Is Your Phone Affecting Your Hormones? A Modern Ayurvedic View
blue light exposure from phone affecting sleep and hormones

We check our phones before we take a full breath in the morning. Before sunlight touches our skin. Before our nervous system has fully awakened.

It feels harmless — but constant digital stimulation and blue light exposure may be influencing hormonal balance more than we realize.

Ayurveda teaches that the body thrives on rhythm. Hormones depend on sleep cycles, light exposure, digestion, and nervous system stability. When rhythm is disturbed repeatedly, imbalance begins quietly.

How Blue Light Exposure Disrupts Hormones

Modern research links excessive screen use to:

  • Suppressed melatonin production
  • Elevated evening cortisol
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Increased stress response

When sleep is affected, so are:

  • Reproductive hormones
  • Insulin regulation
  • Skin repair cycles

The body does not separate “mental stress” from “physical stress.” It responds to both the same way. Blue light emitted from phones, especially at night, signals wakefulness to the brain and can delay the body’s natural hormonal repair cycle.

The Ayurvedic Explanation

From an Ayurvedic lens, excessive stimulation aggravates:

Vata — governing the nervous system and movement
Pitta — governing metabolism and hormonal transformation

When Vata is overstimulated:

  • Sleep becomes lighter
  • Anxiety increases
  • Cycles may become irregular

When Pitta is overactivated at night:

  • Internal heat rises
  • Inflammation increases
  • Skin sensitivity worsens

Ayurveda also speaks of Ojas — the essence of vitality and reproductive strength. Constant stimulation slowly depletes this reserve.

Simple Shifts That Support Balance

You don’t need extreme detoxes. Small boundaries are powerful:

  • No phone for 30 minutes after waking
  • No screens 60 minutes before bed
  • Use warm light settings after sunset
  • Apply face oil before sleep to calm the nervous system

Sometimes hormone balance begins with reducing input — not adding more supplements.

The Takeaway

Your body is designed for cycles — light and dark, activity and rest, stimulation and stillness.

When digital noise fills every space, rhythm fades.

Ayurveda reminds us: balance is not created through intensity. It is restored through consistency.

Sometimes, the most powerful shift is simply choosing when to disconnect.

EMBRACING A LIFE OF BALANCE: AYURVEDA ON LIFE

Ayurveda’s primary objective is to foster harmony among the mind, body, and spirit. It promotes synchronization with nature’s circadian rhythms, empowering you to lead a well-balanced life, both mentally and physically. Achieving life balance commences with fine-tuning your diet and lifestyle.

UMA believes that striking a balance requires deftly juggling numerous responsibilities. These include family, work, and school. Without a carefully thought-out plan, there’s a big risk of dropping some of these metaphorical balls. Our lives are governed by natural rhythms. As creatures of habit, we thrive on patterns and routines. By incorporating UMA and Ayurvedic knowledge into your daily rituals, you can effortlessly assimilate information. This approach ensures steady progress in manageable portions.

“The material and the spiritual are but two parts of one universe and one truth. By overstressing one part or the other, man fails to achieve the balance necessary for harmonious development… Practice the art of living in this world without losing your inner peace of mind.”

Follow the path of balance to reach the inner wondrous garden of Self-Realization. — Paramahansa Yogananda

REGULAR MEALTIMES [1]

Have you ever gotten so busy you completely forgot to eat?  Probably, everyone can relate to skipping a meal now and then or eating at times that are not optimal for digestion. UMA suggests keeping our minds and bodies optimally fueled and our digestion on point as it requires eating meals at consistent times each day, breakfast (7-9 am), lunch (11 am-1 pm), and dinner (6-8 pm).[2]

REGULAR SLEEP

In Ayurveda sleep is one of the three pillars of health. Throughout the day, our bodies and brains experience wear and tear. They need sleep – seven to eight hours daily – to rejuvenate. To stay in balance with our natural rhythms, Ayurveda suggests being in bed by 10 pm and rising with the sun.

SEASONAL SHIFTS [3]

“The ayurvedic rule in treatment is to treat Vata like a flower, Pitta like a friend, and Kapha like an enemy.”

David Frawley, Yoga for your Type: An Ayurvedic Approach to Your Asana Practice [5]

To comprehend our Dosha, it is crucial to grasp the intricacies of our body and its requirements:

  • Summer can be a time of Pitta Dosha’s aggravation. Take time to cool down and relax more often.  Avoid too much heat-inducing activity and embrace a little “do nothing” attitude.
  • Fall and winter increase Vata Dosha. During this time it’s important to balance Vata with warm, moist food and seek lifestyle activities that are grounding in nature
  • Winter and spring are the Kapha Dosha season. This is a good time to lighten up the foods in your diet, amp up your exercise routine and possibly engage in an Ayurvedic cleanse.

