAN JUST SKINCARE

As temperatures rise and summer swells, coconut water is undoubtedly one of the most popular drink options for its sweet, refreshing taste. However, did you know that this refreshing, buoyant fruit can also be transformed into an oil that has numerous health and beauty benefits? Now, we’ve talked about how we don’t love coconut oil as a facial moisturizer or facial oil due to its high comedogenicity – but that doesn’t mean aren’t other incredible uses for it! Here, we break down the basics of this amazing, versatile oil to demonstrate why it is a must-have part of your daily routine.

1

FOR CONDITIONING AND STRENGTHENING YOUR HAIR

Next time you take a shower, bring your coconut oil with you! Coconut oil has a variety of beneficial properties for your hair, and its application is so simple that you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried it out sooner. Here are three ways you can use coconut oil to moisturize, condition, and strengthen your hair.

As a rinse-off conditioner:

To use coconut oil as a rinse-off conditioner, first warm up some coconut oil to melt it into liquid form. Then, apply a teaspoon or two throughout your hair—but avoid the scalp area to prevent clogging. Comb through your hair to distribute the oil evenly and coat all the strands. Leave it in for at least 15 minutes, or even overnight for deeper conditioning. Shampoo off with warm water. Do note that you may have to shampoo your hair repeatedly to get all the oil out.

As a leave-in conditioner:

Coconut oil can also double as a leave-in conditioner! To use, apply a small amount to your hair after your regular conditioner. It will act as an occlusive and help lock the conditioner into your hair, retaining moisture for silky smooth locks. You can also use it to tame baby hairs and flyaways for a more sleek and put-together look.

As a protectant against chlorine:

If you’re an avid swimmer, you’re definitely no stranger to rough, chlorine-damaged hair. To avoid this the next time you head to the pool, use coconut oil as a protectant! To use, apply it before swimming to create a barrier between your hair and the harsh water.

2

FOR CLEANSING AND HIGHLIGHTING YOUR SKIN

If you are a fan of cleansing oils, balms, or highlighters, you will be pleased to find out that you can use coconut oil in their place. Here are a few different ways you can use coconut oil to enhance, cleanse, and beautify your skin.

As a makeup-removing cleanser:

You can use coconut oil as a first cleanser in the double-cleansing method to remove makeup and sunscreen. A powerful cleanser, it removes even the most stubborn makeup—including waterproof mascara and eyeliner—with ease. Before following up with a second cleanser, we suggest using a washcloth after application to remove the oil in order to prevent clogging. A word of caution: coconut oil is comedogenic, which means that it clogs pores, so those with acne-prone skin should exercise care when applying it to the face.

3

FOR MOISTURIZING AND EXFOLIATING YOUR BODY

Because coconut oil has a lightweight consistency, it sinks into the skin quickly, allowing it to effectively moisturize and refresh the body. Incorporate coconut oil into your general skincare routine to reap its moisturizing, exfoliating, and softening benefits.

As a moisturizer:

Used in combination with lighter ingredients, coconut oil makes an excellent moisturizer. We recommend finding a moisturizer that uses coconut oil alongside other soothing elements, like grapeseed oil and lavender oil for calming benefits, or peppermint oil for energizing benefits. You can also create a DIY moisturizer by combining several essential oils in this way. To use, massage your chosen moisturizer into your skin after showering, concentrating on the elbows, feet, and hands. Coconut oil will provide relief for hard and cracked elbows and feet, helping to soften and return them to a healthy state.

As an exfoliating DIY scrub:

You can also use coconut oil to whip up a simple, yet powerful DIY body scrub. Simply add salt or sugar and mix to your desired consistency, and there you have it—an instant, affordable, and effective exfoliant. Gently rub the mixture against your body or lips to slough away dead skin cells. When applied to the lips, you can follow up this treatment with a light layer of coconut oil to seal in the moisture.

As a shaving cream:

If you didn’t think all of these applications were enough, you can even use coconut oil as a shaving cream! To use, apply a layer of coconut oil to the skin you’d like to shave. The oil will moisturize your skin, enabling the razor to glide over your legs effortlessly. Fearful of the occasional razor cut? With coconut oil, you don’t have to be! Because the oil lubricates the razor, the chances of any accidental nicks and cuts are reduced. You won’t have to worry about applying moisturizer post-shave, either, because your legs will already be well-moisturized.

4

FOR BUFFING UP YOUR ORAL HEALTH

Coconut oil can also provide a host of benefits for your oral health, as it is one of the most commonly used oils in the ancient Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling. It is favored over other vegetable oils for its pleasant taste and lauric acid content, which helps whiten teeth. In a nutshell, oil pulling helps to detoxify the body, promoting better oral health, fresher breath, and general wellness. If you would like to learn more about oil pulling, we have a variety of resources on our blog, including here and here. UMA also recently released our own Pure Detox Oil Pulling Treatment that you can use as an effective and simple introduction to oil pulling!