CONNECT WITH YOUR DHARMA OR PURPOSE

The Sanskrit word “dharma” translates to your soul’s purpose. It’s the reason for your existence on this earth! Connecting with that purpose brings satisfaction and energizes you for great accomplishments. Embrace Ayurvedic study with UMA  and acknowledge your draw to Ayurvedic wisdom; reflect on why you choose this path and what it means to you. Reconnect and recommit to your purpose. Allow it to shift and manifest in unexpected ways. Have confidence that it fits into your whole life. Don’t procrastinate; start and tackle tasks in manageable ways. UMA reminds you to celebrate your achievements!

A balanced inner calmness radiates from a peaceful center. It neither craves others’ approval nor rejects others’ presence. It neither pulls towards nor pushes away. It has a reverent attitude towards life and all its inhabitants.”

Donna Goddard

SET & COMMUNICATE NEW EXPECTATIONS & BOUNDARIES WITH PEOPLE IN LIFE

“See yourself as the perfect creation that you are, but at the same time, recognize with sincere honesty, the areas of your life that are out of balance and get to work to improve and grow.”

Dashama Konah Gordon

Strong relationships are important. They will be impacted by changes in your life, but don’t fear. If you’re on a positive growth path, positivity can spread to them too. Open an upfront dialogue with people in your life. UMA promotes collaboration in overcoming challenges, establishing boundaries, and fulfilling expectations together.

“Who we are is the result of how we live and act daily. Our daily actions reflect our prime values and motivations.”

David Frawley, Yoga for your Type: An Ayurvedic Approach to Your Asana Practice[6]

REJUVENATION & SELF-CARE

When life gets busy, there’s one person that is often forgotten. You! Self-care is important to ensure you perform at your best and stay energized and focused.

To understand oneself profoundly, one needs balance. That is, one cannot abandon the world, hoping to understand oneself or be so entangled in the world that there is no occasion to comprehend oneself. There must be balance, neither renunciation nor acquiescence. This demands alertness and deep awareness. We must learn to observe our actions, thoughts, ideals, and beliefs, silently and without judgment, without interpreting them, to be able to discern their true significance.”

Jiddu Krishnamurti

PRIORITIZE & MAKE SHIFTS

Take a look at your to-do list. Being busy doesn’t always equal being productive. Are you spending too much time on what feels urgent and not enough time on what is important?  Realize it’s OK to say “no” sometimes. Let the important things be your priorities and forget about the rest, for now.

SLOW YOUR ROLL

SCHEDULE YOUR SELF-CARE

UMA strongly believes in scheduling mental self-care for a few minutes each day, whether it’s for breath work, gratitude journaling, or meditation. This will enhance your mental well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, boost positivity, build confidence, and prevent burnout. Additionally, prioritize rest, exercise, and nourishing meals to take care of your body. Make sure to schedule these activities if you tend to overlook them.

MOON BATHING MEDITATION: ABSORBING THE FLOWER MOON’S HEALING ENERGIES

WHAT IS MOON BATHING?

In the serene embrace of night, there exists a practice as old as human civilization itself—moon bathing. This ancient ritual involves basking in the ethereal glow of the moon, allowing its celestial radiance to envelop both body and soul. As we immerse ourselves in the gentle luminescence of the moon, we open ourselves to its soothing energies, seeking solace and healing in its celestial embrace.

Did you know?

Cultivating a connection with the moon was important to the early cultures of India, China, Egypt, and Arabia, as well as to Celtic and pre-pagan people.

WHAT IS AYURVEDA’S PERSPECTIVE ON MOON BATHING?

In the holistic tradition of Ayurveda, moon bathing is revered for its profound therapeutic benefits. According to this ancient healing system, moon bathing serves to pacify the pitta dosha—the elemental force governing metabolism and heat within the body. By harmonizing the fiery energies of pitta, moon bathing offers respite from conditions such as hypertension, rashes, and inflammation, which often stem from an imbalance in this vital bio-energy. Traditionally, moon worship is linked to feminine energy and fertility, particularly since women’s bodies follow the same 28-day cycle as the moon.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FLOWER MOON:

Among the myriad lunar manifestations, the Flower Moon emerges as a radiant emblem of spring’s vibrant splendor. Originating in North America, this celestial spectacle occurs when the moon’s luminous countenance is fully illuminated, casting a luminous glow upon the earth below. Scheduled to grace the night sky on May 23rd, the Flower Moon symbolizes a time of renewal and blossoming, mirroring the resplendent blooms adorning the landscape during this season of regeneration.

Did you know?

What is moon gazing?

Moon gazing isn’t anything new. Trataka (steady gazing) meditation, a key yogic technique, often involves a candle flame; however, some practitioners focus their gaze on other objects, including the moon.

Pushp Lata Rajpoot, Pushpa Vaishnav. 2007

HOW TO PRACTICE MOON BATHING?

Engaging in moon bathing is a simple yet profound endeavor, requiring only a willingness to connect with the natural world and the celestial rhythms that govern it. For those inclined towards a more structured approach, our experts suggest incorporating meditation or chanting into the practice can deepen the experience, fostering a profound sense of inner peace and serenity. Furthermore, the element of lunar water holds a special affinity for lunar energies, with many practitioners choosing to imbibe or bathe in water that has been imbued with the moon’s ethereal glow, surrounded by candles, amplifying the transformative power of the ritual.

IS MOON BATHING BENEFICIAL? [Int J Yoga. 2014]

  • Relaxation and Stress Relief: The moonlight’s calming effect can help reduce stress and promote feelings of peace.
  • Improved Sleep: Studies suggest regulating your circadian rhythm with natural light exposure can improve sleep quality.
  • Emotional Balance: The Flower Moon, in particular, is associated with heightened emotional sensitivity. Moonbathing can provide a space to process emotions mindfully.
  • Nature Connection: Spending time outdoors and focusing on the moon fosters a sense of connection with the natural world.

Before You Begin:

Moonbathing meditation is a beginner-friendly practice requiring minimal preparation. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Comfortable Clothing: Dress according to the weather to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the meditation.
  • Optional extras: A blanket or yoga mat for sitting or lying down on, and an eye mask (if you find outdoor light distracting).

Finding Your Moonlit Spot:

  • Look for a clear view of the sky. An open field, park, or even your balcony can work.
  • If you can’t be outdoors, find a window with a clear view of the moon and dim the lights in the room.

Guided Moonbathing Meditation:

  • Settle In: Find a comfortable seated or lying position. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling slowly for 3 seconds and exhaling for 3 seconds.
  • Body Scan: Gently focus your attention on your body, noticing any areas of tension and consciously relaxing those muscles.
  • Moon Connection: Visualize the moonlight bathing you in its soft glow. Feel it washing over your body, cleansing away any stress or worries.
  • Emotional Awareness: As you continue to gaze (or envision) the moon, acknowledge any emotions that arise. Observe them without judgment and allow them to flow freely.
  • Inner Peace: Let the moon’s serenity fill you with a sense of inner peace.
  • Mindful Observation: Continue gazing at the moon, letting thoughts come and go without getting attached to them.exclamation
  • Deepen the Experience (Optional): For a more focused meditation, try gently relaxing your gaze as you stare at the moon. When your eyes water, close them and visualize the moon’s image in your mind’s eye.
  • Gently Coming Back: After 3-30 minutes (depending on your comfort level), gently wiggle your fingers and toes, take a deep breath, and slowly open your eyes.

WHAT IS THE MOON’S INFLUENCE ON HORMONAL HEALTH?

Within the realm of medical astrology, the moon holds sway over the intricate dance of hormones within the body, exerting a subtle yet profound influence on our physiological well-being. By fostering harmony within the pituitary gland—the master regulator of hormonal balance—the moon serves as a potent ally in the quest for holistic health and vitality. [Curve. 2014]

In conclusion, moon bathing stands as a timeless testament to the profound interconnectedness between humanity and the cosmos, offering solace and healing in an increasingly tumultuous world. As we immerse ourselves in the celestial radiance of the moon, may we be reminded of our innate connection to the rhythms of nature, finding solace and renewal beneath the gentle glow of the Flower Moon.

USING TONGUE SCRAPPER: CREATIVE WAYS TO AVOID GAGGING

Cleaning your tongue without gagging can be a challenging task for many. The accumulation of bacteria on the tongue not only contributes to bad breath but also affects overall oral health. Fortunately, there are effective techniques to overcome the gag reflex and clean your tongue properly. In this guide, we’ll explore why we gag, the importance of tongue cleaning, and practical methods to clean your tongue without discomfort.

UNDERSTANDING THE GAG REFLEX

The gag reflex, scientifically known as the pharyngeal reflex, is a protective mechanism that prevents choking when foreign objects stimulate certain areas in the mouth and throat. While the intensity of the gag reflex varies among individuals, it can be desensitized over time with consistent practice. [Shruthi Sivakumar, Aparna Prabhu. 2023]

DO WE NEED TO CLEAN OUR TONGUE?

Surprisingly, a significant portion of bad breath (halitosis) can be attributed to residues on the tongue. The back of the tongue harbors a vast array of bacteria, including those responsible for producing sulfur compounds, which contribute to foul breath. Moreover, cleaning your tongue doesn’t just freshen your breath; it can also enhance your sense of taste, making your culinary experiences more enjoyable. [Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2022]

Did You Know?

It is estimated that approximately 85% of all halitosis cases have their origin within the mouth; of these, 50% are caused by tongue residues.

J Periodontol. 2004

8 CREATIVE WAYS TO AVOID GAGGING

Desensitization:

Gently desensitizing the tongue is an effective way to overcome the gag reflex. By gradually introducing stimuli and focusing on specific areas, you can reduce sensitivity over time. Daily practice with a soft toothbrush can help extend your tolerance.