How to oil pull: Before brushing your teeth in the morning, gently swish 1-2 tablespoons of oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. You can continue with your daily routine as you do this, whether you’re taking a shower or preparing breakfast. Make sure the oil comes into contact with all areas of the gums and the sides of the cheeks. When you’re finished, spit the oil into a trash can, rinse your mouth, and brush your teeth as you normally would. Use a tongue scraper after brushing your teeth to detoxify your mouth even further.

Pro Tip:Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it is ideal to melt it beforehand for an easier application. Your first instinct is probably to head to the microwave, but don’t! Avoid microwaving or heating your coconut oil directly because this can potentially deplete its nutrients. Instead, use the “double boil” method. Fill a bowl with hot water, then sit the jar of oil into the bowl. It will soon turn from a white solid into a clear, transparent liquid.

Have you been convinced to head out and grab a jar of coconut oil yet? Before you do, here’s one last tip: you do not need to buy an expensive coconut oil that is marketed for skin or hair. The coconut oil that you find in the food aisles of the grocery store will work just as well, if not better! Just make sure to pick a cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil to reap the maximum benefits.

SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON INGREDIENTS: TURMERIC AND ROSE

A HERB BEYOND THE KITCHEN TOP: TURMERIC

Turmeric, with its vibrant yellow-orange color, has been revered for centuries due to its healing properties and cosmetic benefits. In this blog post, we will delve into the myriad ways in which turmeric can benefit your skin. From bestowing a natural glow to aiding in acne scarring, turmeric offers a wide range of potential advantages.

Unlocking the Benefits of Turmeric for Skin:

Natural Glow:

Turmeric boasts antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components that can enhance the radiance and luster of your skin. You can create a homemade turmeric face mask by combining small amounts of Greek yogurt, honey, and turmeric. Apply this mask to your face, leave it on for 15 minutes, and then rinse it off with water.

Psoriasis Relief:

Turmeric’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities may help mitigate flares and other symptoms of psoriasis. It can be used as a supplement or incorporated into your diet. Consult a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dosage.

Acne Scarring:

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties specifically target pores and soothe the skin, potentially reducing acne breakouts and resulting scars. Its ability to diminish scarring makes it a promising option for clearing up acne breakouts.

Scabies Treatment:

A combination of turmeric and neem has demonstrated efficacy in treating scabies, a condition caused by microscopic mites that leave a rash on the skin.

Wound Healing:

In India, there is an age-old tradition of using turmeric powder to stop bleeding and promote healing in open wounds. The presence of curcumin in turmeric aids in wound healing by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. It helps accelerate the healing process of skin wounds. For best outcomes, it is advisable to apply curcumin as part of an optimized formula.

Turmeric for skin

Potential for Other Dermatological Conditions:

While further research is necessary, turmeric exhibits potential in alleviating other skin conditions such as eczema, alopecia, and lichen planus

UMA RECOMMENDS:

Usage and Precautions:

  • Dosage and Absorption: Turmeric has low bioavailability, meaning that the body absorbs only a small amount of it. Exercise caution to avoid excessive consumption and observe how your body reacts before increasing the dosage. Consult your doctor if you are taking other medications.
  • Skin Staining and Allergic Reactions: Turmeric can temporarily stain the skin and may cause irritation, redness, and swelling if you are allergic. Before applying it to your face, perform a patch test on your forearm. If you are allergic to turmeric as a spice in food, refrain from using it.

Masking for the Turmeric glow:

The key to creating a turmeric face mask is to combine turmeric powder or extract with a thickening agent to form a paste. The ingredients may vary depending on your skin concern:

  • For acne and antibacterial concerns, mix turmeric with warm water and honey.
  • For hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, blend turmeric with yogurt and lemon juice for added nourishment and brightening effects.
  • For irritation, combine turmeric extract with aloe vera gel to naturally soothe the skin.
  • For antioxidant power, simply mix turmeric with water. You may add a small amount of almond or rice flour to thicken the mask for easier application.

Regardless of the recipe you choose, leave the mask on for around 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow up with your preferred toner, serum, and moisturizer. Avoid leaving the mask on overnight, as turmeric may stain lighter skin tones. If staining occurs, try washing your face with milk. Use the mask up to 2-3 times per week.