Change Your Breathing:

Breathing through the nose instead of the mouth can minimize sensitivity to the gag reflex. Additionally, practicing controlled breathing techniques can further alleviate discomfort. [Richard B. Chaffee, Jacob Zabara, and Martin F. Tansy]

Pressure Points:

Applying pressure to a specific point on the palm has been shown to reduce the gag reflex for many individuals. Making a fist with the thumb tucked inside and squeezing firmly can help dull the sensation of gagging. [J. American Dental Association, 2008]

Brush Sideways:

Instead of brushing the tongue from front to back, try brushing or scraping sideways. This alternative motion can reduce stimulation of the gag reflex, allowing for more effective cleaning.

Try Dental Floss:

If traditional tongue cleaning methods still trigger gagging, consider using dental floss as an alternative. While less effective than dedicated tongue cleaners, dental floss offers a smaller profile and may be easier to tolerate.

Humming:

Some individuals find that humming or vocalizing while cleaning their tongue can distract from the gag reflex. Give it a go with some simple AAAs or your favourite tunes. This technique may help make the cleaning process more comfortable.

Use a Tongue Scraper:

Opting for a tongue scraper instead of a toothbrush can make cleaning easier. Tongue scrapers have a lower profile, allowing for deeper cleaning without triggering the gag reflex. [Emerg Infect Dis. 2007]

Clean on an Empty Stomach:

Cleaning the tongue on an empty stomach, such as in the morning before breakfast, can minimize the gag reflex. Avoiding large meals before tongue cleaning may help improve comfort and effectiveness.

Did You Know?

Researchers have found that a tongue scraper can remove as much as 75% of compounds that cause bad breath while a toothbrush can only remove 45%.

J Periodontol. 2004

MASTERING PROPER TONGUE CLEANING TECHNIQUE:

  • Stick out your tongue as far as possible.
  • Inspect your tongue in the mirror to identify areas of debris.
  • Place the UMA Pure Palate Tongue Scraper on the affected area.
  • Gently press down and pull the cleaner towards the tip of the tongue.
  • Rinse the cleaner under running water and repeat as necessary.
  • Finish with an antibacterial mouthwash to further reduce bacteria buildup.

Mastering the art of tongue cleaning is essential for maintaining oral health and fresh breath. By understanding the gag reflex and implementing practical techniques, you can clean your tongue effectively without discomfort. Incorporate tongue cleaning into your daily oral hygiene routine to experience the benefits of improved breath and taste sensation. With patience and perseverance, you can conquer the gag reflex and achieve optimal tongue cleanliness.

PREGNANCY & HEARTBURN: COPING STRATEGIES FOR EXPECTING MOTHERS

Pregnancy is a miraculous journey filled with excitement, anticipation, and yes, discomforts. One of the most common discomforts that expecting mothers face is heartburn. Despite its misleading name, heartburn doesn’t involve your heart. It’s a burning sensation in the esophagus, caused by acidic stomach contents refluxing into it. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the causes of heartburn during pregnancy, along with effective coping strategies to alleviate the discomfort.

Did you know?

Severe heartburn can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack or angina. If you’re uncertain about the cause, seek medical attention promptly.

UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY

1

Hormonal Changes:

Pregnancy brings about significant hormonal fluctuations, including elevated levels of progesterone. Progesterone has the unfortunate side effect of relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscular valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach. When the LES relaxes excessively, it fails to prevent the backflow of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus, leading to heartburn.

2

Gastrointestinal Changes:

The digestive system undergoes various changes during pregnancy, primarily to accommodate the growing fetus. Slowed digestion, caused by hormonal influences, allows food to remain in the stomach for longer periods, increasing the likelihood of acid reflux. Additionally, as the uterus expands to accommodate the growing baby, it exerts pressure on the stomach, further promoting reflux.

3

Dietary Triggers:

Certain foods and beverages can exacerbate heartburn symptoms during pregnancy. Spicy, fatty, and acidic foods, along with caffeine and carbonated drinks, are notorious culprits. These items can weaken the LES or stimulate acid production in the stomach, aggravating heartburn.

Did you know?

Peppermint, often used to soothe upset stomachs, can relax the muscles between the stomach and esophagus, leading to heartburn.

Mountsinai.org

4

Lifestyle Factors:

Smoking during pregnancy not only poses risks to fetal health but also contributes to heartburn. Smoking weakens the LES and promotes acid reflux, intensifying discomfort. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption can exacerbate heartburn symptoms and should be avoided during pregnancy.

Did you know?

Secondhand smoke exposure is linked to heartburn, so being around smokers regularly may increase your risk of experiencing it.

5

Physical Changes:

As the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus displaces abdominal organs, including the stomach. This displacement can further compromise the function of the LES, allowing acid to reflux more easily into the esophagus. Heartburn tends to become more pronounced in the later stages of pregnancy due to increased uterine size and pressure on the stomach.

Did you know?

Tight clothing, like belts or waistbands, can exacerbate heartburn by increasing pressure on the stomach and forcing acid into the esophagus. Loosening your belt may alleviate symptoms.

Healthwise Staff 2023

PREVALENCE OF HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY

Statistics reveal that anywhere from 17% to 75% of pregnant individuals experience heartburn, making it a prevalent discomfort during gestation. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or not, the likelihood of experiencing heartburn increases, particularly in the second and third trimesters.

 BMJ Clin Evid. 2015

MANAGING HEARTBURN DURING PREGNANCY [Can Fam Physician. 2010]

Thankfully, there are several coping strategies to ease the discomfort of heartburn during pregnancy:

  • Dietary Modifications: Avoid trigger foods such as citrus, spicy, fatty, and caffeinated foods, along with carbonated drinks. Opt for smaller, more frequent meals and avoid eating or drinking three hours before bedtime.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Take your time while eating, sit up straight, and resist lying down immediately after meals. Elevating your head while sleeping can also mitigate symptoms.
  • Natural Remedies: Yogurt, milk, or honey mixed with warm milk can offer relief. Chewing gum can help neutralize acid in the esophagus.
  • Over-the-counter Medications: Nonprescription antacids like Tums® or Maalox® can provide temporary relief, but it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy.
  • Oil Massage: There’s evidence indicating that specific oils can alleviate heartburn. Ginger, traditionally used for stomach issues, including products with ginger essential oil, might help ease heartburn symptoms.

LONG-TERM STRATEGIES FOR HEARTBURN MANAGEMENT

Beyond immediate relief, adopting certain lifestyle changes can prevent recurrent episodes of heartburn:

  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight puts pressure on the stomach, increasing the risk of acid reflux. A balanced diet and regular exercise are crucial for managing weight during pregnancy.
  • Elevate Bed Position: Sleeping with the head and chest elevated can prevent acid reflux during sleep. Using foam wedges or adjusting the bed’s height can aid in maintaining an elevated position.
  • Quit Smoking: Smoking exacerbates heartburn symptoms by weakening the lower esophageal sphincter. Quitting smoking can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of heartburn.

SEEKING MEDICAL ADVICE

If heartburn persists or becomes severe, it’s imperative to consult with a healthcare provider. They can offer personalized recommendations and prescribe safe medications to alleviate symptoms while ensuring the well-being of both the mother and the fetus.

Heartburn during pregnancy may be a common discomfort, but it doesn’t have to overshadow the joy of expecting a child. By understanding the underlying causes, implementing dietary modifications, and lifestyle adjustments, and seeking medical guidance when necessary, expecting mothers can effectively manage heartburn and focus on the miraculous journey of pregnancy. Remember, a healthy and happy pregnancy is within reach with the right strategies and support.

THE POWER OF NUTRITION: WORLD HEALTH DAY SPECIAL

April 7th of each year marks the celebration of World Health Day, a global health awareness day established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to shed light on crucial health issues. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing health on both individual and global levels. In 2024, the theme for World Health Day is “My health, my right,” emphasizing universal access to quality health services, education, and information. As we delve into the significance of this day, it’s imperative to recognize the pivotal role of nutrition in achieving optimal health.

WORLD HEALTH DAY: A GLOBAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Since its inception in 1948, World Health Day has been instrumental in addressing various health concerns worldwide. Through activities and initiatives, it aims to raise awareness and mobilize efforts towards improving global health outcomes. Over the years, themes have covered a wide array of issues, including mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change.

In 2024, the focus is on advocating for universal access to essential health services, emphasizing the fundamental right of every individual to quality healthcare. Despite significant progress, millions still lack access to basic health services, and challenges such as diseases, disasters, conflicts, and environmental degradation continue to threaten health outcomes globally. Addressing these issues requires collective action and prioritization of health as a fundamental human right.

NUTRITION: A CORNERSTONE OF HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

At its core, nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining overall health and well-being. It encompasses consuming a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients necessary for various bodily functions. From carbohydrates and proteins to vitamins and minerals, each nutrient contributes to vital physiological processes, including brain function, immune response, and tissue repair.

The importance of nutrition extends beyond physical health to encompass development, immunity, and longevity. Adequate nutrition is associated with improved maternal and child health, stronger immune systems, and reduced risk of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. Moreover, nutrition plays a pivotal role in cognitive development, ensuring that individuals can thrive and reach their full potential.

UNDERSTANDING AYURVEDIC NUTRITION

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, places significant emphasis on nutrition as a cornerstone of health and wellness. Rooted in the concept of balance, Ayurvedic nutrition aims to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit through dietary choices tailored to individual constitution (dosha) and digestive capacity (Agni).