THE TIMELESS SKINCARE ELIXIR: ROSE

Roses are not merely symbols of love and beauty; they have played a crucial role in skincare rituals across cultures. Cleopatra’s beauty regime famously included roses, emphasizing their timeless appeal and effectiveness. Beyond their enchanting aroma, roses are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, offering a holistic approach to skin health.

Unveiling the Skin Benefits of Rose:

Preventing Premature Aging:

Abundant in antioxidants like vitamin C, roses combat free radicals and oxidative stress, neutralizing factors that hasten skin aging. Using rose-based products can strengthen skin cells, promoting longevity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Soothing Skin Redness and Irritation:

The anti-inflammatory properties of roses aid in calming skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. Regular use of rose water or rose-infused products can reduce redness and promote a balanced, even skin tone.

Boosting Collagen Production:

Essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness, collagen production is enhanced by the vitamins A and C found in roses. This not only aids in skin repair but also helps maintain a youthful and vibrant complexion.

Improving Skin Tone and Texture:

Rose products, thanks to their vitamin C content, can lighten hyperpigmentation and scars. Regular use can lead to a brighter, more even skin tone and smoother texture.

Deep Moisturization:

Rose’s natural oils possess exceptional moisturizing capabilities, making it an ideal remedy for dry skin. These oils effectively lock in moisture without clogging pores, ensuring supple and hydrated skin throughout the day.

Regulating Sebum Production:

Rose offers a natural solution for those with oily skin. Its astringent properties help tighten pores and balance sebum production, resulting in a clearer and matte complexion.

Rose also holds potential benefits in treating various conditions:

  1. Hyperacidity: Increased stomach acid levels can cause digestion issues. Regular intake of rose powder, known for its cooling properties, can help reduce acid levels and improve digestion. It acts as an appetizer, eliminating toxins and controlling hyperacidity. To alleviate hyperacidity, take 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of rose powder with mishri before lunch and dinner.
  2. Diarrhea: Diarrhea, caused by contaminated food or weak digestion, can be managed with rose powder. Its absorbent properties aid in nutrient absorption and help control loose motions. To alleviate diarrhea, take 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of rose powder with mishri before lunch and dinner.
  3. Menorrhagia: Excessive menstrual bleeding, known as raktapradar, is often caused by imbalanced pitta dosha. Rose helps regulate pitta dosha due to its cold and astringent properties. To manage heavy menstrual bleeding, consume 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of gulkand (rose petal jam) with water before lunch and dinner.
  4. Acne & Pimples: Rose, with its astringent and cooling properties, is beneficial for acne-prone skin. It helps remove excess oil and dirt, preventing clogged pores. By balancing aggravated pitta, rose helps prevent acne and pimples. For acne management, apply 4-5 drops of rosewater on a cotton ball and gently wipe your face before bedtime.
  5. Eye Strain: Rosewater provides instant relief from eye strain due to its healing and cooling properties. Soak two clean cotton balls in rosewater and place them on your eyes for 15 minutes. Alternatively, splash water mixed with a few drops of rosewater to refresh tired eyes.

Incorporating Rose into Your Skincare Routine

  • Rose Water Toning: After cleansing, spritz rose water on your face to tone and prepare your skin for moisturizing. This not only refreshes the skin but also tightens pores and balances pH levels.
  • Rosehip Oil for Anti-Aging: Apply a few drops of rosehip oil at night to target signs of aging. Rich in retinol and vitamin C, it promotes cell turnover and collagen production.
  • Rose-Infused Masks and Scrubs: Whether DIY or store-bought, rose-infused masks, and scrubs exfoliate dead skin cells and deliver intensive moisture, revealing radiant and refreshed skin.
  • Rose Petals in Baths: For a luxurious spa-like experience, add rose petals to your bath. Not only does this soothe the skin, but it also relaxes the mind.

UMA RECOMMENDS:

Precautions and Recommendations

While roses are generally safe for all skin types, it’s important to:

  • Patch Test: Always perform a patch test before trying a new rose-based product, especially if you have sensitive skin.
  • Pure and Organic: Opt for products that use pure, organic rose ingredients to avoid skin irritation from pesticides and chemicals.

Conclusion: Rose and Turmeric – The Ultimate Skin Allies

Turmeric offers numerous benefits for the skin, including natural radiance, wound healing, relief for psoriasis, reduction of acne scarring, and treatment for certain skin conditions like scabies. Whereas, Rose provides profound benefits for the skin, such as anti-aging, moisturizing, soothing, and brightening effects. By incorporating rose into your skincare regimen, you embrace a legacy of beauty and well-being that has withstood the test of time, nourishing and caring for your skin.

*However, it’s important to use caution, considering dosage, potential allergies, and interactions with medications. Always consult a healthcare professional before adding turmeric to your skincare routine.