Central to Ayurvedic nutrition is the concept of “Ahara” (diet) and “Anna” (food), which are viewed as essential elements for maintaining health and vitality. Unlike Western dietary guidelines that focus on standardized portion sizes and caloric intake, Ayurveda emphasizes personalized dietary recommendations based on one’s unique constitution and digestive power.

THE ROLE OF TASTE AND DIGESTION

Ayurvedic nutrition categorizes food based on taste (rasa) and its impact on digestion and overall well-being. The six tastes—sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent—play distinct roles in stimulating digestive enzymes and promoting balance within the body. By incorporating a variety of tastes into meals, Ayurvedic practitioners aim to support optimal digestion and nutrient absorption.

Moreover, Ayurveda recognizes the influence of herbs and spices in enhancing the therapeutic properties of food. From ginger and turmeric to cinnamon and cumin, these culinary additives not only impart flavor but also possess medicinal qualities that aid digestion, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being.

EMBRACING MIND-BODY NUTRITION

Beyond physical nourishment, Ayurvedic nutrition acknowledges the profound connection between food and mental health. According to Ayurveda, the quality of food directly influences the mind and emotions, shaping one’s mental state and overall outlook on life. Foods are categorized as sattvic (light and harmonizing), rajasic (stimulating), or tamasic (dulling and sluggish), each exerting a distinct influence on mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness.

Self-care encompasses four key dimensions of well-being: mind (mental/psychological), body (physical), heart (emotional), and spirit (spiritual/essence). Prioritizing self-care in these areas promotes holistic health and vitality.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to springtime self-care tailored specifically for women:

1

EMBRACE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

After the hibernation of winter, embrace the warmer weather by engaging in outdoor activities. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Yoga or tai chi in nature

These activities not only promote physical fitness but also provide opportunities for relaxation and mindfulness, essential for women’s mental well-being.

2

NOURISH YOUR BODY WITH FRESH FOODS

Spring brings an abundance of fresh produce to farmers’ markets. Incorporating these seasonal delights into your diet can boost your health. Consider adding the following to your meals:

  • Leafy greens
  • Berries
  • Asparagus
  • Artichokes
  • Leeks
  • Rhubarb
  • Fava beans
  • Watercress
  • Radishes

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables supports overall health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, ensuring a vibrant and energetic spring season.

3

STAY HYDRATED

As temperatures rise, women need to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and infuse it with fresh fruits like lemon, lime, or strawberries for added flavor and antioxidants. Pay close attention to your hydration levels, especially during physical activity, to avoid dehydration.

4

PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Enjoying the sun’s warmth is delightful, but remember to protect your skin from its harmful rays. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, and seek shade during peak hours to prevent sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

5

SPRING CLEANSING FOR MENTAL CLARITY

Decluttering and organizing your living space can work wonders for women’s mental health. Spring cleaning not only creates a clean and serene environment but also reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Take advantage of this opportunity to rid your home of potential health hazards and breathe new life into your surroundings.

DID YOU KNOW? Women are three times more likely than men to experience common mental health problems. [1]

6

CULTIVATE MINDFULNESS

As nature blooms around you, take time to cultivate mindfulness and meditation. Practice deep breathing exercises to reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance your overall well-being. Embrace the spirit of renewal and growth by staying present in the moment.

7

PRIORITIZE SLEEP

Quality sleep is vital for physical and mental health. Aim for seven to eight hours of restful sleep each night to rejuvenate your body and mind. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine and limit electronic device usage before bed to ensure a restful night’s sleep.

8

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Springtime allergies and colds are common, but you can support your immune system by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, stay hydrated, and practice good hygiene habits. Consider supplementing with vitamins and probiotics to give your immune system an extra boost.

9

TAKE A DIGITAL DETOX

In a world dominated by technology, taking a break from screens can do wonders for women’s mental health. Set aside time for a digital detox to disconnect from devices and reconnect with yourself and the world around you. Use this time to engage in activities that nourish your soul, such as reading, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies.

10

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Spring is a season of growth and renewal, making it the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Whether it’s learning a new skill, exploring a hobby, or embarking on an adventure, embracing new experiences can invigorate your spirit and expand your horizons.

11

CONNECT WITH NATURE

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors by spending time in nature. Take leisurely walks in the park, hike through scenic trails, or relax on the beach. Connecting with nature can reduce stress, boost mood, and foster a sense of peace and well-being.

Why do we need to promote self-care?

Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy, and more. [2]

12

PRACTICE SELF-CARE

Prioritize self-care as an essential component of your springtime wellness routine. Whether it’s indulging in a luxurious bath, treating yourself to a massage, or simply taking time for yourself to unwind and recharge, self-care is non-negotiable for optimal health and happiness.

13

MANAGE STRESS

Stress management is key to maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Incorporate stress-relieving techniques such as mindfulness, exercise, adequate sleep, and regular breaks into your daily routine. Avoid negative triggers and cultivate a positive mindset to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and grace.

DID YOU KNOW? Studies have consistently shown that suicide rates increase during the spring and into the summer months.  [3]

14

CHECK IN WITH YOUR HEALTH

Use the renewal of spring as a reminder to prioritize your health. Schedule any necessary appointments or screenings, such as dental check-ups, annual physicals, or mammograms, to ensure you’re taking proactive steps toward optimal health and well-being.

15

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY

Surround yourself with positive energy by nurturing relationships with supportive friends and family members. Minimize exposure to negativity and toxic influences that drain your energy and diminish your well-being. Cultivate a positive and uplifting environment that fosters growth, happiness, and fulfillment.

In conclusion, springtime presents a golden opportunity for women to prioritize their mental health and well-being. By embracing self-care practices, and nurturing their bodies, minds, and spirits, women can flourish and thrive amidst the beauty and renewal of the season. Let this spring be a season of growth, rejuvenation, and empowerment as you embark on your journey toward optimal health and happiness.

SPRING CLEANING FOR YOUR RELATIONSHIPS: DECLUTTERING THE INTIMACY

As the vibrant hues of spring begin to blossom around us, it’s not just our homes that could use a bit of refreshing. Relationships, much like our living spaces, can accumulate clutter over time, hindering the intimacy and connection we crave. Just as we tidy up our physical spaces during spring cleaning, it’s essential to declutter our relationships too. Let’s explore some practical tips for revitalizing and decluttering the emotional and physical aspects of your relationship.

Buddhism teaches that joy and happiness arise from letting go. Please sit down and take an inventory of your life. There are things you’ve been hanging on to that are not useful and deprive you of your freedom. Find the courage to let them go.”

Thích Nhất Hạnh, Peace Is Every Breath: A Practice for Our Busy Lives

1

Assessing Emotional Clutter:

Before diving into the decluttering process, it’s crucial to take stock of the emotional clutter that may have accumulated in your relationship. This can include unresolved conflicts, unspoken resentments, or neglected emotional needs.

  • Schedule a Check-In: Set aside dedicated time to sit down with your partner and discuss how you’re both feeling about the relationship. This open dialogue can help bring any underlying issues to the surface.
  • Practice Active Listening: When your partner is sharing their feelings, make a conscious effort to listen without interrupting or formulating a response. Validate their emotions and show empathy.
  • Identify Patterns: Reflect on recurring arguments or sources of tension in your relationship. Recognizing these patterns can help you address underlying issues more effectively.

2

Clearing Communication Channels:

Effective communication is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. However, communication channels can become clogged with misinterpretations, assumptions, and distractions.

  • Schedule Tech-Free Time: In today’s digital age, constant connectivity can impede meaningful communication. Set aside dedicated time each day to disconnect from screens and focus solely on each other.
  • Practice Mindful Communication: Before reacting impulsively during a disagreement, take a moment to pause and consider your words carefully. Mindful communication involves expressing yourself honestly and respectfully.
  • Use “I” Statements: When discussing sensitive topics or expressing grievances, frame your thoughts using “I” statements to avoid placing blame on your partner. For example, say “I feel” instead of “You always.”

Knowledge is learning something every day. Wisdom is letting go of something every day.”

Zen Proverbs.

3

Rekindling Romance:

Over time, the spark of romance in a relationship can dim amidst the chaos of everyday life. Spring cleaning provides an opportunity to reignite the flames of passion and intimacy.

  • Plan Date Nights: Schedule regular date nights to prioritize quality time together away from the stresses of work and household responsibilities. Try out new activities or revisit old favorites to keep things exciting.
  • Express Gratitude: Take a moment each day to express appreciation for your partner’s efforts, whether it’s a small gesture or a grand gesture. Gratitude fosters a sense of connection and reinforces mutual appreciation.
  • Surprise Gestures: Inject spontaneity into your relationship by surprising your partner with thoughtful gestures or acts of kindness. It could be as simple as leaving a love note or planning a surprise weekend getaway.

4

Organizing Physical Space:

The physical environment we inhabit can significantly impact our emotional well-being and the dynamics of our relationships. Just as we declutter our homes during spring cleaning, tidying up our shared space can promote harmony and tranquility.

  • Declutter Shared Spaces: Collaborate with your partner to declutter and organize shared living spaces, such as the bedroom or living room. Clearing out excess clutter can create a sense of spaciousness and calm.
  • Create a Relaxation Nook: Designate a cozy corner of your home as a relaxation nook where you can unwind together. Whether it’s a reading corner with plush cushions or a candlelit sanctuary, having a designated space for relaxation fosters intimacy.
  • Personalize Your Space: Infuse your shared space with personal touches that reflect both your personalities and your collective experiences as a couple. Display photographs, artwork, or mementos that hold sentimental value.

Start by discarding. Then organize your space thoroughly, completely, in one go.”

Mari Kondo.

5

Decluttering Relationships and Self-Reflection:

When we declutter our relationships, we look carefully at our hearts. We step back to gain perspective. We address any relationship problems, remove non-positive or toxic relationships, and do our part to maintain healthy relationships. “Decluttering relationships” is a process of building your identity through adjustment, setting boundaries to make yourself clear, and slowly withdrawing your dependency on the people or things that don’t serve you anymore. Oversee the judgmental comments and mindfully focus on your overall well-being.

6

Listening to Your Body:

Remember, the brain takes up 50% of what we eat! Listen to your body: Eat right, eat enough, and eat regularly! Nourishing yourself properly can positively impact your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being, which in turn can strengthen your relationship with your partner.

Just as the arrival of spring signals a time of renewal and growth in the natural world, it can also catalyze revitalizing and decluttering your relationship. By assessing emotional clutter, clearing communication channels, rekindling romance, organizing physical space, decluttering relationships, and prioritizing self-care, you can breathe new life into your connection with your partner. Remember, spring cleaning for your relationship is an ongoing process that requires effort and commitment from both parties. Embrace this opportunity for growth and transformation, and watch as your relationship blooms and flourishes in the season of renewal.

6 NATURAL TIPS FOR SPRINGTIME FERTILITY: ENHANCING HEALTH

Springtime brings with it a sense of renewal and rejuvenation, not only in nature but also within our bodies. As the days lengthen and the earth awakens, it’s an opportune moment to focus on enhancing women’s reproductive health. Combining modern knowledge with ancient wisdom from Ayurveda, here are six tips tailored to harness the fertility-boosting potential of spring:

1

EMBRACE NUTRIENT-RICH SPRING PRODUCE

In Ayurveda, seasonal eating is emphasized as a means to maintain balance and vitality. Spring offers an array of fresh fruits and vegetables that can nourish and support reproductive health. Incorporate leafy greens like spinach and kale, known for their detoxifying properties, into your meals. Enjoy the sweetness of seasonal fruits like strawberries and apricots, which are rich in antioxidants and vitamins essential for fertility.

2

PRIORITIZE WHOLE FOODS AND HEALTHY FATS

Ayurveda emphasizes whole foods and healthy fats for overall well-being. Opt for easily digestible options like basmati rice, quinoa, avocados, ghee, and coconut oil, along with omega-3 fatty acids from salmon or flaxseeds for hormone production and reproductive function. Spring invites experimentation with fertility-enhancing recipes such as Spinach and Red Pepper Omelet for protein and folate, Cucumber-Carrot Salad for vitamins and minerals, or Avocado and Prawn Salad for healthy fats and protein, all supporting fertility.

Integrate zinc-rich foods like oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, and beans, or consider supplements to support hormone regulation and egg development. Enjoy fertility-boosting superfoods such as pomegranate juice, dark chocolate, tomatoes, walnuts, lentils, and parmesan cheese popcorn, all contributing to reproductive health.

3

FOLLOW AYURVEDIC DAILY AND SEASONAL ROUTINES

Ayurveda prescribes specific daily and seasonal routines, known as Dinacharya and Ritucharya, respectively, to align with the natural rhythms of the body and environment. Incorporating practices such as oil massage (Abhyanga), nasal cleansing (Nasya), and tongue scraping (Jihwa Prakshalana) can help support reproductive health by promoting detoxification and balancing the doshas.

4

INCORPORATE AYURVEDIC HERBS AND RASAYANA

Just as in winter, when Ayurveda recommends consuming Rasayana herbs to enhance vitality, spring offers an opportunity to support reproductive health with specific herbs. Herbs like Shatavari, Ashwagandha, and Gokshura are traditionally used to nourish the reproductive system and promote hormonal balance. Consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to determine the most suitable herbs for your individual needs.

5

CULTIVATE MINDFULNESS AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress can have a profound impact on reproductive health, disrupting hormonal balance and menstrual cycles. Incorporate stress-reducing practices such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. Take time to connect with nature, whether it’s through leisurely walks in the springtime sunshine or mindful moments spent in a garden.

6

SEEK HOLISTIC SUPPORT

Ayurveda views the individual as a whole, considering the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. Seek holistic support from qualified Ayurvedic practitioners who can offer personalized guidance and treatments tailored to your unique constitution and health goals. By addressing imbalances on all levels, you can optimize your chances of achieving and maintaining reproductive health.

In conclusion, spring offers a fertile ground for nurturing women’s reproductive health naturally, guided by the principles of Ayurveda. By embracing nutrient-rich foods, following Ayurvedic daily and seasonal routines, incorporating herbal support, cultivating mindfulness, and seeking holistic guidance, women can empower themselves on their journey toward conception. As nature blossoms around us, may this season herald new beginnings and abundant blessings on your path to parenthood.
